Great video thanks for sharing. Video quality was very good too. It was very helpful to watch this as we have a huge piece of gumtree trunk left to buck, and we should be able to do it.

This is the the first stage of processing a downed tree, once you cut your rounds, you split them into burnable pieces with a splitter or maul

I use the type of wedges you're using too; but not very often. I MUCH prefer the diamond wedges.

Twisting the axe at 5:14 is a very stupid thing to do. I stopped watching after that.

Would've been alot easier to just move the wood splitter over there and turn it upwards

A log that huge to split is ...😮😅 Do the the sides first...😂❤ ...as you work towards the center of the log as it gets small in size.❤ The center of the huge log is the heart ❤️ of the tree trunk.

We work rounds that big and just roll them right to the splitter. Split and rotate. Backbreaking stuff but a bit faster. Maybe less fun

Great video. Just brought a full trailer and truck load of rounds similar in size to yours, and was struggling to split. Your video helped and now I realize I need splitting wedges...a lot of them...

I just cut up a hard maple that had fallen on them couples house one branch broke off The branch measured 4 ft across The base of the tree was 6 and 1/2 ft across standing at the highest point without that branch still was 110 ft tall they asked me to take it down and cut it up it took me a week of straight work to cut it down and cut it all up The saw that I was using was a steel 066 a Husqvarna 95 XP with a big bore kit with 105cc and a 3120 with a 6-ft bar with a big bore kit in it pushing 130cc then the maneuvers rounds around I used a metal hook that I would pound in to stand them up on edge and I took a 372 and ripped down to split them in half turn them on the flat side and ripped him again then ended up having to rip them again into eights to build a load them onto the truck I got my winter supply of wood for this winter and probably for next winter and ended up getting over four cord of wood out of that tree

You need to make yourself some wood wedges and use them after you get the split to start. I had 25 16'' pieces of hard maple that were 40'' to 60'' across. I never went straight to the heart first. I worked my way around the outside and then made triangle shapes.

Nice video. I never split that big of rounds. But for rounds of 20-24 inches I find splitting about 4 inches in a circle around the log works easier than splitting the whole log. Doing it your way does work. It just takes me longer.

At age 61 and a woman who splits her wood by hand for an outdoor furnace I have practical experience as well. I find working around the edge of large rounds much less labor intensive. Work smarter not harder. Going all the way across the diameter you will get longer sections of stringy wood that makea it hard to separate the two sides.

Nope to time consuming, take a 24 inch chainsaw cut an X in the top get a 10 lb sledgehammer 3, 8 inch wedges a few wacks and were done...makes for nice logs.

You are absolutely right. I used a Fiskar splitting maul . I can split a 24 round in about 2 minutes by working around the edge. I've tried all the other methods and nothing compares. I can out split anything except the wood processor and I'm 66.. The only reason to split differently would be to be able to move to a hydraulic splitter but I don't need one.

Cut some small noodles. Makes starting wedges easy. Try 2 wedges side by side once you get a good crack and use a digging iron to pry. This is the way I've been doing it for 50 yrs. I cant swing a maul or sledge over my head for near as long as i can strike with a 3 pounder.

My hats off to you. I'd just push that mess off a hillside, dust off my hands, and say good riddance. The effort required for cutting and splitting that is reminiscent of the huge gnarly things my father would acquire when I was the wood splitter. Lots of sledge hammer and wedge work. I found it was best done at Temps near 0 because of the way the wood got brittle then.

$250 worth of axes and wedges. Good chance for a costly Emergency Room visit. If all goes well it will take 24 work hours to split and stack all the wood from that tree. Is it worth it or are you better off pending you time working at McD?
