Hi Sid glad the Larch fusion has recovered, very strange why parts turned brown. Strange I still get the noise, sound the life’s being sucked out if the video, or your by the sea and it’s the waves crashing against the shore, really odd, it doesn’t happen on any other video I watched not particularly bonsai any KZfaq video. Never mind I can follow what you are talking about most of the time my friend.

Sorry Joe. I'm not technically minded and don't know what the problem with my sound is or how to fix it. At least the Larch seems to have sorted itself out.

What is that CD there for?
@SidsTrees
@SidsTrees 3 күн бұрын
The Cd was placed above the trees' existing roots when it was quite small. As the trunk expanded the Cd cut into it causing new roots to form which then had to flow over the Cd creating a flat root base with radial roots. It doesn't always work. Sometimes, the Cd just breaks under the pressure. After, the original mass of root below can be cut away.

I'm so glad your second larch is recovering. Genetic diversity can be both intriguing and frustrating - especially in group plantings. Our ever-changing weather patterns seem to stress the trees and each responds differently. In my inexperienced hands, every year is a waiting game to see how each species and tree coped with unusual winters and springs.
@SidsTrees
@SidsTrees 6 күн бұрын
I guess that helps explain evolution Watching how a group of seedlings from the same parent, for example, come through winter (or not), it's fascinating and a little frustrating, isn't it?

Does it make it harder to bonsai a larch (and other conifers--I don't know)because they seem keen on growing up top and reaching for the sky?
@SidsTrees
@SidsTrees 6 күн бұрын
IMO, deciduous conifers are much easier to bonsai than, say pines, for example. All trees want to grow to the sky.

Really nice development Sid! I like the crown and branch movement. The leaf colour is indeed gorgeous! From what I gather from other bonsai artists, your observations are typical for atropurpureum-type Jap. maples. They grow more like single-flush trees. It may be a bit of a learning process wrt pruning, but the tree is already looking great. I'm interested to see the autumn colour.

Blimey Sid that Maple has come on in leaps and bounds, I love the leaf colour, the sound in this one Sid is a bit noisy my friend I thought it was my hearing aids but no, is it the Mike or something else, cooper and mate are having fun under your bench. All the best my friend.

I know your disappointment I had a maple purchased by my wife for a present. It arrived in a very poor state it supposedly had a five year warranty the supply told us to wait and see how it developed it they have now said it was not treated right. I have over forty Japanese maples and they are flourishing. Be careful of who you buy from.

@SidsTrees 13 күн бұрын
No, you misunderstood. I'm not disappointed. This is just a (mis)step on the way to becoming a bonsai. Not always a straight line.

I just love these, mine had a bit of an accident last storm... Lost the top, because another pot fell on it. Fell on the concrete floor of my balcony. The pot survived, somehow... Expensive pot, might have been the most expensive one in my collection of pots. So maybe the quality is exquisite? 😂 (on a budget here, so yeah, kind of a thing for me) Sadly I lost a year or 2 development because of this sudden storm (weather report said hard wind, but no storm). Ah well, part of the hobby, I guess. 😉 I did enjoy the flowers for a bit, like you. Really nice tree, Sid. Love it!

Haaahaa - like bonsai with toddlers! Parker knows you have a big soft spot for him - he's thinking of all the ways to keep you on your toes. Poor Cooper. I know that he's getting extra love, even if he doesn't see it that way. I love the broom-style idea for your magnolia. Should get the flowers up close for your nose to enjoy. I like leaving some branches to bloom. I figure its a great reward for all the work one does on their plants. Enjoy the journey!

Worse than toddlers! Parker can be in two places at once, I swear. Tell him off, and Cooper has to bark. I'm not sure if he's barking at me or Parker. It's like living in a very bad sitcom! Lol. I think broom style is the way to go with this one, though it's all for fun . Thanks Sue

Hi Sid unconventional species but why not hope you can get the flowers. Got your hands full with the puppy, not easy doing the video mate, not sure Coopers impressed with the little one. You think you have memory problems my friend compared to me your doing well my excuse is my age.

You're not wrong Joe. Sometimes I think that puppy can run in several directions at once. Cooper tries to keep up but just can't. He is definitely a little jealous I think.

I love that tree Sid you have shown it before as far as my memory serves, the leaves are really unusual and pretty if not a bit on the large side but you can forgive it for that, lets see what happens when the leaves reappear assuming they do, I would not be surprised if they came out as large as before. All the best my friend.

Oh, your Gingerbr4ead tree is looking awesome Sid! I love seeing that new spring foliage on too. They leaf out so early too - sometimes a bit too early. I've have a few of mine crisp their leaves with the brutal spring winds or late frost. They always grow back with a vengeance tho'. I've never tried full defoliation, but have had very good results with progressive partial defoliation. I gradually take out the largest leaves - especially on the interior, and just keep at it. BTW, I found that you can dry your prunings and enjoy an early hit of that lovely toffee fragrance!

I love this tree Sid. I think I mentioned that you inspired me to add one to my collection. This spring tragedy struck. It blew off my bench and snapped the main leader off. It’s alive but the new growth is very leggy and susceptible to scorch. Until it recovers I’ll be living vicariously through your beautiful specimen. Thanks, keep growing.

Heya man, great video, I am going to attempt to transplant a young sappling from my friends raised flower bed and try and continue it to a bonsai. I am not sure if you know but there is a process called (if I remember correctly) stratification, where you can put tree seeds into a zip lock bag with some damp material and put them either into the fridge or the freezer depending on species for a few months and then bring them out and I think once they thaw out it must activate something because the germinate almost straight away, me and my friend used to do it with oak trees but I am not sure if it works with ash.
@SidsTrees
@SidsTrees Ай бұрын
Yeah it will work with Ash and is good if you collect the seed in winter when it is dormant, but if you collect it in Autumn and it is fresh you will get even better results.

Nice tree the bald cypress Sid, not often used in bonsai not an easy tree to get the style right, it almost has to be wired cut and grow is not an option, it’s starting to fill out nicely and looks to be how they tend to grow in their natural state. Good one my friend.

That top is really starting to take shape. You sure must have a delicate touch to wire those soft branches. Can't tell you how many times I've snapped similar in my rush and clumsiness. Hope your tree grows really well this summer. I've never seen bald cypress in the wild, though we have some in our local parks. Really exotic looking.

Thanks, Sue. I snapped a few for sure. I've never seen a flat top bakd cypress, though they have a large specimen in a local Arboretum. It looks much like a regular Dawn Redwood tbh. We don't get many tornadoes in South West England! I've had to create this from watching others, especially John Geneagles channel.
