Charging circuit is needed since this setup when I tried it last only for 2 to 3 months of providing the power to the clock after which it requires charging.

I checked and the LED turned bright to 1MOhm, turned blue! It's simply amazing! Connecting via diode 1N4007, R 1M, LED standard Blue. Measuring the parameters: AC input 204v, R drops 200v, LED 1.21v 90uA (microampere)! The LED behaves like a neon lamp (High V and micro current). If we take the same diode, resistance, for example, 68k and place a zener diode 2.6V (for Red LED) or 3.5-4V2 (blue-white) in parallel with the LED, we will get a circuit with diode protection against voltage surges and a brightly light diode.
