Yup. They only had to wait a couple of months for the X-Trans IV too, which makes it even more unfortunate. I think the X-T4 was meant to be the X-H2, but was switched back to X-T kind of body after the X-H1's flop. I think it would have made more sense as an X-H camera than X-T, with its flippy screen and all of that.

@@uncertainrelease True. I feel the X-T4 was just a stop gap arrangement and a test bed to get the ibis unit into an X-T body. @@JoaquimGonsalves The X-H2S is nice. I would have probably looked into the X-H2 if I didn't leave Fuji for my main system (as I use a PSAM camera now anyway). Grip is decent, button placement is good and size is kept in check. I would hve preferred a retro disl setup like the X-H1 had, but hey this is good enough. I tested it in a store, it seemed like an excellent camera, but I couldn't help myself noticing the way to change the ISO was a bit cumbersome.

@@uncertainrelease that's great to hear! Enjoy the Nikon. They make really great bodies ergonomically. Yeah the XH2 is quite a far way ahead from the XH1. True about the ISO. Personally would have loved a third dial a la Canon, on the body but for now its good enough. I don't like their new joystick though. I like the materials used on it, better than the older bodies, but the electronics coupled to it are over sensitive. And of course Fuji's AF issues. Other than that, I love the XH2S. The image quality is excellent for my use cases in both photo and video.

only 150 bucks difference? That's a no brainer, get the X-T2. The T2 is an amazing video camera for the price, you get super sharp 4K video, Log profiles if you want to grade your footage, as well as HD 120p that doesn't look like it was shot on a 2008 compact. The X-T1 is nearly useless for video work, it's okay for occasional video snippets, but I'd avoid it for anything else, even if all you want to to is 1080p video. Dynamic range is atrocious, you don't have any control over the autofocus, or pictur eprofile being used, it's all you want to avoid in a video camera. Even when I wasn't doing video at all, I didn't bother with the X-T1, while I still use the X-T2 regularly for video work.

The point was to say that for the money, unless what you wanted was a small camera (which the D60 really isn't, it's still a DSLR at the end of the day), you weren't saving any money by going for the lower end model, as D200s and D80s are just as cheap as the D60 / D40X on the used market. Salut !

Interesting review Matthieu. You made lots of great points about the SD Quattro H. I just wish you had a few Art lenses to use on it, so you could have really experienced its best. It's also good that you didn't though, because that sort of forced you to try to adapt lenses not made by Sigma do it, and that helped you find out things you might not have experienced otherwise. If you ever get another Sigma camera that you need lenses for, I suggest getting at least the 50mm f1.4 Art and the 105mm f2.8 EX OS macro. Those are both really great lenses. I love my 40mm f1.4 Art and my 24mm f1.4 Art too, and plan to get the 28mm f1.4 Art. These Art lenses are just spectacular! (The SD Quattro H really likes them!) I considered it actually (the D7000 and D600 as well), but switvching to Nikon at that time would have meant changing all of my lenses, which I didn't want to do, and would have been expensive. Getting an X-T2 was not only allowing me to keep my lenses and have the X-T1 as a backup, but it also allowed me to keep going in a system I knew well. Not mentionning the fact that getting that X-T2 was cheaper than getting a D750, even without counting the lenses.

I have the xh1 and have had it and used it for years. I have a much better experience with my canon 70d, nikon d700, lumix g7. I personally dont like it lol. The raws are not very nice to process, the low light seems pretty bad, metering isnt as good as my other cameras, focus peaking isnt very accurate either as with some vintage lenses it will say things are in focus when they are not. The ibis can ruin your photos. Its good for video but just feels a bit like a battle ehen it comes to photography. I seem to get a lot less keepers from the fuji xh1 compared to all of my other cameras whether using modern or vintage lenses. I also find that it flattens colours quite a lot so you lose detail within thr colours. If you shoot a field of grass for example it seems to average out the colour rather than seeing all the individual tones and contrast
@uncertainrelease
@uncertainrelease 20 күн бұрын
In what software are you processing your files? X-Trans RAWs generally don't like Lightroom and will require software like Capture One to extract the full potential. The low light of the X-H1 is leagues ahead of the D700 (I know, I have both), and the old 18MP sensor in the 70D really isn't on the same level either. Pretty sure the 16MP chip in the G7 is also weaker on pretty much every front. I've used Fujifilm cameras for 3+ years and I've never had problems in low light, do you have some noise reduction applied (the NR setting in the quick menu). Always have that at -4 otherwise the camera will start softening thing pretty heavily at higher ISOs and you loose detail. Your comment about eh field of gradd is typically the kind of thing that would happen in a software that isn't really adapting X-Trans properly. For years Fujifilm cameras had problems in lightroom with everything green (grass, foliage,...) Focus peakinf is very accurate on the X-H1, be sure to set it to low instead of high and using the videfinder instead of the back screen (the back screen doesn't have that great of a resolution and it can get confused with peaking) I cannot comment on metering, I've never used it on any of my Fujifilm cameras. Having the live exposure view in the EVF makes it easy to simply use full manual mode. Also the files are flexible enough with more than enough dynamic range to allow for a lot of processing in post.
@souldigital8148
@souldigital8148 20 күн бұрын
@@uncertainrelease I've used capture one, affinity photo, darktable and rawtherapee. Noise reduction might be part of it as it's set to zero by default. My focus peaking is set to high so I will try low. I use the viewfinder most of the time. I'm mostly a street shooter and shot a lot in manual but when there's very contrasty conditions and frequently changing light I use the metering and auto iso to enable me to act quickly to potential shots especially when moving between bright areas and cover and it doesn't seem to be as accurate as my other cameras. In every case I get better shots from my other cameras. I've often wondered if I have issues with the sensor TBF but haven't had the chance to try another copy. There's been cases where the light is fine, iso is 800 or below but have had the muddiest images. Random question actually but if you look at your sensor can you see a smaller rectangle within the main sensor? I've looked at images online and haven't seen that on others and wonder if there's an issue with the sensor surface
@uncertainrelease

@@souldigital8148 the square in the middle of the sensor is where the phase detection points are, I have that as well on both my X-H1 and X-T2. if NR is set to 0, then there is some applied. 19:25 Nope, I strongly disagree! It's the other way around, 6400 is 12800 in reality. Standard output sensitivity (SOS) is an objective measure, while REI is just a recommendation, hence the name. REI allows manufacturers to set their own EI values based on THEIR OWN OPINION of what EI values produce correctly exposed images. There are upsides and downsides to both, REI is more suited for matrix measuring, whilst SOS is suited for average and spot metering. SOS also measures for JPEGs and can't be used to measure RAW output, but surprise, surprise, every camera measures for JPEGs even when shooting in RAW only and every camera shows JPEG preview and histogram.
@uncertainrelease
@uncertainrelease 21 күн бұрын
I compared that to my Nikon cameras. ISO 12800 on my X-H1 was pretty much the same exposure (using the same exposure parameters as well, so same aperture, same lens, same shutter speed) as ISO 6400 on my Z6. I didn't compare with other brand like Canon or Sony (since I don't have cameras of those brands), but this stayed true for all my Nikon cameras, whatever the ISO range or the range : the Fuji at the same ISO was always about 1 stop darker (cameras tested : Nikon Z6, Nikon D700, Nikon D300, Nikon D60, Nikon D2X. I didn't bother testing it with my D2H and D1X). Unless you want to argue that ISO 6400 on my Nikons is ISO 25600 in reality? I don't think that's accurate at all.
@MikeRinz
@MikeRinz 20 күн бұрын
@@uncertainrelease That's correct, ISO 12800 on Fuji (SOS) will be somewhere around 6400 on Nikon (REI). What you're saying is Fuji "lying" about their ISO, while in reality Fuji, like Pentax/Ricoh and Olympus are using more objective measuring system - SOS. So Nikon 6400 (REI) will be closer to 12800 (SOS), ISO 64 will be closer to 125. Though with REI we can't really tell what the real ISO is, since that measuring system allows manufacturers to show whatever they want. So your "Fuji lying about their ISO" would better suit manufacturers, which are using REI like Nikon.
@uncertainrelease
@uncertainrelease 20 күн бұрын
@@MikeRinz I get you, but the thing is, there are more manufacturers doing the REI thing than manufacturers doing the SOS thing. Worse, those that are using REI are all the largest companies and the most represented. The definition of REI is variable, but they all land in the same ballpark when it comes to exposure. So even though SOS is a more "accurate" way to do ISO sensitivitites, the fact of the matter is that most people are used to the REI "standard" rather than SOS. When you say that you took your shot at ISO 12800, but what you're getting on SOS cameras is about 1 stop darker than REI cameras, then you feel a little bit cheated. You feel like on the spec sheet you read something that wasn't what you expected (again, because the huge majority of users are using REI and not SOS). Nobody is lying there, I was talking about my feeling as a user. It's important to separate both. When you see "top native ISO : 12800" on the spec sheet but you get the same results as if it was ISO 6400, I think there are grounds to be a little bit dissapointed, don't you think? As for the companies themselves, they are not lying or anything like that, but there is a lack of transparency about this, mostly because everything is buried in tech babble that pretty much nobody pays attention to.

Yes, the autofocus is still completely functional. The autofocus is using a different mirror that reflects light down into the AF sensot, changing the focus screen at the top of the mirror box has no impact on it. Similarly, the posts you move to calibrate the focusing are different depending on the mirror you want to adjust, so you can adjust your main mirror (that will calibrate your manual focus accuracy) or the secondary mirror (that will calibrate the autofocus accuracy) without having any impact on the other.

@@uncertainrelease yes i know they're not CCD. If i could pick one i would probably get a Finepix s5 pro but they're kinda pricey and the d200 is pretty rare. I think the d200 is close to the d300 price wise and the d300 is a superior but a cmos as well... These are Ken Rockwell's words: "The D300 has better color, better highlights, better shadows, better AF, a far better finder, a better LCD, much sharper images due to automatic color fringe correction and triple the battery life than the D200. Game over in one sentence!" I guess that i just grab a 30 dollar d50 if i'm going for a CCD camera!

@@elinhiller5010 The D200 isn't that rare... you can pick one up for 80 bucks on MPB. Sure, it's not as good as the D300, but it's the best CCD sensor that found its way into a Nikon camera, and it's the best CCD Nikon ever made... Seems like a no brainer to me if what I wanted was a well built Nikon CCD cam... none of the other CCD Nikons are really well built, they're all plastic, even the D100 or D70. If you were looking for a D300, you would get a D300.

@@uncertainrelease problem is that i'm not blown away by the CCD sensor and what it performs. I'm on a FB group and people posting and people are almost in awe sometimes but i can't really understand and when trying to zoom in i get more confused since they're "braging" about their 6mp cameras and there's no reason to zoom because the lack of mp. The d200 is probably awesome and gives you nice photos but i would just thinking that for a little more i could get something with far "better" performance like a d700 with so much better low light performance. The 5d and 6d mark 1 at least gives us 2-3 times the mp and to me more film like photos. I don't know what to pick and maybe the CCD "hype" isn't for me! Thanks for responding! Where in Europe are you based btw? Greetings from Sweden!

@@elinhiller5010 "for a little more oyu could get a D700"... uh a decent condition D700 will be around 300 bucks when a decent condition D200 will be under 100... that's not "just a little more". You don't get a CCD camera for the performance, you get it for the color science baked in thjose older cameras. At least that's my understanding of it. The 5D mark 1 is "only" 12MP which is not fer from the 10MP of the D200. Images have nostalgic tones to them, but unless you're really into those nostalgic warm tones, the 5Dc is inferior to the D700 to me, which though it has character in teh way it renders colors, is also able to be edited the way you want, without forcing your hand in a nostalgic vibe. If you're not after the D200's sensor or the whole CCD thing, there is no point in geting one. I'm in France btw

@@uncertainrelease i get you! I tend to listen to the “back to basics” guys and the end results doesn’t get better with the progress in technology, the way to the finish results is easier but the end results some claims was better on those older cameras because of their way to process colors. The 5d classic, 5d mark II, d6, d700 are some of those oldies that performs just as good as the top end mirrorless and even better according to some “pro/full time” photographers I watch. Im a happy amateur struggle with GAS but and I would love this to be true because there’s so much gold for us to pick for a cheap price 😁👍🏻

@@brunodrakenas9575 The D6 ain't that old, it was released in 2020 haha But yeah, I do agree that those older cameras have something "special". Some people have already theorized on why that is, and my understanding is that in the mid/late 2000s, camera companies were really trying to push digital as a replacement to film, and so the colors of digital cameras like the 5D classic, the D700 ect had to match those of film when it comes to tones ect. The following generation of cameras (5Dmk III, D800,...) really didn't have much competition from film anymore, so brands could do pretty much what they wanted, going towards flatter images that allowed more adjustments in post, but at the cost of character of the imnages themselves. TO me the last "great" senson when it comes to colors was the one that was put in the D4/Df. It's really wonderful, I hope to be able to pick one up someday, but both camera models are still pretty expensive even today. I have en XQD card laying around that I don't use anymore (since I've swsitched to CFXB cards on my Z6), so maybe I'll grab a D4 in a couple of years just to test things out with that sensor ;)

I have a D700, so I see very little point for a D3 at the moment. BEsides, I just started using a D2X ! I'll make a review about it of course, but when the D2H was a nice camera with image quality too poor for me to really use in anything else than snapshots and some instagram post, the D2X is really a camera I could use day to day without limitations (or at least not obvious ones). I'd love to have a D3, but it makes less and less sense for me as the D2X and D700 are really filling that niche !

Got one of these with two original batteries through work. I had the MH-16 briefly, but it disappeared off my desk pretty quicky... Anyway, one of the batteries worked roughly as well as yours, the other would not take a charge at all, so I figured I had nothing to lose opening that one up. I already had 18650s and similar cells laying around, so I started thinking about a lithium conversion before I even found that guide you linked. Here in the States, getting 3rd party replacement EN-4s seems to be impossible. I did the convertion using mostly parts I had on hand, just ordered some cheap AA battery holders for a spring. I found that 16650's are a much better fit, at least in my body. The 18650's are snug and require a bit of force to slide in and out of the grip. On a side note, I found that a Digipower TC-U450 universal battery charger will charge unmodified EN-4's provided you hold the battery in place with rubber bands or zipties. I'm sure other universal chargers that are capable of outputting 8.4v will work too. That may be a viable alternative to buying the MH-16. As far as AF speed goes, I've been pitting it up against other Nikon bodies at work, including the D6. It's certainly able to drive AF/AF-D series lenses much faster than anything newer! I believe it uses the same focusing motor as the F5, which is legendary for the same reason. I should point out that I've noticed AF performance issues with the OEM battery, even on a full charge. No such issues with the lithium swapped pack

Yes, the focus motor is very much my expecience as well. When I was using this D1X initially, I had two Tokina AF-D lenses, and when driving my old 80-200 f/2.8, the torque of the focus motor was so high that it made the camera roll a little bit in my hands. Absolute insanity how fast that motor is. Much faster than my D700 or D2 cameras for sure.

I’ve recently taken 3 cameras with me on a trip through Europe: Sigma SDQH, FpL, and Canon R5. The SDQH, with the right lens (I’m using the epic Sigma 28mm 1.4 Art, not a crappy adapted lens), just kills all the other cameras I have. I can’t believe how boring and digitalish the pictures from the other cameras are. I haven’t been this impressed since the ancient Canon 1Ds with a CCD sensor.

Good day, nice to have you back. l’ve read somewhere that Nikkor lenses are great donors but the Nikon DSLR camera bodies poor recipients. As you correctly point out the flange distance is too long for lenses from most other systems. Although the Tamron Adaptall 2 lenses will happily mount on Nikon. Interesting that the split prism focusing screen could be donated from the older Nikon SLR for the Canon 5D. I’ve found mirrorless cameras like the Sony A7 and Olympus EM10 mk2 work well with older manual focus lens. Focus peaking is a great feature.
@uncertainrelease
@uncertainrelease 2 ай бұрын
Yes, the great strengh of mirrorless is the ability to have that focus peaking as well as super short flange distances allowing to adapt pretty much everything from rangefinder to SLR lenses. Lens mount like the Nikon Z mount can even adapt other mirrorless mounts like Sony E or Fuji X (!)

At 2:15 you say the mirror was not correctly aligned, but you were able to fix it. Can you tell me how you fixed the mirror alignment? I had the same problem when the mirror fell out of my 5D, and my local camera shop repaired it and reglued it, but then I noticed the mirror was misaligned. I returned it to my local camera shop but they were unable to fix the misalignment, as they said the mirror was glued into a frame, so they could not explain how the misalignment occured. As I had also purchsed the camera from them they replaced it with another camera that had already had the mirror modification done, but it always intrigued me how the mirror misalignment occured, and how to fix it. Hope you can help solve the mystery. Thanks.
@uncertainrelease
@uncertainrelease 2 ай бұрын
When you say it was mis-aligned, what is the issue specifically? Is the mirror simply not straight on the tray, or is the manual focusing out of whack compared to the actual sensor placement? My case was the latter. I needed a 1.3mm allen key to be able to turn the posts inside the mirror box on which the mirror rests on (that's how you calibrate the camera). Just turning those wasn't quite enough, so I added some spacers on the focus screen itself to bring it closer to the mirrorbox, then re-did the calibration with the allen key to get it as close to possible. It's not perfect but it's close enough. I don't know if that's your issue though? I know the 5D can have some mirror issues, I have no idea if that's what you're talking about.
@duncanthorn6338
@duncanthorn6338 2 ай бұрын
@@uncertainrelease No, my issue was a misalignment with the mirror and the sensor. So what you saw through the viewfinder was not what was recorded on the sensor. The whole image was shifted up slightly when in landscape orientation. So a little was cropped from the bottom of the image and added to the top of the image, compared to what you saw through the viewfinder.
@uncertainrelease

@@duncanthorn6338 Oh okay, this wasn't my issue, my guess would be that the mirror is too high compared to what it should be, but I have no further information or knowledge on how to fix that, besides disassbling the mirror tray and finding a thinner mirror... :(
