Monica was a joy as a teenager, bubbly, happy, excited by how far her talents could take her. Today, she is a gracious, poised lady who does a lot of charitable work, among other things. She has a sweet nature, imo, and would undoubtedly have surpassed Graf's GS record, given her youth, if it hadn't been for that crazed Graf fan. Incidentally, he got off with a suspended sentence, which may possibly have been a factor in Monica's lengthy recovery, the sense of injustice she may have felt.

Monica Seles had won EIGHT Grand Slam singles titles shortly after turning 19. Seles had won SEVEN Grand Slam titles at age 18. Martina Hingis had won 5 Grand Slam titles at age 18. Steffi Graf had won 3 at age 18. Boris Becker and Bjorn Borg had both won 2 GS titles at age 18.

When Monica Seles won the 1992 U.S. Open... she had won SEVEN Grand Slam singles titles at age 18. She had her 19th birthday on December 2nd 1992 - and then won the 1993 Australian Open to put her at EIGHT GS titles as a teen. Monica had won 3 Australian Opens in a row. She had won 3 French Opens in a row. She had won two U.S Opens in a row. Monica had won SEVEN of the last EIGHT Grand Slam events that she had entered. She still had three more Grand Slam events to play as a teen. Then a German man tried to kill Seles during a tennis match in Germany. This person, that some say was hired to remove Seles from the game, didn't even serve any jail time. Some people still believe that Steffi's dad was behind this villainous act. Seles would almost certainly have won 10 Grand Slam titles as a teen (and possibly 11) if not for the pure evil that exists in this world. She might have had twenty by the time she was 23.

Monica was simply amazing. Despite being so young and inexperienced in the early 90s, she achieved so much. She's definitely an all time great. I really wished she won the 1998 French Open finals against Aranxta Sanchez Vicario.

Monica was a kid here. She played her 1st full year on tour in 1989 at just 15. She was still very inexperienced in the early 90s. The fact that she won so much was very impressive. Unfortunately we never got to see her peak because of the stabbing. She was still improving, as evident by her improved serve in 1993 Australia open finals. She was likely going to get to her peak in early 1994, but unfortunately we would truly never know what would have happened. In my opinion she's one of the all time greats along with Serena, Steffi, Martina and Chris. Her influence on modern tennis is undeniable.

And STILL a slumping Steffi had a BIGGER lead in the WTA rankings at the end of 1990 than Seles EVER had in 1991-93 when she was #1. In 1991 Steffi's slump got even worse, she played only her 11th-best (!) season of her 15 full career seasons. So Seles was virtually gifted the #1 position. Still the great Steffi beat Seles up in their two matches that year!

1992 was the beginning of Monica becoming even more ruthless with every facet of her game becoming even stronger. Minus the concentration challenges in the Wimbledon final, she was playing at level that seemed impossible.

No, Seles was already in decline. She had only a 92.1 winning percentage in the 12 months before the stabbing (May 1992 to April 1993). Lower than the 93.8 % in the previous 12 months (May 1991 to April 1992). She had visibly gained weight (which would continue until the mid-90s). Anyway, her level in 1992 was also significantly lower than Navratilova's in 1983/84 or Steffi's in 1988/89 (or in 1995/96).

Best return, best backhand, best passing shots, best angles, drop shots on the rise, best change of direction, overhead off the bounce from mid-court and the baseline, and strongest mental game without all of Serena’s melodramatics. Most grand slam titles as a teenager. One thing MN and CE are right about: Monica would have the most GS titles had it not been for that evil spawn who is thankfully dead.

I think maybe the 1992 French Open was her most impressive win. In the fourth round, Kijimuta was serving for 5-1 in the final set against Monica, then in the quarter finals, semis and final Monica had to beat Capriati, Sabatini and Graf, all of whom had beaten Monica in their previous match against her.

FO 1992 is the proof of her incredible willpower and mental fortitude. My favorite win is AO 93. Both Sabatini and Graf had stretched and beaten Seles in 92 and she completely dominated Gaby in the semis and calmly dispatched Graf despite losing the first set (it was the first time Graf lost to Seles after winning the first set and also the first loss on hard courts).

He was very surprised that Seles skipped the tour for more than 2 years. Maybe Seles realized how much Steffi improved in 1993 and was afraid to get destroyed more often as she was in Wimbledon 92? Do you think it is a coincidence that Seles returned exactly in the same month in 1995 when Steffi's dad was arrested for tax evasion?
