At last, I find somewhere that understands reciprocity. Even Wiki fails to define whether the diagram is pin view or rear view. On this video we see coloured pins, pin view. A photo real image. You wouldn't believe the web pages that don't say which, and the manufacturer of the plug I bought shows the diagram saying "socket rear view" which doesn't inspire confidence in the product! Yea, there is always the multi-meter, but the right info saves time. Now how do you check brake lights on yer own?

If you're changing an existing plug, be aware that although colour code standards are published, manufacturers don't adhere to them. So for instance my Bailey caravan does not use the wire colours shown in this vid. If you're swapping a plug, take photos of all the connections before disconnecting, and note the keyway position relative to the wiring. It can be a very tough job if you don't know which wire connects to which pin :) :)

My Thule bike rack has a 7 pin plug and my new car has a 13 pin socket. I realise that it is possible to buy an adapter but wondered if it would be possible to remove the existing socket and fit a 13 pin plug but only use my existing 7 wires. Many thanks.

Hi, Yes you can replace the 7 pin plug and fit a 13 pin plug and wire in the existing 7 wires. The colour code remains the same. www.fieldfare.co.uk/line-1-12v-13-pin-plug.html

Do you have a video showing the wiring in the caravan?

I don't see why not. Things to watch, 1) sealing the smaller cable, in the cable entry point (bulk it with tape). 2) corrosion inside the wires, moisture gets everywhere - you will find 3) friability of the old cable sheath after years of UV bombarding it.
