He keeps saying it is our perception, but it is down to his presentation. This is a great example of how humans can easily be manipulated.

4:08 Except they're not exactly the same length as the corners are further than the wedges. 8:38 Now it appears that one face is spitting into the mouth of the other😄

I think it's Scott Kim who did the false/true and ambiguity visuals. He used to contribute to Scientific American and Games.

In the illusion of the boxes he says “The truth is there are two boxes but our eyes won’t permit us to see both at once.” This isn’t true. There are zero boxes on the paper. A box is a 3D object, and the paper is 2D. There are two 2D representations of two 3D objects that are drawn from different perspectives, it is impossible to see both at the same time because only one exists as a 3D object on each plane.

observe: here, is drawing of a circle on a piece of paper. But turning the piece of paper 180 degrees on its y axis, reveals that the circle is, in fact, a straight line. So, which is truth and what is a lie? Perspective is only a matter of perception. Change you perspective to change your perception.

I really enjoyed this installation. A black man fighting an imaginary enemy is such a powerful commentary on racial identity politics, and an Asian man being beaten a person who's identity has been scrubbed from sight is a similarly powerful commentary on the media's portrayal of the perpetrators of Asian hate. Truly powerful stuff.

Some of these are deceptive because of the lighting of the show, not because of the optical examples themselves.

I hope when I die I wake up in a warm library study with antique upholstery, and Johnathan Frakes is waiting for me there with a smug grin on his face and tells me "You probably thought you lived a full life and died. You're wrong. Our perceptions can deceive us." And the CRT TV of my childhood turns off and my mom brings out cookies and milk.
