It's hard to comprehend, at least for me, how much work went on behind the scenes to give the owners' their preferred lifestyle. Filling and draining the pool probably took forever for a quick swim. It's the same -- but smaller summer "house" scale -- for Boldt Castle in Alexandria Bay, NY. But Biltmore is quite the place to visit, and everyone should make it once. We enjoyed shopping and dining onsite, too, when we were there during the holidays and for the wedding of one of my wife's co-workers.

You're right, all that work over all those years to build. I just can't imagine having all of that space! I feel like I would totally get lost if left to wander on my own. I image it must be the best place in the world to have a wedding though!!!

That place is insane, had no idea so many people visited every year. I would guess with what 1.7 million visitors a year (?) they are making enough to maintain the property. I was planning to tour it when I lived in the Carolinas but never made, glad you did and shared it.

The architecture is a crazy mix of new and old, the arcade is really cool. I’ve driven through Asheville but I’ve never stopped and guess we should sometime. It seems to be a hotbed for artists which is cool, the arts are overlooked and undervalued in most places these days. The Kiss and Evil Knivel pinball machines are definitely a blast from the past, I’ve played them both like 30 years ago, maybe longer. Haha. ( bad news bears, sponsored by chicos bail bonds. )

We've had several great meals at Carmel's, where you're standing at the end, but you picked probably the best-known, most-popular place to eat. Tupelo Honey is a great place. And around the corner is Chocolate Fetish, whose truffles are amazing. I especially like the Dragon Sigh, which is dark chocolate with some wasabi. I was a member of a fishing club in Asheville for a couple years, and I'd always stop when I was in town for a meeting and bring some home for my wife. Asheville has many hidden gems. Thanks for the fun stroll down memory lane. Buttermaker!
