Is the hawk suffocating the dove when it steps on it?
@JK-bm6im2 күн бұрын
Well…to be honest…hawks are far more precious. They are at a risk of extinction. Doves are not.

The only thing the parent dove could have done is distract the hawk from the nest. It is common for doves to act injured near the nest if their young is in danger.

At least put some king of barrier around the nest so Hawks can't get in there. It is way too easy for them to get to the babies.

Have any of the chicks hatched and raised in this nestbox been able to reach adulthood?
@RonaldHunt-lb7gb6 күн бұрын
There have been 2-4 "batches of two" that have fledged each year for at least the last 3 years since I have had the camera.

Did you deliberately make the nest so that you could record the baby birds being preyed upon by eagles? Oh my God, imagine if your child was given bait to a lion
@Daniel_sz14 күн бұрын
It happens dude, coopers hawks takes chicks seasonally, putting a nest doesnt guarantee a hawk would be coming.. Besides, its a common practice to put artificial nests and feeders for birds, its not for the sake of atracting predators.

What a brave dad! He attacked the hawk, but unfortunately late! I'm saying dad, because male doves are more aggressive. I say this from my experience, when a crow attacked the dove's nest in my window, the dad, who had the day shift opened the wings and resisted to the crow attack. While in another attack, when it was the mother's shift, she flew immediately, without resisting. It was me who protected the eggs.

Hello. I wanted to ask you three questions: 1. In what country are you, because doves nesting in January, it must be a warm/hot place? 2. In what height is the nest of the doves? 3. Have you done the by yourself the nesting spot or the doves found it randomly?
@RonaldHunt-lb7gb2 ай бұрын
I live in Colorado in the united States. The nest platform is about 18 feet above the ground. The earliest videos show the original nest in the hardware to move my solar hot water collector. I removed that nest and built the platform you see in later videos to protect the hardware. The Eurasian Collared Doves established the original nest without any help from me. The platform I added is very close to the original location. About 6-8 inches higher and a few inches to the east. It gets cold in January. I think one of the videos indicates that one night while they were sitting on the eggs, it got down to minus 17 degrees Fahrenheit. They seem to nest year around. Slack time according to the internet is October to December. We have had nestings during most of the year. Thanks for your comments and questions. Ron Hunt

@@RonaldHunt-lb7gb Thank you very much! I did those questions, because I'm wondering to also make a nesting spot and to attract doves someway. It is weird that doves are nesting in such a cold temperature. Here in my country in Europe, the winter doesn't get really cold, but still Eurasian collared doves don't nest from October to March. Anyways, thanks again!
