I purchased Onix and received it a few days ago. I really like its airiness, transparency, softness, dreamlike expression and excellent dynamics. I was very impressed by the musicality of it. It was a fantastic experience! Still, there were times when I wanted to get a slightly sharper, crisper edge rather than a soft expression. However, I didn't want to go too far with digital sound, so after thinking about it, I thought DC04Pro would make a good duo with Onix, So I ordered it. Did I make the right choice? Anyway, your review is of great help and enjoyment to me. Thank you Andy!

I recently bought the Astell & Kern Kann Alpha and even though the sound is great the UI is just terrible. You can't find a more laggy experience than the Kann Alpha. Also the WiFi sucks. I can go on and on and on about problems with the player - it just sucks. It's no fun using it. It makes me so mad and sad since the player was a thousand dollars. Even dowloaded music lags using Tidal. Unacceptable! I will sell it. I ordered this FiiO M23 in stainless steel yesterday and I have high hopes for a more fun experience. Besides sound the overall experience has to be good in my opinion. Thanks for the review :)

I started in the hobby looooong before KZ. I started with Shure E2c and then E3c paired up with my Sharp MD5 minidisc player/recorder and iRiver IHP120 player/recorder. The IHP120 was amazingly full-featured for such an old DAP with line in/out, optical out, and the best remote I've ever seen for a DAP. KZ has come a long way. When I first tried then maybe 10 years ago, my eardrums felt like they were getting branded with hot irons from the overly sharpened treble. Now I've got a few pairs AS24, PR2, and Rhapsody. All are very respectable IEM, and the AS24 is super fun to play with!

@@donglemadness Ok, thank you very much! I hear that t10 (like pr2) benefits of a good power output becouse of his 96dB sensibility. You think I can hear a notorious difference from a powerful desktop dac amp?
@donglemadness
@donglemadness Сағат бұрын
Yes, if you push them with over 500mW or over 2VRMS, all planars tend to scale further, not necessarily desktop DAC/Amps, tons of 2-4 VRMS dongles can do that easily already. ODO is just 1 VRMS but for $5 there's no better option at that price point. You want to max it out, go for something like EPZ TP50 or ONIX Alpha and use the 4.4mm BAL side

Okay I don't understand how the faceplate itself can change the sound as it's coming out of the meat of the IEM. Unless there's some kind of resonance chamber in the faceplate that adjusts the frequency and sound waves, it's just a faceplate, I guess I'm thick headed; I don't know . You need more subs Andy. Its a crying shame your not at 100k or more

Hey Andy i have a budget of 250 dollars and I am confused between dongle dac and dap. For dap I have selected Hiby R4 and for dongle dac Onix Alpha XI1 I just want best sound quality and i've no requirement for extra features just purely based on sound which one should i go for. Just to clarify i am not only asking this for these 2 products in general should i go for dongle or dap. Still waiting for review of Chord mojo 2, IFI gryphon and if possible Chord hugo 2. Love your content as always
@donglemadness

Thanks. R4 is a DAP and ONIX Alpha is a dongle. They serve different needs but sound wise I only know of ONIX Alpha as I haven't tried R4 yet. There will be no review from me on Mojo 2, Gryphon or Hugo 2 unfortunately just to set the expectations right, they have been around for years and without a doubt solid products in their own ways. As far as sound are concerned, ONIX Alpha is one of the best anyone can hope for

Thanks! One silly query: high gain and lower volume (say 30steps) or low gain and higher volume (50 steps) ? Are there any differences as in does high gain likely to make the soundscape better?
@donglemadness
@donglemadness Сағат бұрын
That depends on what IEMs or headphones you driving, it varies from one to another. Like the EA1000 or CCA Hydro both runs smoother with Low gain because they are very efficient, some need more power from High Gain, there's no fixed set, you need to experiment how they react and each IEMs can react differently, use the settings that serve your purpose, the ones that sound the best to your own ears (only you can determine that)

ONIX is a dongle, DX180 is a full-fledged DAP, serves two different needs. Both amazing with sound. It's not about which one is better than the other. Understand your needs and preferences then you know which one to go for. For myself I use DX180 most of the time because I love the All-In solution that allow my phone to work separately. So I think I got one of the first of the second revision, I can confirm it was noticeably warm, even on the brighter nozzles, though there is still planar brightness in it. But on the warmest nozzle planar timbre is almost eliminated and it is VERY warm, too much for me. But still it sounds great, I actually liked it more because it was not S12-like, which I think the 1st revision ones are. That's no excuse though, stealth revisions in chi-fi have been a problem for a while, companies have to be transparent about it, call it a variant model with an amended name and be honest instead of banking on old reviews.

If I recall correctly, BASN has a background in stage monitor IEMs, offering relatively low-priced alternative to customs. It makes sense they focus on long-term comfort and low weight. The only that that put me off the brand was questionable tuning, not that balanced, but if they can tune better I will definitely put this on my radar.
