Ever since the 79 were placed in block 7, you have the obvious 6 in r8c2 just sitting there, leading to a sprint finish. NF 14 minutes.

Very good beginning. After that, I thought the puzzle became a bit nasty. But with a little bit of persistence, you may look at the grid fron a stting place in r2c7 and look around: there are three digits seeing it from the left, 3 more from below, and still 3 more in the block. 9 digits in all, only one being repeated (the 5s), so 8 different digits, the sole absentee being the 3. That naked 3 allows for considerable progress, but I still had a problem, with row 5. In it cell r5c7 is a 18. But if you look harder, you realise that if the 1 in r5c7, you will also end up with a 1 in r5c5. So 8 in r5c7 and yes, 1 in r5c5. Now, the puzzle is done. Ouf !

Too bad you did not look straight. The moment you have the 68 oblique pair in the middle and upper rows of block 4, coupled with the fact as you identified that the 8s were also confined to the upper and midlle rows in block 5 (col4), then in row 6 there is only one place for an 8, and that is in column 9. Game over.

Without using pencil marks, but checking all rows and columns that have at least 4 digits, a few pairs become obvious, and it then resolves fairly easily. 11 mins.

20th minute: having established the 6s in the middle row of block 2, it became obvious the 6 in block 1 was now in r3c2 and, from there, another 6 in r1c8 as you knew. Ah ! Great, at least you caught up quickly enough ! Phew ! :) :) Noooooo ! Why did you not just place the 9 in r1c9 to simply finish the puzzle. Just play as if you were teaching a beginner !

For a long time, since around minute 10 or so, you have had a 37 remote pair in column 8 at rows 2 and 9, hence 4 in r8c8 and 8 in r4c8. Puzzle done.

A quickie. At the point you are going for pencil mark, the right side of block 5 is 689 where the 8 can only be in row 5 with the 69 as a pair. This puzzle was fun to play thanks to nice construction allowing for fast progress based on playing block patterns: for example, note block 7 with the 6 and 8 pointing from above in the middle column and from the right in the middle row, forcing a 68 oblique corner pair, and the 17 pointing also from the right forcing a 17 pair up and down in the middle column of our block, with the 3 now in r8c2 and the 2 next to it in col 3.. Notation free in 12m34s.

fingers crossed for Arizona - candidate Kari Lake is falling in the polls and we hope Rueben Gallego will win the very important Senate seat - hopefully Kamala will prevail and win the presidency and will need the Senate to enact programs that will help all people going forward - take care

I started at your 17 mins. then without pencil marks a pair in R1 gave a few more digits, after that it solves in 3 mins.

Not too strnuous. The 37 remote pair in row 1 places the 2 at the top corner of block 3, and the rest is ultra-simple sidoku.

As at 11 minutes: as you have noted, you have ghost 2 and 3 on the left flank of block 9; which of course means there cannot be a 3 on the left flank of block 3. With this, cell r3c7 seems to be a very unpopular nest, where no one wants to squat. Oh !, Except for the naked 9, of course. The next one is not particularly easy, but in row 7, the 2,3 and 9 are only possible in col 2,6 and 7. So, a triple that excludes the 4 from r7c6, and hence now, a 45 pair in row 7 at col 4 and 8; and also a 45 pair in column 4 at rows 7 and 9. With this, you have the basis for a relatively easier finish. Maybe I missed something else in other locations, but I thought this was somewhat harder to spot than most NY Times of recent dates.

As at 14th minute (from the time you found the 8 and 9 in block 8, where the 8 is now in the upper row and the 7 in the lower row: 78 remote pair in r8c1 and r8c9 confines squeezes the 9 in r8c8. Puzzle done.

You didn't need the XY wing, there was 39 Unique Rectangle in plain sight in C4 and C8, with a 6 to stop the UR.

Nice puzzle from the Guardian today. To make it even more fun, I decided my first digit would be placed in the empty block 1, with the help of course of the 128 triple which I saw after 1 milisecond. I had to lose time taking a good hard look at the left side of the grid, but yes indeed, 1 in r1c2 ( and 28 to be a pair in block 7's middle column above the 6).

A matter of simple logic. Cell r8c1 has been identified as a 56. Moving right, 5 an 6 appear side by side in the upper row 7 of block 8. So a 56 in block 9 at r9c7. The puzzle falls apart. Starting of course with a 3 in r9c4 and a 4 in r9c6.
