Sad normally you would say a life well lived in this case it's a life stolen from this horse.

0:20 The horse had access to a rather lush pasture. Horses lose conditioning for more than one reason. Having dealt with geriatric animals, it can be very challenging to get and keep weight on. Even humans tend to eat less as they age and get bony. The horse's hooves were not in bad condition. She is quite old. It hurts to see. Hopefully they can find a feed regime that is palatable and nourishing to this old lady.

My mother went through this with two horses but she was the owner. Very irresponsible and stuck up woman so she just kept denying anything was wrong, saying they were just old. We convinced her to give the horses to a farm and the woman that came to pick them up LOST IT on my mom. Swearing, insults shaming. I didn't know but they hadn't seen a farrier in 2 years. They were middle aged and just horrible health. We though she'd learn from that but she got a mule and donkey and did the same thing again after I moved away.

Hey it's okay to ride older horses , you did the right thing to have the vet check him first , not all older horses want to retire :-)

If you boost her electrolytes she might be motivated to drink more. Have you tried chaffe hay? My elderly boys were able to eat it when they could no longer eat hay, and both were on soaked alfalfa pellets in addition to their Senior. But I'm sure you've done everything appropriate for her.

I so wanted to see you give her some water and maybe a little food before she got on the trailer... But for sure some water or electrolyte water

Arabians are closer to dogs, behavior-wise. They need more interaction. And yes they are discerning.

What are you feeding him? I started my aging mare (28 yrs old) on beet pulp pellets, (no molasses), soaked in hot water and she rounded out very nicely, with no issues of metabolic syndrome. Is that some of what you did for him? He's quite stunning now!
@rhfarmstablesКүн бұрын
Sentinel Performance and alfalfa pellets, heavily soaked.

Horse can not collect with its head in the air and you should sit back when you stop to get the weight off the front end.. and yes she used the reins when she asked for a stop.. put your pockets in the saddle and your legs forward when asking for a stop!
