I love manufacturing tech. Firstly because it makes creating easy & accessible to people who might not be making things otherwise. Secondly, because it makes truly handmade products that much more valuable.

There is no such thing as scrap wood. Especially black walnut. I am hand carving my fourth "leaf" shaped bowl from my scraps of black walnut right now from a cartouche pediment carving I did for a customer from black walnut. I have maybe ten cat litter tubs full of mesquite lumber cut offs from other jobs. I literally never throw wood away. I always snag up beat up solid wood furniture that people are getting rid of to salvage for future projects. I recently dismantled a solid wood piano from the 1960's. That wood was a gold mine. I planted a bunch of trees on my property just to have a source of free branches for chairs and tables. I once bought an entire oak barn built during the civil war and paid someone to go disassemble the entire thing and ship it to me. I made alot of projects off of that barn. They guys even saved all the old hardware and nails for me, which I used. That hardware alone was pure treasure.

I like your idea to get the bigger board through. Did you consider that you'd probably be going to edge joint as well and if you have a relatively flat face, you have something there to reference your edge off and then maybe it will reduce or eliminate that extra hand planing.

5 ten thousandths or 1/2000ths of an inch is a tight tolerance usually required on something like a press fit bearing that is not easily removed by hand. I’ve read about wood planers getting shavings off that thin, but joints not so much. This is a list of basic tolerances on wood and the machines and tools that cut them Router: ± 0.005″ or 0.13 mm Lathe: ± 0.005″ or 0.13 mm Router (Gasket Cutting Tools): ± 0.030″ or 0.762 mm Milling (3-axis): ± 0.005″ or 0.13 mm Milling (5-axis): ± 0.005″ or 0.13 mm Engraving: ± 0.005″ or 0.13 mm Rail Cutting Tolerances: ± 0.030″ or 0.762 mm Screw Machining: 0.005″ or 0.13 mm Steel Rule Die Cutting: ± 0.015″ or 0.381 mm Surface Finish: 125RA

How heavy was the entire finished table? That table top alone must have weighed alot by itself. I once made a throne chair out of mesquite wood and the chair weighed 600lbs when finished. I also made a fireplace mantel surround from 3 giant juniper logs. When it was installed it took 6 guys to put it up and I could walk under it. I am working on an Alligator juniper throne chair now that weighs about 400 lbs. Big furniture is just fun.
