The economic difference in Ireland is that the intensive farmer in Cork runs a high cost feed system on good land with a high production cow yielding 10000kgs per lactation and his stockmanship is top notch, on average its profitable but if his cow yielded 5000kgs @ a reduced milk price he is goosed,, in that scenario a grass based system with modest stocking rate would be better

I would like to question your personal expierence of dairy farming and cow type which I hugely question, the best Dairy farmers in Ireland are near Cork city achieving over 10000kgs of milk per 305 day lactation and succeding because they are top class nutritionalists and proven stockmen, their high input high output system still gains more milk solids per hectare than low input grass cows, Cross breeding only worked on the first cross, after that calf value became negative and cull cow was a giveaway price, as cross breedig progresses milk yield falls drastically as solids increase, put on your wellies it would open your eyes to reality
