while visiting my Ballard Food Bank today 8/19/24 around 11:30 AM an employee of DOT came in and got a to go bag, usually these are for the homeless. Why do you allow this? They are working just south of the food bank. I find it insulting and very wasteful.

If you keep putting roundabouts in, more effort to educate drivers about how to navigate them will be needed. People are clueless. I see folks in the circle stopping to play "go, no you go".

I remember this disaster and, living close-by in the Twin Cities, I remember the Interstate 35 bridge collapse disaster. What these two disasters have in common is the incredibly short amount of time it took to build replacement bridges.

1:43 @WSDOT, any chance could you add a new staircase on the west side of the Elm Street cul-de-sac (left side of the video) to directly connect the west crosswalk to the top of the new pedestrian ramp? I know it wouldn't be ADA accessible, but for the vast majority of people who are able-bodied, that would be a nice shortcut for people to use as opposed to the long out-of-the-way ADA accessible ramp that connects to the east crosswalk. As long as you provide an additional step up at the top of the staircase it should prevent those in wheelchairs or with canes from mistaking the stairs for an accessible route. Though I'm sure if you don't build stairs there, most people will still cut through that section because it's the most convenient and easiest route for them to get to and from downtown.

Couldn't they have less paving to connect the instead of the huge amount now? Where are the bioswales to handle rainwater runoff. Bioswales look better than retention and detention ponds because they maje better use of space and incorporate biome-appropriate plantings instead of being an ugly fenced structure or something else that looks stuck into place...

I love stories like this. When u get the govt to move or get out of the way shit gets done. Think about WW2 and huge amount that got built in this country. This nation can get it done when u get the govt out of the way. Think about that when u vote this fall.

oh look another example of "if you dont schedule maintenance, the machines will do it for you at vastly increased cost." had the bridge been replaced in the off season as preventative maintenance, it wouldn't have needed to be replaced at the most inconvenient time imaginable. steel and concrete dont burn.

Glad to see this railroad is back up and running. At least when the fire happened, it allowed the construction crew to build a new and stronger bridge to replace the old wooden one. Who knows how long that wooden bridge has been there. It's also impressive to see how little time it took to build the new bridge.

Awesome story! This basically shows the impact of bureaucracy… turning 24 months into 2. The governor should declare a state of emergency to allow rehab of the ferry Hyak and put it back in service…. and to get the planned new ferries built quickly. There are a lot of places the money can come from like our carbon tax on fuel among other taxes.

Doing it fast is a problem because it’s so much cheaper. Material is cheaper now than it will be tomorrow. And labor hours are the same whether you have 10 guys working 1000 hours or 100 guys working 100 hours. People think it costs more to do it fast. But it mostly, it’s just companies wanting to drag the project out forever so they can charge cost overruns and overtime labor. It’s not “Americans putting their minds to it” it’s just what should be done in every project. We have plenty of stuff that needs to be done NOW. Every project should be done with the same sense of urgency, that how you advance PAST where you are now, instead of just working to stand still.
