Cool video and thanks for sharing the experience. You mentioned you had a year-long break from wave surfing but continued to surfskate? Do you feel surfskating helped or developed bad habits that got in the way?
@MarktheLandlockedSurferКүн бұрын
I caught one of the best waves of my life and a few times that I thought I was going to lose it, it was the muscle memory of surfskate carving that helped me cut back down the face of the wave and stay in the zone. It isn't like it revolutionized my surfing, but it helped.

Hey Mark.. thanks for this. Started surf skate a few months back and just turned 45.. can I ask for some advice on knee pads, which ones are you using? They look slim line and less bulky..
@MarktheLandlockedSurfer2 күн бұрын
I think these ones were K2. They were slim but they could also shift when you slide and not actually protect your knees.
@johnarmstrong7501Күн бұрын
Thanks for the reply Mark and the honesty. I’m finding that knee pads are cumbersome and restrict movement.. probably more for when I can actually skate and do some tricks in the bowl… 😅

I love how you went from "I'm 8hrs away from the ocean so I need to surfskate to get that surf feeling" to "I'm going on a trip to the ocean I still need to find the best skate spots to be able to release a nice video part", this video feels like you're not that landlocked anymore, just enjoying your skate journey to the fullest and to those like me who got to skateboarding and surfskating from surf and end up, for various reasons, to skate far far more than surf, it sends really positive vibe. You also feel a more positive vibe about finding remote spots our even sharing one with skaters rather than how crowded surf line ups end up to be, with lot of tension, localism and you sometimes just get 2 or 3 good runs in a surf sesh while surfskate often feels like you can go on forever. Sometimes I'm like "I'd really miss surfing and I'd like to take a nice trip" and then I see videos of the crowded spots and I'm more like "No I'm good at my local skateparks and bowls, I'll go surfing when I'll go surfing"

Thanks for this really well thought out comment! The beauty of this trip is that I still managed to surf every morning! Then when my arms were dead, "let's go find some skate spots!" Surfskating started as a substitute for my passion and ended up as a whole new passion. It is great to have multiple things that can bring you this much stoke!

I was really confident droping-in on four foot, so i thought i could move to 6 foot something. Although i was a bit scared i thought i could do it...I landed right on my face and broke out my teeth. I guess i looked to much down, because it wasn't an issue of commitment ;).

i have zero empathy for people who cannot handle negative criticism. People just don't want to accept that not all they do is amazing, so they get butthurt if someone doesn't say "you are great" and act like "i don't listen to those people". That always reminds me of Gorden Ramsay calling out people for being in denial and people just not wanting to see it. Personally i see just this big market of people trying to rip of newbies with they surfskate classes. Its a big epidemic and no one tells the newbies they are beeing ripped off because "keep your negative criticism for yourself". I think if you do surf skate because you just like to to it, the feels and stuff - ok. But get rid of that surf training illusion, fuck classes, fuck posers.

Hi, I know this is an older video so the bus rules might have changed, but were you walking from the hotel out to the road with your boards and then taking long boards on the bus? I'm wondering if that is a possibility.
@MarktheLandlockedSurferАй бұрын
We didn't try. On a quieter time of day they may have allowed it but the bus can get crowded and it definitely wouldnt work when full.

I got surfskates because, as someone who has surfed for 40 years, and taught snowboarding for a while, too, I have found most skateboards and longboards to be disappointing. I like having the ability to flow, turn hard, and gain speed from it. I do think there's way too much talk about which truck systems feel exactly like a surfboard. What surfboard? Every surfboard I've ever ridden, from vintage longboards to sub-5 foot boards made for acid dropping into river waves, feels different. Every run of the mill 6' something tri-fin has felt different. So don't overdo the "surf training" thing. Just enjoy surfskates for what they are. They will let you use your surfing and snowboarding flow, whereas doing flip tricks on popsicle stick skateboards won't. Enjoy that as a different sport if you like doing it, but recognize that skateboarding departed from its surfing roots 30 years ago and never looked back. Where it used to be an offshoot of surfing, it stands alone now as an Olympic sport. Surfskates are a deliberate effort to go back to those surfing roots, for those of us who want that feel when we screw around on the driveway, or even in the skate park. Still, a surfskate does have its own characteristics. Feel free to ride what you like, without worrying if it's exactly like a surfboard. That's really not a thing. 🙂

Hi Mark, had you got a chance to test in park or flat the 70mm 81a ? If they give a small additional speed without being too slidy, they could be a good choice.
@MarktheLandlockedSurferАй бұрын
Yes, my favourite are the 84a, but the 81 are a nice in-between
@MrConfoАй бұрын
@@MarktheLandlockedSurfer With 70mm 84a, can you still pump hard on a very smooth Park surface without sliding ? EDIT : I've received today 70mm 81a and 84a, i will test them soon in park + pumptrack. First approach is 84a on Soulboardiy Meda Revolution 34, 81a on Kahuna 48 (both Carver CX trucks). If i feel the rear too slidy with 84, i'll mix 84 in front + 81 on rear. I'll keep in touch.

Legasee pump a lot better, more like a surfskate. You can pump these similar to Ace Af-1 but it doesn't feel as much like a surfskate.
