Here's a thing though: the moment the Nerd Rage triggered, you should have started shooting. Outside of VATS. And again after popping that Jet. That's what the slowed time is best for. The Assaultron is limited to melee until its laser is fully charged, you have the advantage until then and you would have enough time to destroy it. Also, drink some damn water.

This is why I've never used VATS for random encounters... when you really, really need it, you're out of AP from running away, so I just tweaked the hfil out my weapons and perks so I could just turn anything nasty into confetti with overwhelming firepower... I always keep an automatic shotgun with explosive perk on my character for this exact scenario, if she gets close enough you will take some damage blasting her, but she'll take a lot more getting there!

That's why I almost never take off my power suit and take good care of it. To conserve precious batteries, I walk the Commonwealth on foot and turn on running only in combat situations.
