I'm half Lithuanian on my mother's side. There was a Lithuanian Clubhouse in Freehold, NJ where my maternal grandparents and aunts and uncles grew up. I had an uncle thru marriage and my mother's middle sister who married him live in MA near Springfield for many years and I had two cousins grow up there.

The Lithuanian-Brazilians in question are not immigrants, they were born in Brazil. It is mostly their grandparents generation that were immigrants (in the 1920s). As such, they are Brazilian in culture, speak Portuguese natively, etc. (with only a minority speaking Lithuanian language at all but still less fluently than they do speak Portuguese). While remembering the Lithuanian roots and culture, most of them still likely feel more at home in Brazil than Lithuania. Many also have "mixed roots" with at least one grandparent non-Lithuanian.

What are the chances for a fourth referendum and finally allowing people to hold their current citizenship after a regular naturalist?
@TrueLithuaniaАй бұрын
There are always chances, but with the current referendum rules the result would likely be the same (and everyone knows it, thus making it unlikely they would declare another referendum). The problem is not that the people do not support the proposition as they voted in favor in both referenda. The problem is that Lithuania has some of the tightest referendum rules among the democratic countries in the world. It requires 50%+ of all eligible voters to vote for the propostion but that is generally not possible as turnouts are typically barely above 50% on average. There were no successful referenda in Lithuania for many years. Many Lithuanians just never vote, low turnout became a cultural thing and thus likely impossible to change. So, it could only pass if the rules are not so tight, e.g. "50%+ of those who voted". However, such change in referendum law doesn't have a popular backing as most political parties in Lithuania prefer the situation where elected politicians rather than people make decisions. This is the case with most laws but this particular law requires referendum by constitution (and that can also be only changed by referendum). So, there may be alternative options, like a kind of "overseas citizenship" (e.g. India), there is already a right-to-citizenship certificate in Lithuania (the rights offered by which may be expanded at least to the level of a similar "Polish card"), there may be other decisions as well (but some of the suggested more radical decisions would likely be unconstitutional sans referendum).

My Ancestors were born in Coaldale and many of them are buried in neighboring Summit Hill. Sgt Edward "Rex" Sicenavage and his Lithuanian family were members of this very church. Rex was one of 50+ Coaldale men killed in WW2. He was a gunner in the 893rd Tank Destroyer Battalion, Company C. His tanks' nicknames was "Chop Chop" He died on Chop Chop III. They held services for him here when the family was notified of his death on December 13, 1944. I'm so glad this church was preserved an important piece of American Heritage!

I grew up in Westville and I've never heard about this story... The Lithuanian aspect is well known, along with the St.Peter & Paul cemetery. My former father in law was of Lithuanian descent, along with many others... I may look and ask around about it so I can possibly get more information... I'm almost 50 so I'd say there's not a whole lot of time left to get the scoop before everyone who knows about it passes on... Interesting story...

The fascists of True Lithuania dont want you to know that Klaipeda is a gift of the Sovirt Union to the Lithuanians...
@TrueLithuania3 ай бұрын
Simply not correct. Lithuania acquired Klaipėda in 1923 after the Lithuanian-supported Klaipėda Revolt and it was not related to the Soviet Union or Russia anyhow. Klaipėda Revolt was the last in a series of events that established Republic of Lithuania (1918-1923). In these independence wars, Soviet Union (bolsheviks) stood against Lithuania trying to attach it to the Soviet Union but, at that time, they failed. Nazi Germany then took over Klaipėda Region in 1939 and the rest of Lithuania in 1941. When Soviet Union (re)conquered Lithuania in 1944-1945, it established its administrative unit of Lithuanian SSR on the basis of Republic of Lithuania that existed prior to Nazi German occupations, so, it included all the Lithuanian areas that had been controlled by the Nazi Germany during WW2. In any case, this Lithuanian SSR 1944-1990 was not independent anyhow, it was occupied by the Soviet Union. Soviet Union gave nothing „to Lithuanians“ in 1944, it just took over the entire Lithuania, including Klaipėda, Kaunas, etc. from the Nazi Germany (replacing one occupation by another). „Lithuanian SSR“ was merely an adiministrative unit within the Soviet Union with very limited powers. Independence of Lithuania happened only in 1990, only at that time did Lithuanians regain sovereignity over all of their cities from the Soviet Union, including Klaipėda.

130,000 Lithuanians (~5% of the population at the time) were deported by the soviet union. You might wanna go read a (history) book, Pavlos, before calling others names.

@@TrueLithuania The “independent” Lithuania offered Klaipeda to Nazis on March 1939. The city is undoubtedly a gift of the Soviet Union. The entire Lithuania is a gift of the Soviet Union to the Lithuanias…How many Lithuanians fought on the side of Hitler? Those scums declared heroes after 1991. 5% is too little if we take into account how many partisans, communists, Jews were murdered from these fascists. True Lithuania are their worthy successors…

If I was to get this citizenship as an American would I have to forfeit my American passport?
@TrueLithuania4 ай бұрын
If your parent, grandparent or great grandparent was a Lithuanian citizen and moved out before 1990 (but after 1918), in most cases you can keep your American passport. If they left even before Lithuanian citizenship was established (i.e. before World War 1, before 1918 independence) then in most cases you couldn't keep American citizenship.
