I was 11. Lots of very mellow songs then. Hard rock with Led Zeppelin and others did get started then, after Cream became popular, with Black Sabbath as the darkest.

Israel smashes the Arabs in 6 day war. Montreal's Expo '67 is one of the most successful world's fairs ever. Three U.S. astronauts - Gus Grissom, Edward White and Roger Chaffee die when their Apollo spacecraft burns in a simulated launch. Thurgood Marshall becomes the first black U.S. Supreme Court Justice. H. Rap Brown cries, "Burn this town" while in Maryland. Apparently, people were listening as racial riots in Detroit end the summer of love in violence; 43 are killed, 1700 stores are destroyed as federal troops are used to stop the mayhem. Riots in Newark, NJ kill 26 and injure more than 1,500. Race riots in 125 other cities, incuding Detroil where 43 died, indicate the level of discontent. Tidbits Amana introduces the first compact microwave oven for home use. The Radar-Range sells for $495. Jann Wenner borrows $7,500 to begin publication of Rolling Stone Magazine U. S. population is now at 200 million. The "experts" predict that it will reach 300 million by the year 2000. Once again, the experts were wrong. Rock music becomes the counter-culture seal of approval as psychedelia hits and San Francisco becomes the focal point of the new rock era with groups such as the Jefferson Airplane, Big Brother & The Holding Company and The Grateful Dead enter into the mainstream. The Summer Of Love kicks off with the first rock festival at Monterey, California featuring explosive performances by The Who, Otis Redding and the American debut of the Jimi Hendrix Experience. About a dozen of those I've never heard of before, a number of them, I never heard of until about 35 years ago! I was 10 in `67 and had about 300 records, by then. I'm up to over 62,000, now.

I wonder if this was a British compilation. There was a song by Lulu I hadn't heard, and she was always more successful in the UK than in the US. And there was a succession of female artists, new to me, that I'll have to investigate.
