I ran Wild Sheep Chase for my regular group last week! It was beautiful, they didn't trust the sheep at all, but went along with it looking for a pay day. Tense negotiations ended with them cutting down all of the Apprentice's guards and then him, and proceeded to turn the place over looking for treasure. Eventually tried to turn the sheep back into wizard, but the spell went wrong and he turned into slime. They burnt down the wizard's house to cover their tracks, and vowed never to speak of the horrors again.

There was a discussion about alignments on Facebook. One bloke said alignments are racist that a whole culture isn’t evil. He said in his games everyone is an individual with their own ideas of right and wrong and back stories and stuff. That sounds like a lot of work. Imagine a drow raiding party of 25 attacking an elven village of 340? How many players will die of old age before the DM has finished writing the back stories? Just so they can go off in 25 different directions due to their individual wants. I have trouble keeping up with the players and the handful of primary NPCs they meet, normally.

Alright so I just stumbled on you but im gonna throw in my few coins. My newest character is by all means evil. He is a duregar and former powerful figure among his community. He did a lot of evil, slavery, exploitation, deception...etc. But he was betrayed, got his hands made unusable (he was a blacksmith) and exiled. He found a new path by becoming a cleric of a powerful entity who repaired his hands and gave him purpose. The character is still very much evil, having distaste for weakness, treating others with lack of respect. However he is on a path of redemption, doing little acts of good. He will call you weak for getting injured but he will then stand and protect you while healing your wounds.

@@PrezzieDnD I did slightly tone down the full story, but yeah he is ryly fun to play. The way his hands go repaired is by replacing them with pair of stone gauntlets. Also the most interesting part is that in the setting dragons are extinct and my Character was tasked as a warden and keeper of a gold dragon egg.

More important here is player boundaries... If what their character does is so fucked up you can't say in a YT question, then a LOT of players aren't going to be comfortable with the topic... Odds are the player isn't gonna be super respectful with it either

You can use racism as a really good world builder. A tiefling is in long robes going through a market full of elves, trying to blend in. They pick up an apple and immediately are asked "are you going to pay for that?" While getting glares around them. You, the player, are new and have 0 clue how or why they are treated that way, and it adds depth to a different world

Actual "Race"-ism can be justified. Orc, Elves, Gnomes, whatever are actually different races. In the real world it doesn't matter if you're black, white, hispanic or whatever, we're all members of the Human Race.
@maxgriffin6963 ай бұрын
D&D "racism" isn't the same as ours. Our racism is bourne from ignorant and often incorrect understanding of one another, thus resulting in stereotypical ideology being our basis of knowledge and, ultimately, our bias against each other. D&D racism is the result of thousands of years of war, and very vast differences in ideology and tradition. Dwarves don't like Elves because Dwarves hate how Elves seem to take nothing seriously, don't apply themselves in any situation they don't care about, and if the mood strikes them, they abandon their loyalties on a whim. Elves don't like Orcs because they are a bunch of war hungry rapists that destroy everything they touch, and they are objectively ugly as sin. These things aren't misunderstandings, but are documented facts about the races, and the "Racism" experienced by the races is just groups of people who have little respect for other groups of people who differ from them on every fundamental level.

These are not the people to point out objective reality to. The kinds that complain or sit around debating racism just don't listen to things that don't appeal emotionally, and objective reality is usually only good for hurting emotions in that respect.

Imo, creating your own campaign by scartch or at least by getting inspiration from pre made campaigns is the way to go for someone who starts. That way the person won't get used to read too much and start feeling the ambience (easier if you created it) so that you passively learn the most important things to tell. Most pre made campaign in manuals is full of useless information. You can get the same feeling with a smaller description. That way, you also need less time for prep. Anyway, I agree with the session 0 suggestion, if only I knew it was not only about creating characters together XD
