I'm surprised that with modern precision computer controlled manufacturing techniques, that the skin panels aren't pre-punched via a CNC punch press or CNC drilling, and that the mating structural elements aren't also similarly pre-drilled when they are fabricated, leading to the elimination of hand drilling holes in the wing structures during assembly. With CNC precision manufacturing, I'd expect that the pre-drilled parts could simply be assembled with all holes already in the exact positions required.

You would think so, yeah. I'm sure some of it is. But in some cases there's enough tolerance stack and on some parts if they are getting bent or twisted at all (like wing skin sheets) the exact warp and stretch can vary slightly from part to part. May be enough that it isn't practical to do every hole until everything is actually aligned in the fixture. I know on thinner sheet metal wings, it can be very difficult to convert where the holes should be in 3D down to a flat 2D piece of sheet metal that is going to be bent to fit to an airfoil shape. On thin sheet the angle you drill at is a little less important but if you have thick skins and thick ribs, more of a challenge.

I think I am missing something here. Why don’t they drill the holes before constructing the whole wing? Why do they drill by hand with no guide to make sure it’s drilling perfectly perpendicular ? This seems to me a problem that doesn’t need to be optimized in the first place.

No , cz make prehole before assembly is more hard to work with, due to precise issue, cz sometime, we deal with mis aligment hole between 2 part, that why we assembly first then riveting, cz more easier..

What about the thousand gallons of fuel that those wing carries, I dint see any tanks, pumps, lines, returns lines, vents lines, just a well constructed efficient wing.... Nice but it's so obvious that the biggest lie is the one in plane site. Those wings are constructed to be efficient, to make and hold the plane in the air, but to hold fuel. We are been decieve about the real truth about how and what type of fuel the planes are using.... It's called compress air turbines, that the real truth..... Hace a nice day and God bless you all.

Seeing all those beefy I-beam stringers (?) really helps me to understand how the top and bottom surfaces can handle the incredible compression and tension forces they do (worry so much about the wings being strong enough during airliner flights that I'm now a little obsessed with wings).

@rcairflr 5 жыл бұрын
The manufacturers do extensive loads testing on the wings to make sure they don't break. For anyone not involved in aircraft developement, you would be surprised at the amount of testing that is done on aircraft before they ever go into production. Manufacturers spend billions to test aircraft .

It may look time consuming and expensive. But I'm sure it saves more time rather than replacing misdrilled parts and the cost of replacing them as well. As a sheet metal specialist time is nothing you want to keep track of. Just do the job deliberately and slowly. Drilled right the first time every time.

Pre-drilling doesn't take into account the position of the matching holes in the other structure's. e.g... setting the pre-drilled metal over the other existing holes on the mating piece may not line up because of various precision variants.

Match drilling is the only way known to man that can produce accurate alignment. Usually they use fixtures to precisely locate a few reference holes and then match drill/fasten the rest.
