I'm surprised to see so many comments being made about the mayday call. The question was why call a mayday when you're a paraglider? The video shows a group of people out to have a flight together. How is it the assumption was that the emergency call went to some atc instead of to his friends? Seemed obvious.

I understand your frustration, struggling to takeoff in the heat. Glad you were able to make it. Your not alone happens to me all the time, usually after three or four times I will give up, though being so far from home I would have kept trying. Plowing through the grass on takeoff looked absolutely brutal!

Running into that grass and not knowing if there were holes in your way must have been stressful. Did you have to radio the tower for landing?

Yep we radioed in both ways. The grass was deeper than i thought however the airport manager said he was going to get it mowed for us.

After watching dozens of paraglider videos, it appears that odds are in the pilots favor when flying in very low wind conditions, very low turbulence, and at flying sites with less-demanding geography/terrain including 'friendly' launch and landing areas. Outside of that small window, accidents become common.
@Para_Ninja4 ай бұрын
Its true that with paragliders taking collapses is not all that uncommon and generally PG pilots seem to be made of stronger stuff than us paramotor pilots and don't see it as nearly a big deal however we have alot higher wing loading with our extra weight on the wings so generally (and I may be wrong here) our collapses are a bit more violent and also perhaps we have more things for lines to get caught on such as prop, motor, cage etc. Mainly its just not something we encounter regularly so its more scary when it happens. In 2 years ive only had it happen twice. The thing is and this video shows that generally the wing just pops straight back out and you may only lose 20-50ft depending on the severity. Quite honestly i am really glad for the experience in the video above as it gave me alot more confidence the next time it happens.
@jlvandat694 ай бұрын
@@Para_Ninja I am not an expert in paragliders or paramotors, but if I were try flying them I would be extremely careful about choosing conditions, i.e., completely avoid windy/turbulent days where there's a chance of a collapse at low altitude. This would mean "just saying no" on many days and waiting for very safe conditions. From what I have seen, "just saying no" is extremely difficult for pilots of most aircraft, and the internet is packed with examples where a simple "no" would have meant the pilot remained healthy and the family non-grieving. Good luck, and safe flying!

@@jlvandat69 cheers and absolutely agree.. the most interesting part of the above video is how quick conditions changed in just a few minutes. Forward launching like that only happens in very calm light winds and you can see just a minute or two later the weather changed so quick and there was a section I didn't include which was me suddenly fighting against the turbulent bumpy wind right before the collapse. You can even see my friend was about to launch forward which shows even in the time he set up his wing it was very calm and then seconds later is very windy and rough. The whole just say no thing is very real. There is a thing most of us do (I did once years ago) where you have to go down to the field on a perfect day and set everything up which takes a bit of time and then at the last second you pack up and go home.. its actually a great psychological trick as you will forever be ok with saying no to bad conditions from then. All the best to you, its a great sport, you should join us :)
@jlvandat694 ай бұрын
@Para_Ninja your attitude is a breathe of fresh air. I have seen so many situations where the pilot had made lengthy plans go flying, arrived at the site and noticed warning signs about the conditions. The better the pilot, the better they can detect red flags, and alter plans accordingly. Most pilots have limited skills in this regard, making flying one of the most demanding sports I know of. The cost of misjudged conditions can be fatal. The weather is a complex, dynamic challenge few can master. I have seen situations similar to what you describe, where conditions changed from 'okay' to dangerous in a matter of minutes. Such scenarios can be difficult to foresee, but not impossible. Always helps if you regularly fly with others that includes a very experienced pilot. Multiple eyes = better chances you will foresee imminent trouble with weather, e.g. the good news is that pilots who are constantly vigilant and place safely above ego can be rewarded with (IMO) some of the most rewarding experiences a human can have. But this group does not have many members. Stay vigilant, never get complacent and achieve your dreams!

Nice place to land. You sure that wasnt on purpose? Your fly buddy just about ate shit and became a statistic. Thanks for the vid!
@Para_Ninja4 ай бұрын
I was actually aiming for the field just before the one I eventually went into. The thing I learned from this situation (apart to not f&*k with my engine) is that there might be a ton of outs (LZs) where you can land but most of them suck for for a bunch of reasons.. if you look in the video most of those fields have small trees which would have ripped my wing, all the big open work yards have security dogs and chain fences around them, then there's private property where the owner might call the police or some bs. In short i got lucky on that spot I landed because just about everywhere else sure I could have landed fine but it would have been a bunch of headaches from there.

Thanks. Thats a good question. It turns out it was some kind of old science experiment area. Those little plastic objects which look like upturned lawn chairs were part of it and actually had little electronic sensors in them which crumpled like they must have been at least 10 years old. So its a bit of a mystery why, hopefully the government didn't use that remote spot to test bioweapons and study its effects :)

I fly paraglidera in thermal conditions in mountains. It is funny how you go like "I took a collapse!!!" On landing. While flying thermals it is everyday business(almost). I definitely understand this one was acary though...,you were low!!
@Para_Ninja5 ай бұрын
Hahah I know, the paragliders among us say were big pussies about collapses in fact I keep this in mind whenever it gets rough. Its possible because of our extra motor weight the drop when we get a collapse is a bit more extreme. Overall I am really grateful this happened as its made me much more confident the next time i get a collapse that everything will be fine and the wing will pop out quite quick.
