Never seen anyone wait so long to retract the gear in a twin. Gear should come up immediately after a positive rate of climb is established. The no more usable runway thing is for single engine aircraft.

Don’t keep the props full on landing. If you have to do a go around you’ll exceed the 5 min limitation.

How can the student possibly land a plane by himself? He is being micromanaged and has no idea what to do until he hears an instruction from the CFI.

This gave me so much information. I only had two lessons and had to change CFI's because he was always late and the second lesson gave me so much anxiety because he was over half an hour late and i felt unprepared and rushed due his next lesson 20 mins before the end of my hour. Moving to an aero club closer to home but where it's a private club and the instructors all get high appraisal. Third lesson overall tomorrow and first with my new instructor :) Wish me luck

I am currently a student pilot myself at the moment. I love how you set up your camera. Just perfect! The best of all the videos I have seen on youtube. I am having a hard time making consistent good landings at the moment and by watching your video, I picked up a lot of tips (when to reduce RPM, best airspeed on base, and finally best airspeed just before the round out. Very nice landings there. Thank you for mounting your camera this way and for posting your videos for us to see. I learned a lot.

From all the comments below I feel like I was blessed with a great primary instructor - a young kid right out of Embry Riddle who had patience, a calm and calming demeanor, Brian Longen, who was a fantastic instructor. My recurrent instructor is every bit as good, Dustin Showalter! I'm very lucky and wish all new pilot wannabees could be as fortunate. When I started IFR training I already knew what a good instructor is and how they should conduct themselves so when I got a complete jerk of an instructor for IFR I fired him after 1 lesson and found a good one. I never did finish IFR but I'm not dead yet so maybe it's still a possibility.

Do you still teach? I live here in Federal Way and fly sims but want to try it for real. Pretty sure I can't get a license for medical reasons, but no reason why I couldn't do some lessons. Do you have a website where we could sign up?

I was just talking to the pilot the other day and we were joking about how lucky he got. He had lots of bad landings after those lol. Are you using power on landing ? I find that 1200 rpm or so really helps make landings better. Power off landings should actually be taught after power on but 90% of instructors teach power off ( and they don’t really know why … its just the way they were taught). Also don’t try to land try to burn off all the airspeed right above the ground while keeping your front tire slightly higher than your rear. For me i try to touch the cowling to the last 1/3rd of the runway and just wait for it to set down as I continue to build back pressure ( its just like take off for sight picture ) Good luck ! It will just “happen” and after you get it you wont remember why it was so hard lol

Just tried these the other day. So it doesn't look like he wasn't pulling back on the stick at all but just turning and using power to keep level. I was actually feeling a little G force as I was trying and actually I had to stop after a few minutes because I was getting a little nauseas. Have you seen that before in a student? The bank just seemed too far for me and I was actually leaning in the opposite direction of my turns. My instructor was mentioning power but I am not sure if he was saying to power before the maneuver or during it. Once I started feeling queasy we knocked it off and headed back to the airport. I have 4 hours of flying time in so I am hoping I can get better and not get that feeling again.

@NEROAviation 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah totally normal and don’t practice them over and over … usually i don’t do more than one or two and usually just one. So for entry your banking which will cause a loss of lift so to keep the altitude and airspeed you need to bump in about 200 rpms . If you don’t add a little power your going to lose one or the other and the basis of the maneuver is keeping airspeed and altitude. The reason we aren’t fighting the yoke is that we added about two rolls of trim in. As you roll in bump in a little power then drop your hand to the trim and roll in one roll downward as you hit 30* of bank and another roll to 3/4 of a roll to lock in the horizon as you hit 45 degrees bank. Trim for steep turn is not all that important for a 172 but it helps. Trim starts to matter as you upgrade to larger more complex aircraft though. Try chewing peppermint gum. Don’t over do it at first on maneuvers. Also make sure to have a little something to eat (granola bar and a little water or something). Also if you got really nauseous get a garden trash bag for your flight kit don’t mess around with those little tiny bags. My worst day flying I took a multivitamin on and empty stomach as I ran out the door and forgot my breakfast … steep turns about killed me . If it gets worse you can take motion sickness pills but really if you did more than one steep turn that was probably the real reason at low hours you have tunnel vision and they are disorienting for even accomplished pilots sometimes. Have fun & fly more !

This can't be lesson one in the actual aircraft unless you have already spent a good bit of time with the student in a simulator. Lesson one should not have any landings in it until finished. Lesson one should be up at altitude showing primary controls and secondary controls. You should practice flying a fake patter up at altitude so they know what to expect once you come back to land. Helping them to understand the controls and how pitch and power are related is the first thing that should be taught. Showing them how to properly trim the aircraft and fly with just three fingers. Landings can come easy once a student knows how to set the power and work the controls. It appears this student has already had some training.

Thanks ! He struggled later don’t worry lots of bad landings in later lessons lol. Landings are harder when you try to land. The Cessna 172 should get half the credit for most landings anyway ( the good half at that). Thanks for watching! Stay light on the controls and as you flare keep building back pressure until it looks like takeoff ... maybe a 1/4 or less of the runway will be visible over the cowling. As you build back pressure you also have to build right rudder pressure to keep the nose straight. Also don’t “ try to land” just burn off the airspeed just above the ground until it sets down gently. Now forget all that ...fly more and have fun !

“ Stop the wheels” he is referring to them spinning after lift off and he is tapping the breaks to stop them from spinning. They can cause damage over time. The airframe is the stop for the gear up and depending on adjustment it can be a wear point .
