Probably the same leader who told his troops "Keep your helmet on, so it keep the heat on your head and it wont cool off." Yes. I have heard this from a DI no less. The fucking guy was creating heat casualties in training. No benefits for those leaders

One subtle detail I noticed early on is no sense of grandeur from a Silver Star medal. It’s the superiors who find out about it and he simply confirms he won it. An attitude So far removed from our current egoistic state.

Damn right. This person did his job and came home, and also helped others get home. Bravo!! This is all war comes down to: Getting back home! Iraq vet here, and it was true for us over there. This kind of stuff never changes. Damn the medals, and a bigger damn the big picture, the mission, a big-wigs speech, and every asshole out there who never had to stand post anywhere.

Bottomline: go to the gym regularly and build up your stamina and strength because there will be that moment when it will come down to stabbing, kicking, wrestling, strangling, and slashing to survive. Scary the way he narrated it, and all too real.

been there done that 1st Air Can 69/70. RPG's were a fright but mortars when caught without a hole to hide make the buttons on your sweat soaked garb seem an inch thick.

Who benefited from this war? Why were we there? What was the actual outcome? The same questions apply to our Middle east engagements. Our troops and resources are too precious to be squandered by poor leadership.

Left the Corps in 76, was “thanked” for my service for the first time in 2006, with the notable exception of my sister. My father enlisted in ‘47, retired in 73. Don’t think anyone ever thanked him, but I don’t imagine any vet does it for the thank yous. Just the same, you’re welcome, people.

All LBJs fault. The whole crapfest falls solely on that jerk from Texas. He orchestrated the Gulf of Tonkn, our response and then gave the Pentagon everything they wanted except the ability to win at all costs. Had the US miilitary been allowed to fight to win, we would have defeated North Vietnam eventually. You know why? Because we never lost a battle over there, only the entire war. Why am I so angry about it? Because I personally knew the father of a young man killed in LBJs stupid war, and it wrecked him, plus the thousands of others killed and maimed, that's why.
