I’m just learning myself but if you’re having trouble with the shrimp dying I’d bet your biofilm hasn’t established enough yet. Your tanks look super clean compared to mine. Mine look like it’s got pond water in it currently, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.
@Toolman833 ай бұрын
Yea their cycled pretty good problem I had was I started off with tap water bc my tap water is pretty soft it’s actually soft enough but it’s not consistent enough for the shrimp I’ve been doing small water changes with ro water and switching to shrimp mineralizer. I actually pulled my crystal reds out of their tank completely drained it changed to bio substrate and re acclimated them now they seem pretty happy
@Toolman833 ай бұрын
These tanks have been running for a little over a month now with shrimp in them and like a week now half set up before I got them I think the main problem was ph swings I think I got a handle on them now I probably lost ten shrimp out of 70 in a month as a first timer lol but I gained more then that back with my snow ball shrimp have had like three set of babies so far which is weird in the same set same water as the rest so idk
@jamesgarner59463 ай бұрын
@@Toolman83 I get it, my tap is pure pure water but at a ph of 6.2-6.8. 0 everything else but rather acidic. So far the plants and fish seem to be raising the ph. I’ve not done anything to adjust the ph and after a month in the tank with fish and plants no water changing, the ph went from 6.2 to more like 6.8 or 7. I’ve found my set up does better without water changes. Just don’t over feed and no need to vacuum. My one tank took almost 2 months to cycle but this 20 long just did it in like 3 weeks. 7 platy and 10 plants got it 0 ammonia 0 nitrites 0 nitrates.
@jamesgarner59463 ай бұрын
@@Toolman83 I took cheap old ghost shrimp and put them in a new tank. I can’t get an accurate count because of the Java moss but yesterday I counted 5 berried shrimp. That tanks maybe a month old as well. I haven’t even checked the water lol
@jamesgarner59463 ай бұрын
@@Toolman83 I know the tendency is to try to keep it crystal clear, but my fish and shrimp all seem MUCH happier with the filth. My one tank, the only 20 high I got, you can’t see past maybe 3 inches into it lol looks like a cow pond water but the fish all are super active, no red gills and seem happy happy.

I can not use a fuse block, I am running electric fans that draw 40 amps, those fuse blocks are rated at 30 amp per circuit and 100 amp total. But would work for my electric water pump (10 amps) and msd (7.5 amps) but fans have to be separate with inline 40 amp fuses and 10 gauge wire.
@Toolman833 ай бұрын
I’m about to wire my fans I believe mine were wired off a relay before but their only 80w each
@Toolman833 ай бұрын
And this is especially true if your using a controller to kick them off n on bc that’s when they draw peak amps when they kick on but also sounds like you have some monster fans lol

But this also is not gonna be a permanent thing right here for these tanks as I’ve built and see things that I should’ve did differently when I build out the other side of the basement, I’m gonna do things differently. I agree with painting the tanks but more to help keep the reflection down.

Those Piranhas wont live long.. artificial plants, wrong substrate, tank will be too small in a few weeks. my mother bred piranhas, and thats not the way piranhas should be kept.
@Toolman833 ай бұрын
That’s funny I’ve kept piranhas my whole life never had a problem. Also they’re in a 75 gallon right now. They’ll be good for at least 10 months to a year.
@Toolman833 ай бұрын
The artificial plant was something I had and I threw it in there just to give them something to hide behind when they were tiny tiny and I figure they’ll be all right in that tank for right around a year until I can get them something bigger. The red gravel was supposed to be like a pepper of red, but for some reason it came out predominantly red but as far as the fish go, they’re pretty happy there’s not so much as a nipped fin on these fish
