Speaking of HARDWARE - which makes does Linus recommend first: - to AVOID because they don't work well or at all with Linux? - and second, what hardware runs Linux normally or even optimally?

2024 and everything is still the same. Although Linux desktops have gained a tiny bit of traction lately, probably due to Windows abusing their users machines, more and more people are slowly moving to Linux.

He nails it. The premise that we should encourage kids to all learn to program is faulty. We need people who do a wide variety of things. There's already plenty of incentive to become a programmer.

I've tried a couple distros because I'm very interested in Linux systems but the software/game compatibility is such a massive turn off for me. Sure, you can get some things working with a little bit of tinkering but some programs just out right don't work on Linux. With Windows I don't have to do any of that tinkering or looking for alternatives because it works out of the box. I hope that one day Linux becomes big enough that companies have to make Linux compatible software and I'm able to do the switch to Linux from Windows. If I ever get a second computer I would love to use Linux on it, but having Linux as a daily driver is just inconvenient at the moment.

I re-watch this every few years. Not for the Nvidia part, though it's a nice bonus, but for everything else. It makes me realize how amazing time we've been living technologically. Coursera and different open learning platforms are going strong, Raspberry Pl is a big deal these days, and gaming is making a major push on Linux. For the first time ever, I have been able to daily drive a linux PC with very little compromise. Even Linus himself is a bit nicer these days 😄 This is my first time watching this since moving to IT, so now I have a new perspective on all this. I would love to have a guest lecture from Linus, but this is pretty good too.

The European Union has bad laws that favor these big companies. Unix is a serious system that needs to reach the desktop too
@aurelf31583 ай бұрын
We need good laws to protect companies from dominant companies. The first step, banning Android on pre-installed mobiles. The same thing, the prohibition of installation on computers - everyone should choose what he wants when buying. Alphabet's dominance, like Microsoft's, is doing a lot of damage to the development of the software market in general

Well, Android is more of a Java OS than anything else. Yes, there is a linux kernel underneath there but as far as anything the user interacts with is an environment built on top of Dalvik or whatever they call their JVM. But yeah, for just linux as a desktop OS, it's not ideal because it's a Unix clone. If you study the architectural details of Unix (the way it does I/O etc) you can see it's really suboptimal for what makes for a good clean OS for a personal computer.

Yea it still hasn't happened.. but as someone else here mentioned: lack of professional software. I'm trying Linux Mint on my desktop and currently I'm really struggling to get fusion 360 running properly. It feels like a chicken and egg problem, not enough people use Linux so developers don't make their software for it, and PC manufacturers won't preinstall Linux because not everyone will be able to run the software they need.

I think that everyone should be made aware of what coding CAN do. Just knowing that there is this magic tool which can save everyone hundreds if not thousands of hours of their life is valuable. If you see a problem that requires a lot of manual work on a computer, it can most likely be automated. But many don't know that are waste their time doing unnecessary work.

I started doing tech support for Windows 95 when it was new. I continued supporting 9x through about the year 2000. I have toyed around with Ubuntu and a few tiny Linux versions. One of the barriers that I faced was the user interface. The other barrier was permissions. Maybe if I wasn't trying to do technical things the permissions wouldn't have been an issue. By this point, we have generations of people who have become accustomed to the Windows interface. We also have people who have become accustomed to Apple's interface. Getting a polished GUI that is intuitive and functional seems to be one of the sticking points. It has been a few years since I tried Gnome. (if I remember correctly, that was standard on Ubuntu last time I tried it.) I tried xfce or KD something and it always felt like _I_ was just trying to recreate the Windows experience because it works for me. I felt like Gnome was trying to recreate the Apple experience. At least with chromebooks, there is a common interface, but I don't really think it counts because it's a very locked down operating system. Unless I have misunderstood, a Chromebook is intended to be almost a dummy terminal to access web apps. I'm sure there are use cases for this, but I can't imagine it being the go-to for a home computer.

If someone can come up with a GUI for dummies on Linux that is not geared towards tech herds, just like on Ms Windows and Apple that might be a start. A new hardware company which exclusively sells Linux machines with the GUI for dummies would slowly lure users towards Linux. Just my 2cents

Sure it doesn't help that the average consumer doesn't want to install an OS. But GNU + Linux isn't as friendly either. Even for basic functionality, you still have to use the terminal to install. Is there a problem? Oh great you'll have to google what line you have to put into the terminal of which you have no idea what it actually does. Linux is cool. But it's far too cumbersome and that is mainly because a large part of the community and devs don't want to make things easier it seems. Even something as simple as creating your own shortcut and making it run at start up requires you to hack the mainframe of the NSA while this is only a three step procedure in Windows. It isn't just a meme. That is the actual Linux experience no matter which Distro. Linux on phone (or specifically Android) fixed what Linux on desktop still doesn't do. Making it user friendly for all. From software companies/developers to your grandma.

A preinstalled OS is certainly a major factor. Most people just cannot be bothered, or do not really have the incentive to install Linux, why would they do this if they get all they need from preinstalled Windows? So yes, that's partly the reason. Chromebooks, don't really run Linux, it's sort of based on it, it's just Google's services, all your apps run somewhere else in the cloud. Computers did kind of start this way, seems we're going back to it for different reasons. Another major reason Linux didn't win in the desktop were games. This was THE losing factor, it does not matter if your OS is better, if there's no games on it, that's it. Apparently, Betamax was a better tech than VHS, but the cheaper and less capable VHS won because there was porn in VHS. In a similar fashion, the lack of games was the major reason for Linux failing in the desktop. I've heard people say there's so many libs to program on, there's no standard desktop, and this could be a reason, well no, on Windows there is also too many libs or ways to program on, they all work, just as they all do in Linux. As for the desktop environment, it's just an abstraction, it doesn't really matter what desktop you're targeting, and it'd be so easy to target them all, so that's not really the issue. It's games, that's what it is, and now it's too late for Linux to ever win in the desktop.
