Yes wear underwear under your kilt. I always wear underwear and then a pair of swim trunks so I have pockets for my wallet and any change I have or may get back when buying something at the Scottish Games or Celtic Festival.

What would an American style kilt pin look like ? An M1 Gerand or AR-15. Maybe an SM6 or AIM-120 missile?😂

My first Scottish ancestor of Clan Lamott came to the colonies in 1749 and fought against the British in the American Revolution. When I made my first visit to Scotland back in 1975, I was wearing a kilt and no one I ever met gave me a hard time about wearing a kilt. I visit often now to be with my Scottish relatives. The only "complaint" I have gotten was from one elderly Scot in a pub in Dunoon because I was wearing a utilikilt.

I think it takes a certain demeanour and upkeep to look sexy in a tartan suit. I will agree that the photo of Lance for that product page is incredibly sexy (I say in the straightest way possible). I don't think just anyone could pull it off though. I'd probably default to an Argyll jacket and waistcoat.

😂As part of the heritage that is construed as magic, there was a substance used by the Filid to determine truth in settling disputes, it was called a 'Druids Egg' (Glain Adder). A process used to make it was to collect Adder spunk during the spring mating season. So as not to get bitten, a method was to have placed a greased stump taller than the snake could reach in a mossy clearing and descend from a tree by rope,or sometimes, just hang from the rope and use a skin cloak to drag over the snakes as they gathered enmass to breed, and then escape through the trees with the cloak. This is the basis for what is known as 'Fairy Circles'. BTW Fayrie means 'People from the Island, like where the Tuatye came from and returned to, when they could no longer tolerate their misbehaved cousins, the Ionian Mylesians. Some stayed behind to bedevil the Milesians, but the rest took their snakes and went back to 'The Northern Island' (no St. Patty involved!').

Erik's outfit in this episode has inspired an outfit of my own. My kilt is a MacLeod of Harris, and I have a grey sweater vest with a green collar area, as well as a grey paisley tie. Looking good, Mr. Munnrson!

FYI, talking about hiking socks (at about 38:00), I have these wool blend ones called "combat boot length". They come up almost as high on the calf as kilt hose, but without the folding over ability. I can't remember the brand name (I believe it starts with an I, but not sure), but they for sure come in black and OD green at least, because I have pairs in both of these colours. I would assume they also come in some sort of tan/khaki/brown colour for the military folks. I found my first pair at Sports Authority, but have since bought all of my subsequent pairs from Amazon. They run about $16 USD per pair.

Thinking about doing a kilted Yugi Muto cosplay... American Heritage tartan with a navy Kenmore doublet over a tank top? Of course, there's also the matter of the Millennium Puzzle, bracelets, collar, and wig.

I've designed a very basic tartan for my surname that combines my Anglo-Saxon paternal family with my Scottish maternal family by taking my mother's tartan and changing a couple of thin lines to borrow colours from my father's ancestors' family crest. I wish I had the financial means to order a kilt in that tartan. I even went through all the ones listed for wool kilts on your website to make sure it was distinct lol.

I'd love to get a nice, 100% wool kilt for formal occasions. However, with my current budget, I can hardly afford a semi-trad. Currently, I only own my acrylic starter kilt, but I'm planning to get at least a PV after I get a kilt jacket and waistcoat (most likely Braemar), and possibly some Endrick ghillie brogues. Might save up a bit to do the Glenfinnan model instead.

I have a couple of Cold Steel Sgian Dubh that I use, the Culloden and the Mini Culloden. They look like a traditional SD, but are made with modern materials. Very useable. They're long discontinued, but you can still pick them up on the secondary market. Additionally, I tend to carry a SAK Pioneer X in my sporran.

EDC, I carry a Kershaw assisted opening folder (I have a half dozen of these, in slightly different blade lengths, that I rotate through). I usually clip it to my hip strap on the kilt, with the knife on the inside of the strap to help conceal it a little. A Kel-Tec P380 in a pocket holster in the sporran. I also have at least one spare magazine in with it. I'd rather carry my Taurus G3C in 9mm or my Makarov PM in 9x18mm, but I have yet to figure out a concealed carry method for the kilt. Down here in Florida, it's too hot to wear a jacket or even a waistcoat 90 percent of the time. My thighs are too thick for a thigh holster, and the "thunderwear" type would have way too much hardware right in front of my junk (pistol + sporran). If anyone out there has discovered a practical solution to carrying a decent sized compact pistol while kilted, please let me know! Other EDC stuff: just the usual, phone, keys, cash clip with ID, CWL, debit card. I also carry a 1928 Irish Free State silver coin that has a face value of 2 shillings and 6 pence in my sporran. I'm more Irish than Scottish, so the Irish coin speaks to me.

My family comes from Armagh county at least two generations anyway but our name is not listed in that county. Do you know if there is a county with the name McGaughey? I looked at a few counties but didn't come up with anything. Thank you for your help.

Just because a name isn't listed with a certain Irish county doesn't mean that there weren't members of that family that lived there. If you know what county your family is from, then go with that

The West Virginia Wild and Wonderful Celtic Fest & Highland Games held in Beverly West Virginia (only a few miles from Elkins) just completed it's second annual event. I did not attend the first, but I was told that this past event nearly doubled the original. Judging by the crowd, the events, and the musical acts (Ally the Piper was one) next year should be even more successful.

My ancestors were victims of the clearances. They made their way and ended up settling in the mountains of western NC because they said the land there reminded them of home. All these years later, we're still stuck in America. Not one family member has ever made it home to Scotland 😢

Should point out to the beginner the kilt is just the start of the cost. You add the sporran and chain, kilt hose, shoes and all the knives and a top and it can spiral out of control.

I'm curious what the purpose of the heel cleat is on the Piper and Glenfinnan models is and why the Endricks lack them. Is the absence on the lattermost just to keep the cost down?

My highland wear dream is pragmatic and simple….and very unlikely to ever happen. I wish kilts where exempt from customs and taxes in Sweden. Wool clothes from the U.S…. or Scotland for that matter….it hits the wallet.

Hi, on a military kilt with the kilt pin being a sword, why is the pin always mounted with the sword point facing down in the Dead Sword position and not with the sword point pointing upwards, like you would hold your sword out of the scabbard, if you were an officer?

Being well-made is my highest priority in looking for a kilt. I only own one kilt at the moment, but I'm definitely buying my next one from you guys because you constantly demonstrate how knowledgeable and careful you are to make sure that every detail is as close to perfect as possible. Whenever I have the scratch for another kilt, I know where to look.

My first kilt/only kilt at time of typing: MacLeod of Harris. I thought I had some familial connection to that clan because my mum's maiden name is Harris. I didn't realise the "of" in the tartan registry meant landownership, meaning MacLeod who owned the Isle of Harris. Turns out we're actually descended from the *Herries sept of Clan Maxwell.

I think the word you're looking for instead of, "costumey," is GARB. Because a great kilt is garb. It's historically-based clothing that is functional. Costumes tend to be impractical and flimsy...temporary.

My dad has told this story since I was little, so I’m going to try and recite it the best I can. One night when my dad was about 8 or 9, he couldn’t sleep because it was storming. He went out of his room to spy on his sister who was playing with an Oujia Board with her friends. He doesn’t remember much about what it said, just that it was creepy. However, a few minutes or so after that, he goes to get water to go back to sleep, and hears this horrible, blood curdling crying coming from the window. He doesn’t like describing her, but says she was an old woman in a cloak outside their window crying and wailing. His sister and her friends didn’t see the old woman but they were so disturbed by her crying that they hid the board under her bed. For the next few weeks or so, the crying would happen without actually seeing the woman, until his Uncle got sick and died. Then he never heard it again. He doesn’t like talking about them, but says he thought he saw a banshee. His Grandfather was an immigrant from Ireland, but I’m not even sure that means anything. This is a story I’ve always found interesting, and even talking about Banshee’s creeps me out a little.
