I agree with snarple, and imo the two kinds of building thingy should be called depth and color. Depth means adding depth to the building like a sclupture and color more like painting

But this only works when looking at builds from a distance, it completely misses the point when we come up close. That's the hard part about building, it has too look good from all angles and the block pallet we can pick from becomes far more scares then. Wouldn't the real key to building nice things be to also know how close the player can get at any given point and based on that limit or expand the block pallet? In some extreme cases there will be very few blocks that can go together so perhaps even more important is to know which shape to select in order to optimise distance from which player will look at the build in order to increase our avabile colour pallet while simultaneously retaining visually pleasing shape itself.

Some may say this is a bad tutorial, but this is absolutely amazing for me. I like using tutorials more as inspiration for styles more than copying and pasting someone else's build. The fast pace was really nice too.

started making this house in survival and just destroyed it all halfway bc fck this "tutorial", the house isn't even that good compared to the effort it takes ( the effort being trying to follow along only to find out this guy just changes stuff without showing it). i can't do better, but i've seen many tutorials that actually are GOOD, do better. literally halfway through making this house and putting up with this guys "tutorial" i had a moment of clarity and thought why tf am i doing this? i am now free from the prison of this "tutorial" <3 god bless

1:00 that's actually stupid. Because in Minecraft we would experience builds and other things mostly from relatively close distance not a very far one. The "really close up" is the distance beyond which a player would rarely look at the building. This is why I actually HATE texturing, and often find heavily textured build (especially when they use blocks to pretend they are something different that they are) just ugly. Because while it may give somewhat decent effect from the distance it does that by a HUGE sacrifice of the look up close. And the house is pretty much the proper scale for Minecraft buildings. Also this mountain doesn't look boring. It looks NATURAL. Which is a very good thing. And yeah, just as I though. The "textured"/"colored" version just looks messy and uggly. It is actually LESS appealing. And the fact it doesn't look like stone is just a complete dealbreaker. If a build doesn't look nice and natural up close no amount of great looking from the distance is able to make up for this. So in the end it's not trick to build better. It's trick to build messier. And actually worse.

I do think the premise of this video is a little misleading. This video isn't really about "how to improve your building", but more "how to achieve this specific style of building" - which is: scenic natural builds that are meant to be observed from a distance and not beholden to scale or any interactivity. This advice rarely applies to someone, for example, buiding cities or adventure maps since those both require close-up detail and plausable interactivity (such as doors that function like doors). Some of the advice about gradients and shading is still useful, but the block choice is much much more restrictive when building life-size and there was no advice given on that aspect.

I think a good example of what I mean is like, titling a video "the #1 trick to improve your art" but the video is just a lesson on impressionism (which is similar to the concept in this video). Sure the end product is very pretty, but the advice is useless to an artist who paints in a completely different style

As a builder who likes to make my builds look good close up as well as far away, I always want to use the more crazy combinations, like crafting tables and nether gold ore as shown, but they dont work when you are walking right by the build. there are still many great options though. great video!

So many things wrong with this "tutorial". You've got some sort of fish eye lens filter over SOME of your footage, it makes some blocks look like two. wtf? The build is nice but fork me dead. One of the sloppiest guides i've ever seen LOL

Dude this tutorial sucks. I really like the build and I am a builder at heart I would say I’m decent and can follow most tutorials but this is taking so long I can’t see the corners I need to see in some parts I swear each clip a part of the floor and wall is a different length than the last clip. I wish I could follow this but I cannot it sucks. Amazing building skills but bad tutorial I found the image of this build on Pinterest and was able to better recreate it from a still photo than this video. It’s not even a tutorial it’s a timelaps with a voice over.

That build at the end is super pretty! I'm mainly a Survival player, but I've been trying to teach myself more about command blocks and world edit, and how to more effectively use them to greater effect. I am amazed at the scale of these kinds of builds and I definitely think that, with larger builds, texturing really helps define shapes and the overall style of what you're trying to achieve. Thank you for creating such a neat video, and for reading my comment! :)

The #1 Trick to Build Better in Minecraft is a very bad title to start with for this video. But we are on KZfaq I guess... this is just one style to pick up from in minecraft and doesn't always work and doesn't really translate to "building better" in Minecraft(god I wish this era of clickbait youtube thumbnails/titles was over). I'm not a fan of thumbnails where they compare a small, simple survival house with a giant creative artistic structure, calling - this one is better, you should learn this or your builds are bad. Can't just compare those two builds like that. Anyway, your technique is very nice and polished and used well, I also like using this kind of block pattern texturing/polishing style, it makes the details you want to be seen stand out and make the build smoother to look at and easier to read, instead of smearing tiny details on every third block of a giant structure, but that's another style to go for.

Talking about 'misconceptions' by others. You title a video "how to build better" but 99% of the video is about shading and coloring, texturing if you like, but you do not build at all, neither teach form or function. Everything else in this video is clear, understandable, brillant.
