The Odyessy had the best marketing team, or whoever make the box art for the games. I remember as a kid seeing the box art for Quest for the Rings and wanting so bad, even before I saw the actual game.

What's interesting regarding using the MT-32/CM-32L/CM-64/CM-300 was some games (such as Gradius II: Gofer's Ambition) would actually have both FM and LA synthesis at the same time. So if you just used the MT-32 for music, you would be without a good few music channels. Also, some games such as Akumajou Dracula X68k also programmed custom patches for the MT-32 and related LA synthesizers.

The Ataris had better colour, the Spectrum had a faster CPU but if you just even look at the C64 demoscene stuff coming out still in 2024 it's clear itwas the best 8-bit all rounder.

The blue disks are not "later releases" but special releases mainly meant for competitions and uploading your scores to kiosks for chance to win prizes. Yellow disks were very much the standard and were not replaced by blue disks, they just coexisted for special versions

The adult titles were not officially licensed by nintendo. They are much more related to disk system piracy as unlicensed games and dumps and other info on the games identify them as such.

I was only 6 in 1988 when my father showed me how to load games on our C64. I didn't pay much attention to anything else (I was only 6!) I have been interested in revisiting the platform a little more seriously lately and this is definitely going to help in getting a decent setup. I am really interested in building one maybe even cannibalize a mostly dead one.

I have 3 questions for you: 1 - The plastic wrap in which were packed your unit was original o was repacked? 2 - You modified original hardware (the unit and the disk) for creating this video? That would be such a crime. (Even less orignal units from the 80's still alive). 3 - I have a Unit i bought some years ago from Japan and it looks brand new, but how could i know if it is a first edition or have implemented the later copyright protection? (without opening it).

Awesome video - a great follow up to your previous one. Those vending machines to re-write the discs were genius - economical for the consumer whilst still bringing in the money for Nintendo. I didn't know too much about the disc system at all and didn't realise it was packed with all the extra upgrades. You made a solid choice on picking your unit up 👍😉 (ps great job on mcGuvyering that typewriter disc!)

I own 2 of these bad boys... a rev-5 model and a rev 0 (no copy protection). I use a FDS stick to copy my floppies and a PC using a special usb adapter. The FDS stick only has 256 MB of memory but can get most of the library on there. The famicom was light years ahead of what Atari was doing at the time. Amazing what a 1.79mhz CPU, extra memory, good talented programmers can do. The 3d Logo printing was a very very cool idea. Trying to find real disks are getting expensive.

I don't think I'd buy anything to be honest. Between my Evercade with SD flash cart, Spectrum Next, and A500 mini I can pretty much play anything I want. I'm just not into the whole collecting and buying sub-culture. To be honest I think a lot of men that I see buying this stuff have become "addicted to shopping". It's kind of like the old stereotype that women like to shop! , I'm seeing it more with men these days and I actually think it's kind of mentally unhealthy. It's facinating that many men have become addicted to the experience of shopping, the hunt for a bargain, the fascination with the "price" of a game at resale, than actually playing and enjoying the games themselves. There's this sort of fetishization of the packaging itself, a mass market item, that astounds me. For myself I just don't want the clutter (and I'm sure my family doesn't want to deal with that after I'm gone), and my enjoyment of retro games is in playing the games themselves, not it fetishing the box or packaging or caring about the resale price of games or systems. I can't justify buying all this stuff especially if you're only interested in actually playing the games rather than storing a pretty box that nobody I know in real life would even care about or be impressed by. I'm just almost entirely practical about my game and system purchases rather than ornamental; am I actually going to use this to play games on? That's how I tend to look at it. I'd end up visiting Akihibara; looking at everything, then going home and either buying a cheap evercade compilation cart, a cheap indie steam or itch.io game for my PC for a few bucks, or break out an emulator. I don't see any value in supporting the 2nd hand market like this; it doesn't help fund developers or anything like that it just funds redundant resellers and flippers. I'd rather throw $5 towards some small indie developer for their new game on itch than support the flippers on the 2nd hand game market that don't provide any new value.

So with the disk nintendo embossing, if you remove the front of the drive, does that remover the security lock out on the disks?
@retrobitstv
@retrobitstv 24 күн бұрын
It is possible to unscrew the Nintendo embossing from the inside of the faceplate but I think it plays a role in aligning the disk in the drive and I didn't test to see what would happen with it removed. I guess it wouldn't hurt to try with the power disconnected...
