Hello! Just watched the video you did on how hormone season is going! I'm curious how the backpack from bird tricks is working out? I will be getting a Maximilian pionus possibly next month and they are just a little bugger than blue heads. Im wondering if the backpack is holding up well still?

Hi, Stella. I am doing a lot of research on if a pionus bird is a right match for me. I would love to ask you some questions please. 1. Does Charlie go through hormonal periods every single year? How long does it last and does she ever bite you? 2. Do you think a female or a male pionus is better? Thank you so much for making these videos. It helps people like me to make the right decision on a huge commitment like this. Any information would be absolutely appreciated! Aloha.
@stellaandcharlie16 күн бұрын
Hiiiii! Sorry for the late answer, but I'll be glad to give my input :D Birds will generally have two to three hormonal periods a year mostly spanning through the spring and summer time and this is every single year from they are around 2-4 years old (depending on the individual). Hormonal behavior will almost always include some more aggressive or teritorial behavior, because the birds are wiered to build and protect a nest area. Pionus are thankfully more easy to read in regards to body language, so knowing when it's hormone season and really paying attention to their body language is the key to know when they are on edge or nesty and avoid a bite (By just leaving them alone). I have been bit by Charlie with no warnings however, so it is defffinatly possible and can hurt a lot. In regards to gender, I actually was looking to get a male to not worry about my bird being egg-bound (trying to lay an egg and not being able too). Now this is really just generally what I hear, but take it with a grain of salt as all birds are indivuals and their personality, training and bond has a lot to say, BUT, males do tend to be more vocal than females, aswell as displaying more aggressive behavior during hormone season in contrast to females that will usually be more nesty and territoral (and agrressive for that reason). Other than that I really don't think there is much of a difference, so I would go more for personality of the individual. Charlie was super outgoing and curious as a baby, which is why I chose her, and she has really been a joy, with egg laying and nesting never being a problem :) I hope that helped, and I'm so glad to read that you are doing reseach, let me know if you have any other questions :D

@@MovingFelix-bs2bm hmm I don't know of anyone sadly, only that the breeder I got Charlie from sold his pairs to someone in Sweden. It's an old website, but here is where I found mine: Pionus.dk As mentioned he doesn't breed anymore, but you could try and contact the Swedish one in there :) GL!

Thanks for your sharing, so helpful! I bought this backpack three weeks ago. It’s safe and hard to be destroyed by parrots. I think it’s another problem is its ventilation (I from Taiwan, a subtropical country) is not so good (cuz the double stainless mesh). Besides, it’s difficult to clean up the bottom, when I want to take the bottom out, the residual grains stuck in the corner😢 I’m frustrated when I attached these mesh pieces and disturbed by the zipper too 😢. But my parrot love it, I like this backpack too hhh😂
@stellaandcharlieАй бұрын
It is truly a love/hate realtionship, I totally get what you mean :) I guess I never thought about the ventilation since it’s never been an issue herr where it’s colder, but thanks for mentioning it so others are aware :D Overall tho, it’s better quality than the other backpacks I’ve seen and heard of.

Hi Stella do you know anywhere to buy the same kind of bowl to put water in as well? I want to get this backpack, but don’t want to have to switch between giving my parrot food and water. TIA!
@stellaandcharlieАй бұрын
Hmm I'm not sure, I would ask Birdtricks at [email protected], but I do know you can order som via Amazon (though maybe not the exact same). The only problem is that there is only space to apply one bowl in terms of holes in backpack to attach it, but it's not at all impossible to make another one with some DIY :D

I am a junior in high-school and will be going to college to hopefully one day become a vet as well. I qualify to bring an ESA to school with me and my Mom agreed to a bird. I was wondering if it would reasonable to bring an eclectus to school with me. I am very introverted so I will definitely be home with him after class. I really like the eclectus temperament as they can talk, are playful and will get along with children (which I want to have in the much later future). Is that a reasonable commitment to take on during college?
@stellaandcharlie2 ай бұрын
I must admit I don't know a lot about eclectus parrots, but taking on any parrot during college is tough and a big commitment. I love and adore Charlie, but parrots are less than optimal when trying to study for an exam and they start to scream for attention... Really do consider everything and maybe find someone with eclectus knowledge that could maybe give better advice, cause I'm afraid I don't qualify :) But hey, best of luck with your studies! I really hope it's everything you wish for, and how cool that you got in, I know it can be quite tough many places, so very well done :D

What about Planet Pleasure , Northern parrot?
@stellaandcharlie2 ай бұрын
Awesome brands in terms of material and such, but at least for planet pleasure Charlie hasn't been interested in the toys I bought once, as in not at all unfortunately :( Northern parrots seem ok, but material wise they don't hit Charlies preferences that much, and I'm not a total fan since they still have some unsafe elements in some of the toys. But compared to most brands, they are absolutely fine :)

It does sound weird that he/she is still doesn't have the "white crown" at two years old. I love your videos! I will be adopting a blue headed pionus this summer and had a question, how do we prevent our birds from getting bird lice or other paracite from the outdoors when taking your bird outside? Is there a product like cats and dogs that we can put them? There is a lot of ticks where I am from and wouldnt like to take a chance of my bird getting that. But I would really love to take her outside in a harness when I go hiking. Thanks!
@stellaandcharlie2 ай бұрын
Thank yooou! And what an interesting question. I haven't really heard of ticks being a problem for parrot owners, and I think as long as they don't play in tall grass when you are out you will be fine... As far as I can tell most of the ticks they get they do remove during preening, but can risk getting some on their head they can't remove themselves, but ticks aren't dangerous for them if it's only a few. I would never use cat or dog products on them, it sounds super toxic, but always ask a vet if in doubt :) Hope that helped, best of luck with your BH <3

You can also look for local RC airplane clubs. They will know of sources for balsa wood or basswood, which is another lightweight wood that's a little harder than balsa. Then you can make your own toys or repair the ones Charlie destroys.
