This is one of my favorite Dire Straits songs. I prefer the studio versions to the live or the live Alchemy album versions. Mark likes to ad lib and go off on tangents when playing live. Most people prefer his live stuff but I like to be able to sing and follow along and it’s impossible with Mark.

In 79, I used to listen to this song while cruising with my girlfriend. Then it was off to the army and leaving my childhood behind. Everytime I hear it, those memories come back and for a brief moment, I'm young again.

Believe it or not this is the first time I've heard this song. This album was played at every house party I've ever been to in the 70s. So I'm on the same level as you guys. Kansas Styx Yes Rush and many more tried the progressive side of Rock

Hey first time listeners do you guys. What a great reaction to a song that I grew up with. Styx opened for Kansas and the next day he wrote that song. I raise my glass you are really in tune

This is from the first album I ever bought as a kid. I literally bought it for “Best Friend” and because my sisters wouldn’t let me listen to theirs. They thought I was crazy for my purchase because they already had it. I wore out side one TWICE before wanting more and turned the album over to hear side two. WOW, side TWO!!!

Good insight. I feel that Rick left the song to be up to the listener to come up with their own theory. The whole album is just SO GREAT!

Exactly. Killing in the name of a god (no matter what religion) has been used to justify wars and genocides throughout history.

The first 5 Kansas albums are all fantastic, and I would find enough reasons for each of them to call it the best. But I always thought that "Point of Know Return" was the most mature of them, an album on which "Dust in the Wind", in my opinion, is the weakest song. Enough said.

As a CANADIAN High school student back in the 80s, I put the needle to the vinyl. I was a fan. This is only ONE of their best of all time tunes. I am so happy that people are discovering this.

This song is flawless, a work of genius. There are at least four great songs on that album, really really great, and Carry On...is not one of those four. I am sick of it being overplayed for more than forty years. Steve Walsh sings this so beautifully, and Kerry and Rich's guitars are sublime.

11:45 The meaning of IGY is that more happens in Europe than in the US. Some things have already happened. "Undersea rails" are also real, as demonstrated by the Eurotunnel between France and the UK. "In 90 minutes from New York to Paris" refers to the Concorde. The Concorde was lost due to its price and the loss of customers who worked in the World Trade Center. Now, the world economy is rising (more in Europe), and we have more money. The governments now know better how to govern effectively (in Europe). These are all improvements by scientists. You just have to vote for politicians who adopt these improvements. Just have to grab the apple! 16:00 Regarding the free sale of weapons, shootings occur all over the world, even in places where weapons are not freely available. However, it is evident that in places where you can freely buy weapons, it is not safe enough to walk the streets with dignity. Science can evaluate relationships. If one does not accept this, then no one Swinging On A Star. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d9RzpL2Jza24nWQ.html ... Greetings from Portugal

Without an appreciation of existentialism, the song might feel bombastic. It really is quite simple, yet the celebratory factor of choosing to overcome the subjective obstacles to change is central to much of the best music of the 70s. The time was a time of lost souls choosing acceptance of what we think obstructs us. "They" were in the way, and ran the show. Spiritual quests lost their meaning. "Those were few who saw it through."
