I heard Hao Rao's performance yesterday in the Royal Baths Park in Warsaw. Despite a huge storm approaching, Hao Rao played Chopin's etudes for the people of Warsaw. After one hour, the organizers had to take safety measures but we could stay there forever listening to Hao Rao with admiration and appreciation.

A stupendous recital. I agree with Devardman that the second Ballade was exceptionally good. The deceptively simple opening is boring in most pianists' hands, even very famous ones. Here, it is rocking (amazing that even famous pianists fail to capture the rocking 6/8 rhythm) and subtle. Throughout the recital, his technique is as steady as rock even in the hardest passages, but it is the grasp of the overall structure that impresses. The Ballades can seem rhapsodic in many interpretations, but with the trajectory of each piece crystal clear in his mind, he could introduce tiny hesitations and breathing room without harming the flow of the music. While Lang Lang enraptures the audience and infuriates the connoisseurs and critics, Rao is a pianists' pianist. Those who know this music inside out are bound to be enormously impressed by the optimal interpretative choices made. As I have remarked before, piano playing is not just an art but also a sport. It pays to have a coach to point things out to you. Dr Li is a wonderful 'coach' in this respect. A good example of the excellent interpretative choices made is the Polonaise. This is so well known that it risks comparison with everyone's favourite interpretations. Rao has made it special, and demonstrated how this Polonaise SHOULD be played, by playing the restatement of the main theme heroically rather than as fast as possible, and not letting the tempo sag in the disquieting and meandering passage leading up to the recapitulation of the main theme. This is not just masterly, but correct (meaning others are wrong). If there is one tiny flaw in this live recital, it is in the statement of the main theme in the Fourth Ballade. In a recital, one's concentration may lapse after playing at an exalted level for half an hour, but I think there is perhaps not enough preparation for this passage. As written, it is frustratingly repetitive, so how to make it into an evolving story takes a lot of imagination and interpretative ingenuity. Dr Li can help him here, but for one who has transitioned from a teenager to an adult, he would do well to read European literature and to listen to opera (Chopin was fond of Bellini and bel canto).

Performance of 2nd ballade best I've ever heard. He makes me hear Chopin with a new seat of ears; i'm hearing him anew after 55 years of listening. Well, this could be said for his performances of all of these ballades.
