Both would be great on the more XC trails down there. I think the Ripley AF will be a little bit more forgiving when you’re in the bigger terrain down there.

It's not just the sweet spot that's important, it's the seat angle too. As they get steeper, for every 1 degree you lose approximately 1cm of cockpit reach - the roominess between your seat and your handlebars. I'm looking at the new Nicolai Saturn 16 in XL and XXL, compared to my Santa Cruz Megatower in XXL. I'm 6'6' with even leg/torso length and, despite the Saturn in XL being almost identical to the Megatower in XXL, i'm thinking it'll be best to go XXL on the Saturn, as the steeper seat tube angle will push me closer to the bars. I also have an early Trail Pistol that has a steeper SA than the Megatower and I have the seat slammed as far back as it goes, run a 50mm stem and still feel cramped compared to the Megatower.

Have you looked at bar rise as a factor? It really does depend on the rider I think the key is what each thing does because even if someone is the same size they may want it different. It would be cool if you could rent some kit for the this purpose at a reasonable price. Then determine what sizes would work best for you on given bike. That way you would have a really good idea what to buy to optimize the setup for your wants and needs. There would still be some variables that would effect it such as weight and actual fit on the components you buy in the end but, it maybe close enough to make choice that's best for you.

Has anyone ridden a Spur with the original RS SID shock and compared with the Fox DPS? I have a SID shock and Fox 34 130mm. I don't want to give up any climbing efficiency, but I would take a little improvement in shock absorption. Seems like the SID is easily overwhelmed in bigger terrain.
@bikersedge
@bikersedge 6 күн бұрын
I’ve ridden it with both. I don’t think there’s all that much difference between them either in climbing or descending performance. I don’t think you’re going to get noticeably better bump compliance or worse pedal efficiency from the DPS. If you went to a significantly larger volume shock you might start to notice a bit. But for the most part, frame kinematics dictate the lions share of the suspension feel.

Interesting test. I have done something similar recently and it appears that it really does not matter what is on the rear of the tire for uphill climbing (enduro or XC). It is only the front tire that affects the time.
@bikersedge

That's very interesting. I'd imagine the rear has a bigger impact as its the tire driving the bike.

I was able to demo one this weekend and I couldn't agree more with what you said. The GRIP is insane. I cleared several tech climbs that I often spin out or get bucked on, but it for sure didn't feel efficient. It wasn't bad, but the grip factor outweighed any issues with it not feeling quick on the climbs. It was also one of the quietest bikes I've ridden. I really loved it. If I was going to the bike park more than 3 times a year I would buy one. It did feel "fun" still but a little heavier than I would like. Unfortunately, I pedal too much for this version to make sense.

I had the Spur and wanted something more trail and plush for my rides on medium chunky trails by my house, so I got this bike because bigger fork and slacker head tube. It came with the Fox Live Valve and had a rough time on it. Now I got rid of Live Valve and put Fox Factory new grip X and float on it and the front end still feels harsh (a little better) but Im still frustrated I just want a comfortable plush bike. Should I get a Ripmo or something? What bikes feel plush and damp?
@bikersedge
@bikersedge 8 күн бұрын
You’re not really going to find a “plush” bike in the 120mm category. The thing that makes them quick and zippy uphill is the same thing that keeps them from feeling plush and comfy on the DH. It’s a matter of priorities. If plush is your number one priority then get a big bike with a lot of travel and an active suspension platform.
