This was a terrific interview. I loved the candor -- and that it was long enough for a real conversation!

Thank you, thank you ,thank you. For this most intimate and personable of interviews on Iris Dement. I have loved her work since she came on the scene in the 90's . Her song "My Life" still touchs me everytime I hear it, I know she is a very private and shy person so the interview allowed us to see her in a new way. I wondered if she had stopped recording. Now I know there is more of her material out there to discover. Thank you for posting this and engaging with this beautiful and unique talent. Even though this interview is over a year old,Its like Iris connected with me again like an old friend Ihave not seen in a while. Thank You.

First off....great interview. I'm struggling with colon cancer and man I can relate with your emotions regarding "The Cannibal Within". I was able to speak to Danny in Austin before what was supposed to be my final chemo dose. Turned out to just be dose 6 of 12. I got to see him again last week and I get my 12th dose on Monday. Really enjoyed the first interview I've been able to focus on in close to a year.

"Corporate controlled media" is going to produce what sells, and they couldn't care less about the music. Her "protest music" has no audience. If it did, her records would be on a major label, at the top of the charts, and all over the radio, and Taylor Swift would be an also-ran.

What you seem unable to perceive, Iris (since you brought up Evangelicals), is that you are the other side of the coin of Evangelicalism. They are the thesis, you (and the many like you) are the antithesis. You hold all of these ill-defined opinions and worldview in reaction to the ridiculousness of modern Evangelical/Charismatic/Fundamentalist Christianity. You could examine your reactions more closely, or you could drink more alcohol. I'm guessing you'll just drink more alcohol.

She's not "country." She's "folk," the kind of folk admired by adjunct musicology/English Lit. professors at state universities.

Of course she didn't experience any pushback. She echos the sentiment of pretentious, musically illiterate, wine-quaffing, rich baby boomers.

Your music is a perverse caricature. You turn things that are innocent and beautiful, and put them in the voice of an alcoholic chain-smoking clown. What's left is all style, no Spirit.

Madi really continues to grow as an artist , History of a Feeling is such a strong album , was her most powerful record to date lyrically deeper than all the previous releases , her sense of melodies are intact as always but the songs really reach new heights . Sparser arrangements and self produced , it's clear that Madi knows her self best . A record so good that I didnt think it could be matched but with her new release Weird Faith she achieves just that , Madi certainly gets real and its the most affecting release of her remarkable career .

Wow she is way more lost soul than I thought, upon listening to this interview once again🤔😮🙄. Sadly,..her perspective on true Christianity is very distorted, and like so many people are ignorant to true Biblical doctrine. Jesus made it very clear in the Gospel of John 3:3 “it is impossible for man to see the kingdom of heaven unless he is born again”.

Carter Family wasn't doing protest songs. Johnny Cash sung in prison. Was that protesting justice? Protest music started when Cronkite brought Viet Nam into our living rooms. Woody and Dylan until he moved on. David Crosby was too stoned to matter. Just sing and strum your D-chords, Iris. and do include Jay Ungar when you can.

As soon as you said you were raised in California explained everything. Liberals see everything thru their eyes and everyone else is wrong. Sounds just like the other side doesn’t it. Therein lies the problem, no middle ground. The very media that your on is the problem, all social media, it just drives the divide. Liberals have as much responsibility for the chaos as anyone. The more you stir shit, the more it stinks.

Are you guys even aware of the fact that Jesus is coming back to take his church out 1Thessalonians 4:17-18 Those who are truly “born again”~ spiritually re birthed, the church is the “bride of Christ” and what is known as the rapture,{Harpazo} will be snatched away in the “rapture”the church is Christ taking out his church{bride}before the 7 year period of tribulation on the Earth were the antichrist will come to power,a super politician that’ll be a one world ruler.

Both of you need to become born again ,And the fact that you’re not is why you reason as you do especially about the words of God known as the Bible, the Holy Spirit will Guide you into the truth and knowledge of the gospel otherwise you’re gonna reason just like lefties do,that’s why the countries in a mess its in right now. John 3:3 In the words of Jesus “it is impossible for a man {and woman} to see the kingdom of heaven unless he is born again” when you become born again the Holy Spirit comes into your heart and guides you into the truth and knowledge of the Bible, and yes but the Holy Spirit is referred to as he,will give you ears to hear, and eyes To see, but you must come to him humbly and in a sincere manner and ask ,and believe as a child believes.

Do you know if you were to eliminate out all of the, but you know, and oh,and oh yeah, and all and I don’t know I think, and hoe hum,hoe hmmm and haw This interview would be narrowed down to about 10 minutes. I don’t see anything in this interview that has substance worth the waste of my time listening to,sorry but that’s my opinion,i certainly don’t mean to be rude,or impolite,I’ve always enjoyed and adored you (very sweet, and lovely) Iris, and your voice in singing with John prime and your songs in a living room Jam with other musicians, always a fan, very lovely,But I wish I didn’t know this political side, and most importantly I am saddened to know how distorted your view of Christianity, and your lack of understanding of true Biblical doctrine is,certainly lacking knowledge. My hope, and prayer is that you find The True Jesus of the Bible before it’s too late, and that you make him lord of your life. John3:3 Things of Eternal value will make more sense to you when you have the Holy Spirit that comes to reside in you when you become born again,Jesus sends you the comforter {Holy spirit}and will lead you into understanding of Biblical truths, and seals your soul for salvation until the day of redemption. When Jesus comes in the twinkling of an eye for his bride the church {truly born again believers} 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18

The fact is “normal ain’t coming back,Jesus is”. He comes as a thief in the night. Matthew 25:1-13Gods kingdom is like 10 young virgins who took oil lamps, and went forth to meet the bride and groom. 2)And five of them were wise, and five were foolish.. 3)They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: 4) but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. 5) while the bride groom tarried they all slumber and slept. 6) and at midnight there was a cry made, behold, the bride groom cometh; go ye out to meet him. 7)then all those virgins arose and trimmed their lamps. 8)And the foolish said unto the wise give us your oil: for our lamps are gone out. 9) but the wise answered, saying not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves. 10)And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came;and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut. 11) Afterward came also the other virgins saying,Lord,Lord open to us. 12)But he answered, and said, verily I say to you,I know you not. 13) Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the son of man cometh. The worst words to hear from Jesus on Judgment day “depart from me,i never knew you” John 3:3 is how we become know by him. Everyone born of a woman since the fall in the garden of Eden are born with the Adamic nature of our first parents, that has been past down through the generations,we must all become spiritual seed of Jesus. Before the fall in the garden Adam and Eve had a spiritual connection to God and walked next to God in the garden, until they sinned, that very day they died spiritually, and physical death followed not until hundreds of years later,Spiritually separated from God was immediate. Because God is holy they could not be in his presence until a redeemer Jesus could pay the blood sacrifice required to enable them to be in God’s presence again. Genesis 3:15 and I will put enmity between thee{Satan, spiritual seed of Satan, those born with the sinful Adamic nature} and the woman is {the “nation of Israel”whom out of the Jewish nation would come the redeemer Jesus} we must all become “born again”John 3:3 a spiritual rebirth is required to restore our spiritual connection to God through Jesus the Christ.
