My nan & grandad lived at 166, the end house of the group. My every weekend was spent there as I grew up, 'til they were moved on to a high rise near Bow Flyover. I was 14 at that time, as I recall, born '54 so that would've been '68 ish when the terrace was demolished. Nan & me mum were on good terms with Vi, the mother & I well remember how my heart would sink if they got chattin' with her 'cos they'd go on for what seemed like bleedin' hours whilst I sat at the kerb digging at ants with an old lolly stick or the like to pass the time. One such time, about age ten, I was kicking an old, threadbare, tennis ball against Vi's wall when Reg came out the door & tried to dribble the thing off of me....he succeeded but I stamped on one of his super shinny winkle-pickers by accident & he gave me a clip round the ear....nothing nasty, more in fun really but me mum didn't half give him a roasting! "Oy, oy...keep yer bleedin hands to yerself you big lump a lard...or else" Vi was a sweetie...she'd often call us kids in to the house & give us bread & jam slices with sugar sprinkled all over. Both me grandad & me dad did odd jobs for the twins...don't think they ever got money for that, very little if any at all but being in their favour was kinda worth a whole lot more...& when I say odd jobs that would be nothing naughty. Despite the reputation from afar, some most certainly well earned, the boys were the local social services & police rolled into one for us locals, they were always known/seen to be fair. So if you behaved reasonably in the community then you were treated fairly in return...step outa line tho' & you could be in deep shit! Guess many would be shocked at the rough justice at play but it bloody well worked & the area was super safe for the women & kids back then, the old/sick/infirm treated like royalty. Example...my family frequented the Barley Mow pub down the road a bit, as did the Kray family/friends at times & as 166, being the end terrace, had a fair bit of garden compared to the others so the pub would more often than not turn out to then turn up at nan/grandads....blokes filing down Vallance Rd with wooden crates of Manns brown ale, boxes of Babycham , Warninks Advocaat & the like! One such evening one of the party go'ers was an uncle Benny (as a kid everyone was an aunt/uncle tho' few actually were) The fella was well pissed & stank of booze when he came into the wee bedroom upstairs where I'd been sent to keep away from the craziness. He tried it on with me but lucky for me he was too pissed & I managed to get away to run downstairs to my mum/nan....who of course went straight to my dad/grandad who in turn went to report `elsewhere`. I remember standing in the hallway as uncle Benny was politely escorted out the door & sent packing...no big scene whatsoever....and I also remember sitting on the stairs, listening to me mum/nan chattin in the kitchen a few days later, as to how Benny had been found that morning round the back of Fingalbaum's Fish & Chips in Bethnal Green Rd, castrated & bleeding to death...rushed off to Mile End Hospital but died en route.

This is one of the best accounts I've ever read of that area and those times. Thank you for sharing all those memories and I'm sure many others will read and appreciate your stories. I love all the small detail. It took me back to my childhood when you talk about prodding the ants with an old lolly stick. You always had to watch out for thos eants when you were sat on the footpath wearing short trousers. I'm sure you could write a good book filled with your adventures growing up and coming across the different characters. A world now disappeared,

Thank you very much for taking the time to post your comment and also the other one on the footage from 1984. You really have made my day as I have been a bit despondent thinking people aren't really interested in what I am doing. Your words have helped and given me fresh impetus to carry on. I am really pleased that you enjoyed watching. 🙏

Thanks very much for watching Imtiaz. I couldn't really comment on how you found it. It was 40 years since I was last there and I don't really remember anything in that regard. I hope you can watch some of the others in the series. It will not be the usual touristy stuff but more flavours of Paris.

Holland has a similar mount called "Pyramid of Austerlitz" near the city of Utrecht. It was built in 1804 in only 27 days by Marmont's boys.

It does as though it was a great atmosphere there in its heyday and people only have good things to say of Ted & Sue. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I hope the film revived some happy memories for you.
