Thank you for the insights! Love to know more about PACU nursing as I’m moving to PACU soon from an ortho/trauma unit and I did gen-surg before too

Thank you 🙏! I would say I like it, not love! Being in the pool for an extended time once, I did end up scraping the bottom of my toes 🤣! Maybe I just have sensitive feet, idk.. but I’m super aware of it now, so I’m very cautious on the feet.

Yea I'd think it would be the same for any unit that is on the critical side. People say icu and er needs med surg first but there are many new grads in all areas.

Love your video! I’m currently a nursing student and my goal is to work in the OR but the PACU is an interest of mine as well. They’re currently hiring patient care techs to work in the PACU at the hospital where I work. Do you think it would be beneficial for me to work in the PACU as a tech before graduating next spring and do you think it will increase my chances of landing a job in the OR or the PACU after graduation?
@PrillyWalfordBSNRN2 жыл бұрын
First of all, congrats on your soon graduation!! That's a big deal 😀! I would definitely recommend taking the job as a tech. Depending on how flexible your hospital is, you just might land a job there when you graduate.

I’ve only been a med surg nurse for 1 year and I’m looking for something different, possibly a Fellowship PACU program. Any advice?
@PrillyWalfordBSNRN2 жыл бұрын
It can be very difficult! It’s all about finding a hospital that is willing to train. If you could somehow get into the ER or ICU for at least one year; then it would be easy to get into the PACU.

I think I’m obsessed with u. Ur accent. All of it. I’m a nurse. Bsn. And I worked in the ER for a year. Bc of having kids I did outpatient for years. I am not a mother/ baby nurse and not really liking it. I keep thinking I want to do like 1 day a week in the Er and 2 days in the pacu. Or something like that. I’m wondering how long it takes to pick up pacu and feel confident. What is ur nurse to pt ratio in the pacu? What part of Cali are u in? I jus got my Cali nurse license a couple years ago. Also what hospital do u work at? Are they hiring? And does ur hospital recover ICU pts? Thanks. If my questions are too personal. Can we talk another way? Through email, WhatsApp, text, etc? Thanks

Thanks so much for your kind words. And congratulations on your accomplishments. I've been an ER nurse for many years and recently started in PACU so I'm very confident but always opened to learning new things.I would say after 3 months you should be very comfortable in the PACU.I'm in Northern California. There is a shortage in pretty much all of the hospitals right now so it's a good time to start sending out your applications or even get the help of a nursing staffing agency. Best wishes.

For someone interested in dabbling in critical care (my background is med-surg), how much of an element of critical care is there in PACU? My hospital is a trauma one center if that helps.
@PrillyWalfordBSNRN3 жыл бұрын
So many answers to this question depending on your hospital. If your hospital’s PACU recovers ICU patients, then you will be doing critical care all the time. Some hospitals do not recover ICUs in the PACU, they go directly to ICU. You will also have the cases where your patient decompensates in the PACU and requires a bed in the ICU. You’ll continue your care until a bed becomes available. If your unit does not recover it’s ICUs then on the daily you will rarely do anything related to “critical care”. Hope that made sense.

HELLO!!! what are the typical PACU interview questions? I'm currently a new grad in the ICU and would love to know more about PACU and how you would respond to airway or other post-anesthesia emergencies?
@PrillyWalfordBSNRN3 жыл бұрын
Usually airway compromise in the PACU is usually a result of anesthesia. The main fix is usually jaw thrust, OPA/NPA or Narcan. If that’s not the issue then you would follow basic ACLS protocols. As far as interview questions, there is a plethora that comes up with a google search. They are all pretty standard.
