Used your recommended settings for street work with the Q3 and I am super impressed and grateful for the results. I used a Q exclusively for nearly 4 years of shooting (have been a photographer for over 55 years) and it was my fist Leica. Lot's of impressive performance but terrible autofocus particularly when so much better tech was available for rent even from Leica's digital partner, Panasonic. The Q3 is miles better than the Q in may ways. Had high expectations for autofocus improvements but with the settings I was using before your suggestions I was seeing at best a 20% improvement. I do a lot of shooting from the hip. The settings you recommended are stellar. Thank you so much.

Where does this idea come from that film cameras or old lenses are blurry and washed out? I have family photos from around 1900. They are tack sharp.

Not really about sharpness, old uncoated lenses definitely have a look to them. Especially when it comes to reflections and highlights

The first photo of the dread person is a smoking frame imo . The zoned out expression is so real. I love the lady at the bottom left edge peaking in and the one in the back right kind of entering the frame. It feels very balanced and real. Those are my favourite kind of street photos, far more than any juxtapositions or anything!

I don't know why so many people call this the perfect street camera. I miss shots all the time because of slow response after auto power off. If I disable auto power off then the battery life is total shit. Never miss a shot with Contax T2/G2
@luciengraetzАй бұрын
Yeah fair, but I don’t seem to have this problem. I do have a spare battery tho. I keep the camera on then just press the shutter as soon as I see an image occurring to make sure the camera’s on. I find two batteries will last me a whole day of pretty rigorous shooting, and coming from shooting film just carrying one little extra battery doesn’t bother me either. I also shot a G2 for about a decade, love that camera but it’s nowhere near as fast as a Q3. Completely different ball park

Yeah not really possible to mimic a filter exactly, and I prefer it this way, for me the less post processing the better! Each to their own tho. I’m in Japan right now and just shot another ep with the glimmer glass. Got a photo that I think perfectly explains why I prefer the filter over an edit. Hopefully you enjoy it when i upload 👌

Isn’t it a bit off to surreptitiously take photos of people, where you don’t dare look them in the eye and be honest about what you’re doing?
@luciengraetz2 ай бұрын
Nope! And who said I never look people in the eyes? I engage when I want/need to. 99% of people would prefer you’re invisible anyway, and it gets better results, the aim is to capture candid moments without bruising the scene. When I do a street portraiture I’ll talk to the person. Street is completely different tho. Study Vivian Maier or any historically significant street photographer. Enjoy your day.

Turn off EVF and LCD, set focus to manual and set the lens to 10ft. Set aperture to f8. Shoot everything that comes to within 8ft of you and it will be in focus. If you know the lens' field of view well, you will know roughly what is in the frame.

It's so bizarre to me that people complain about Q autofocus. I picked up a first gen Q recently and typically shoot manual. Started shooting family stuff with AF to test it... Totally fine! Its so reliable that I put together a user profile to switch from zone/range focus over to AF so i can grab isolation shots stopped down at random. People have gone from spoiled to dependent it seems. Same thing happened when I picked up an A7Rii a couple years back. Totally fine too.

Wild. I've never seen street shot with these kind of settings. I can't picture it working for how I shoot, so I'm gonna try it out around NYC tomorrow. Never know what will inspire a new way of thinking on the street. Personally I have two profiles and I keep them pinned to the function button for hot swapping. One with iso auto + minimum 1/500 shutter + spot/af-s. Jump into that one and click to AF in one motion to isolate with low aperture. Thumb wheel can leverage iso to tweak exposure. Very cheaty stuff. 99% of the time I'm in the other profile.. just manual everything. Sunny 16 + zone/range focus. Perfect set up, just like the old masters but with the bonus of being able "swap rolls" to faster film when i wander into one of those quintessential patch of city shadows. Pin AE-L to the back button to at least make exposure a touch more reliable at times tho. Anyway. Nice work on your ig 🤌🤌

I’d like to try your settings out as well. Do you have more info on the other settings you apply such as file type, profile, etc… Thank you
@SourPlanet3 ай бұрын
@@BeKi-gs1wx I don't do anything fancy. I love the default color of the Q116, so I leave it alone. JPG+DNG, and often set the JPG to b&w so I can get graphical compositions easier (raw can be color if needed). Otherwise.. just auto ISO (no minimum) and auto shutter (set to minimum 1/500 via auto ISO). Aperture on the lens. Then I use the wheel to adjust exposure compensation on the fly. I set to wide zone autofocus but I shoot in manual all the time. Occasionally, I'll drop to F1.7 and click into Autofocus for an isolated portrait. 99% of the time, I use zone focus. F5.6 or F8, keep the focus zone at 2m (4ft to near infinity in focus) or hyperfocal- as though it's a "zoom lens" for focal depths. I find this is the best way to work as I'm in NYC and I either want stuff on my side of the street (2m center zone) or across the avenue/down the block (near infinity to hyperfocal). Hope that all makes sense! I keep it very simple, as I like the camera to be pretty transparent in the experience.

My settings are a little different. It would be interesting to try it. When you darken the rear screen doesn't it limit you? Do you usually only use the viewfinder? And what about 7 frames per second - doesn't that make you take too many unnecessary pictures? Thank you and Merry Christmas.
@luciengraetz7 ай бұрын
Coming from shooting film, there’s no such thing as unnecessary pictures on digital! Especially shooting street, you never know exactly when the magic will happen, so why not over-shoot and increase your chances? I barely ever look at the screen or through the viewfinder anyway so my “stealth mode” has no downsides for me. Unless it’s something very specific I’m after then I can either use the evf or quickly switch it back to use the screen. I’ve been shooting 28mm for over a decade so have a decent idea of what I’m going to get, the rest is up the universe. Thanks again for another great question! Merry Christmas!
