Who is the camera designed for? Is it a point and shoot? Yes, it seems to have everything needed for that. Is it for advanced users? Hardly! Nice to have a camera that has auto focus, but the possibility of manual focusing or at least pre focusing is important, e.g. when shooting with long exposures. If you have B shutter speed but can't prefocus?! Doesn't make sense. I think the camera fails for advanced photography if it is not possible to focus manually.

I had almost all the Leicas M models including the digital ones except M11 ….. and still i miss the R8.
@naaldvoerder23 күн бұрын
In my opinion the R8 was a bit of a failure . 6 years earlier Contax released the RTS III, that can do all the R8 does, has a built in motor drive, a high eye point, 100% viewfinder, a built in flash meter, a film flat sucker, and looks rather pretty, instead of rather ugly. It ended up being dubbed “the black diamond”. Rather more flattering than “the hunchback”.

Holding that chord for the entire length of the soundtrack was… well it was so obnoxious that I couldn’t watch all the way to the end of the video. And I used to own the Konica RF.

Nikon is essentially committing suicide by their asinine illogical business practices, not only by discontinuing the best film cameras, but the weird direction Nikon is taking in the digital realm. Seriously ... it just seems like each and every business decision which Nikon has made over the last 15 years or so is specifically designed to put themselves very much OUT of business, or at least be the very LAST choice among the big three - Fuji, Canon ... and now last place Nikon. In recent years, Nikon has specialized in creating JUNK.

I recently acquired an R8 in very good condition (refurbished) and I am quite surprised at how capable it is. I was worried that it would feel too big and heavy mainly because of reviews like yours that make that claim. This is actually smaller and lighter than my Nikon F4 and really not significantly different in size from my Contax RX or Canon T-90. I find the ergonomics much better than expected which mitigates the size and weight substantially for me. Definitely better overall than my R7, SL2 or SL. I was honestly getting to the point of selling off all of my R gear when I picked this up, now I am not. Not a moment too soon as I really like the R glass rendering. Maybe I should encourage anyone who reports on the R8 to drive its popularity down so I can still afford a 2nd R8 body!

I have a magic combo that I've been using for quite a few years now. Nikon F6 on matrix-meter setting, 2.8 or better Nikkor glass, and Provia 100f. While it is true that the film choice doesn't work in every setting, from a roll of 36 I can usually get 3-4 images that just blow-away any digital attempt. I'm quite happy with that ratio. The reject images only demonstrate that I haven't mastered it yet.

I wish them luck, it's a pass for me. I know this has a better spec sheet than the Pentax 17, but the user experience of that camera is fantastic. Great grip, a well-designed and placed viewfinder (directly over lens center line minimizes f'ups with parallax), the winder is excellent, a great middle ground between hands-on and automatic for a casual camera. Sometimes I want to shoot seriously, bring a tripod and shoot medium format and meter properly, sometimes I just want something small, light, and to just go. This Rollei 35af seems like an awkward box that's harder to hold and handle, and I just don't trust MiNT. I couldn't stand using the MiNT/Rollei TL70, that had an absolutely absurd exposure system, wild vignetting at all apertures due to a sloppy aperture plate system, a pitiful focus wheel, and I got worse results with it than a basic Instax Mini. The viewfinder on the TL70 was good, but shooting that camera in practice was a rotten time and the camera purchase I regret most. But this is a big swing, and I respect the hustle, and wish MiNT luck. I hope it turns out well for them and anyone buying the camera.

Really Fun overview, I had never heard of the Yasuhara camera! It's very interesting to see that 8 was the highest rating in the useability category. I'd be really interested to see if you've changed your mind, or have found any other cameras that rank higher on the purely useability area! Just based on features, I would think the Ikon ZM would get an extra point up to 9 since it has the Aperture Priority that the MP lacks, as well as much easier film loading and unloading. But then again the MP is certainty smoother, and more satisfying to actually want to hold up and make a picture, so maybe it evens out.
