My headcanon from years ago was i thought the island was a giant resort island. If you notice like every location seems like a tourist trap. There being more stores and factories than the permanent population can produce would make sense in that case. Kinda like Wuhu Island. I'm sure lore exists though that i dont know about.

huh... if games like cities skylines can simulate 30-40k population no problem, it is actually feasable to (if not utterly pointless) to make a GTA 5 sized game where every person is simulated with actual homes, jobs, daily ruitines etc.

Excellent work, I was always wondering the population of Los Santos and glad someone did this. And another gamer using a slightly different method also came up with 20,000. Yet… like you said that feels small, the entire town is at Arena Wars. So I remember hearing when Green Bay has a football game, the city is mostly desolate. I looked up photos of Green Bay and it gave a feel similar to Los Santos and it had a population of 100k. I looked at nearby Appleton at 50-70k and Wausau at 40k, and they felt small. I then looked at Syracuse NY and it’s downtown looked actually bigger albeit with shorter bldgs. (Imagining attack helicopters, rocket propelled motorbikes and people parachuting from a hyper jet on the verge of exploding was slightly unnerving), at 150k, it felt slightly too large. So 100k feels right. So where are the folks. There are many mixed use bldgs, meaning both commercial and residential. If you look at the central LS Customs, there are floors above the auto shop in real world has Someone living there. Also I looked at the Maze Bank and most of its lights are on, so people working there gotta come from somewhere. I read in National Geographic or the movie Skyscraper or both that have mixed use office bldgs that people also live in, so Maybe. The actual US Bank bldg has 73 floors and 1.4 million sq ft so someone can work those numbers.

the map is really only about the size of a smallish US town... the "towns" in the game are really just like neighborhoods
