Amen to all of this. Had we known what an ACCS-type, Doug Wilsonish classical Christian education was, we never would have enrolled. In my opinion, many of them are pseudo-intellectual, far-right wing extreme, overtly-Calvinist, and most of the CCSs I've encountered have no clue who they are. They're trying to be a prep school, a homeschool, a classical Christian school, and a "normal" school at the same time. Thank you for being honest about how incoming parents are not always receiving the truth.

I remember when you hit the stage and I thought ‘oh my goodness, here is a precious child of God who sees through the lies’… the only people who promote racism are the ones who talk about color of skin. I’m so proud of you. I’m so proud of your staunch stance for the values that I hold from one convert to another… I came into the church in 2006 and I have a great story! Totally holy Spirit

Regarding the discussion about how to read scripture: We just finished watching the Moses 3-part dramatized documentary on Netflix and I found myself feeling simultaneously moved by that presentation of Exodus and guilty for needing that type of "low-brow" telling of the story. Now I feel better about it because Pageau gives permission for reading the bible like a story and finding meaning and ontological framing for life.

Ancient stories were distilled by divine souls gathered together in the dark around a bit of light and warmth. The Finnish Kalevala from the land of long nights perhaps is one of the highest distillation. It lives totally in the imaginary transforming vision, body and soul. The immaginario is reality.

Totally agree, I’m from a long line of atheists, literally going back generations here in the UK and I am some kind of atheist myself, but I am not a fool or at least not a complete fool, we do not live our lives through science, we live our lives through narratives. It is these narratives that give meaning to everything we do, not science. And meaning is real, it is not just a matter of opinion and it is contained and explicated in a truly remarkable way within these Christian narratives. As Jonathan often says they show how reality lays itself out and reveals itself to us. In my hardest moments, when I have struggled and struggled to do things that seem to be of no advantage to me, and indeed damaging to me, and yet seem to be the right thing to do, how can I account for the fact that I will take that damage unless there is something greater to live for than just myself.* Perhaps I have been mistaken, perhaps I am not an atheist after all. Why am I crying right now? * For the last 18 months I’ve been helping a vulnerable adult who has autism and learning disabilities and who has been dreadfully abused by a medical health professional and seven others. In the course of doing this, I’ve been attacked and vilified by people with far more power than me, I have had my career almost destroyed, I have lost my home. I am currently living in a caravan. I will not give up. One of those concerned is a mental health nurse and he is now facing a tribunal with the nursing and midwifery council in the UK. But my life seems to have been ruined by this, and yet when I find connection with others who support me and validate me, then all that sacrifice and suffering seems worthwhile and I am energised and enlivened. What a life this has been. This evening, I have had some support from a man called Paul, who runs Bradford city disability, football club, where my friend plays football. He said he is ‘just’ a football coach, but he is not. There is nothing ‘just’ about what he does. He is worth his weight in gold, because he builds community, and it is that community that enables people to survive the kinds of things that my friend has been through. And I made sure that he knew that he is some kind of angel. I am beginning to think that maybe I need God in my life, I keep getting the urge to pray. Suggest a prayer for me and I will make it.

A good short prayer that is easy to remember is a line from Psalm 50: "Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me." This is a mainstay of traditiona prayersl in Orthodoxy: "Glory to thee O God, Glory to Thee. O Heavenly King, O Comforter, the Spirit of Truth, who art everywhere present and fillest all things, the treasury of good things and the Giver of Life, come and abide in us, cleanse us from every stain, and save our souls O Good One. Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, Have mercy on us. Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, Have mercy on us. Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, Have mercy on us. Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen. O All-Holy Trinity, have mercy on us, O Lord, cleanse us from our sins O Master, pardon our transgressions, O Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities for Thy Name's sake Lord have mercy, Lord have mercy, Lord have mercy. Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen. Our Father Who art in Heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name Thy Kingdom come, Thy Will be done, On earth as it is in heaven Give us this day our daily bread And forgive us our trespasses As we forgive those who trespass against us And lead us not into temptation But deliver us from evil Through the prayers of our Holy Fathers, Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy on us. Amen. Lord have mercy (x12) Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen." I personally happen to love the Prayer of the Righteous Alfred, a Western Orthodox (pre-Schism) prayer written by King Alfred the Great who, while not canonised, is increasingly being venerated in private devotions: "O Lord God Almighty, Maker and Ruler of all creation, in the name of Thy mighty mercy, through the sign of the Holy Cross and the virginity of Holy Mary, the obedience of Holy Michael and the love and merits of all Thy Saints, I beseech Thee, guide me better than I have deserved of Thee; direct me according to Thy will and the needs of my soul better than I myself am able; strengthen my mind for Thy will and the needs of my soul; make me steadfast against the temptations of the devil; keep foul lust and all evil far from me; shield me from my enemies, seen and unseen; teach me to do Thy holy will, that I may inwardly love Thee above all things with clean thought and chaste body. For Thou art my Maker and my Redeemer, my life, my comfort, my trust and my hope. Praise and glory be to Thee now and forever and unto the endless ages. Amen." God bless you and may your prayers bring you hope, strength, and nearness to God.

@@ChristianTheChicken - thank you for your support, it has been important to me. An update, he was put in front of a tribunal by the nursing and midwifery Council, but the way it was done was an obvious stitch up. It was arranged so that my autistic friend would have no legal support and no one in the room would be known to her and that she would be cross examined by her alleged abuses solicitor. When I realised what was going on, I pulled the plug on the whole thing by telling my friend that she should have nothing to do with the tribunal because she should not lend it legitimacy, so she withdrew from it and when she did, he immediately admitted his guilt. Now, I am going to hold the people who set her up like this and who attacked me when I supported her to account, under the data protection act I have obtained documents that expose the appalling way she has been treated and are riddled with provable lies, misrepresentations, and serious breaches of their statutory obligations towards her.. This is a huge scandal, and I expect it to become national news and to bring Hackney local authority adult services down to its knees. This is going to happen very soon. I am no longer living in a caravan because I could not afford it but I’m still homeless and now I live in a tent. But nothing will stop me holding those to account who have so seriously abused her. Along the way certain things have happened that are remarkable coincidences and they have made it possible for us to prove our case beyond any doubt. I wonder if fate, or maybe God, is moving in this to help us. I do not know, and I do not need to know, I just need to try and be honest with myself and to try and do what is right regardless of the consequences to me. It was only when I realised that it did not matter whether I was happy or sad whether I live or die or indeed whether I win or lose, that I was able to shake off the depression and the anxiety and the paralysing mental pain, and move forward regardless of what has been thrown at me. I had a dream that a herd of angry bulls blocked my way, and then angels came and guided them out of the way, and a woman made of life took my hand and said to me as she led me along my path that the angels had cleared “and now you may find the world”, it took me a long time to understand this dream, and how to react to it, but the way to react was to understand I must let my anger go and allow higher powers to do their work. And it is only this that has enabled me to do what I have had to do. And I have knelt on occasions and said the Lord’s prayer, and it has helped to strengthen me and it has helped to show me the way. I do not know if I am a Christian, and I am not sure if it matters, I am just a small thing, I am very imperfect, and I will face whatever judgement comes my way.

I was thinking recently about how contemporary Christian music is quite possibly the worst genre of music ever produced by mankind. Even something like mumble rap, awful as it is, at least appeals to the passions of pride, greed and lust within us, and can be enjoyable as an authentic expression of our darkest impulses. But Christian music has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. It pleases neither God nor the demons. It invokes the same kind of feeling within me when I fake a smile or feign interest in someone's boring conversation. It's fake worship, fake praise, fake love for God. They know they're supposed to love God with all their heart, but like most of us sinners, they don't. Despite their insufficient love for God, the toxic and judgemental nature of many protestant churches compels them to convey fake zeal. That's why this genre is so empty abd void of any authentic expression.

@@crushinnihilism Wouldnt disagree, and yet to a great degree pop culture representations of wizards are unconsciously inspired by christianity. @@enzocompanbadillo5365 Odin in the Eddas is a wandering wizard with a wide brim hat. That image comes directly from the Eddas. The wandering psychopomp in grey appears in a lot of cultures. Its a Shamanic image. A lot of Christianity comes from paganism. Theres a good amount of Platonist metaphysics and Aristotle's Ethics in the writings of the Church Fathers. The symbolism associated withJesus looks suspiciously Dionysian. Christian Yoga is just Hindu Yoga with Christian symbols. Its a real shame that most Christians aren't more aware of where some of their religion takes inspiration from.

@@crushinnihilism Wouldnt disagree with most of your points, yet the mention of Christian yoga sounds odd since it is a rather modern practice. I am under the impression that you think I am defending christianity from an american evangelical protestant "christianity is pure and everything else is pagan and therefore diabolical" stance but I asure you I am not. However, Tokien was a catholic and there is undeniable influence from his religious beliefs in his work. I dont think Jonathan Pageu thinks his themes are 100 percent christian either however he does get late roman and medieval christian culture. St George slew a dragon after all.

Successful storytelling, especially for children, depends so much on delivery. A good storyteller brings enthusiasm and conviction, thereby invoking the divine inspiration the story already embodies. I disagree with Jonathan that Bible stories are inherently boring and would attest that they already hold within them a great deal of the mythical, fantastic elements and that is precisely why CS Lewis and Tolkien could draw upon them! David, a weak and overlooked boy, defeats Goliath with a stone and sling shot in one attempt! By faith! Jonah is swallowed by a whale! Noah builds a three story ark alone with only his sons’ help (the dimensions are written to give us an idea of this feat) and through the power of God all the animals board that ship and survive until the flood waters subside, and do not turn upon each other or Noah’s family when all reason would tell us impossibility would triumph! Eve is seduced by a talking snake! Joshua leads the Israelites and they topple the walls of Jericho with their trumpets and singing! No one can say there is no mythical, fantastic qualities living and breathing in the stories God has already given us. Perhaps what is lacking is inspired presentation and the willingness to marvel upon the written word. For all Pageau’s dissertation on the logos I’m surprised he missed it! I should add I am an educator and parent and can attest to the effectiveness of Bible stories from personal experience. As a child the story of Sampson and Delilah stood out to me-he was defeated because she cut his hair?!? Blew my mind! And currently, as I am in a season of transitioning from a sinful past filled with pain, and find myself contemplating the past with sorrow and regret, I have been meditating frequently on the fate of Lot’s wife. A pillar of salt! What magic!😃🧐

By the term "Copy work" he doesn't mean to have your child sit down and copy a whole writing. Rather, he means they play a game where they "copy" two or three words from each sentence to use as a clue or tool when recalling. The first important skill highly neglected is the practice of intentionally recalling. By perfecting this skill alone your child's reading comprehension will increase measurably. Secondary benefits naturally flow from the plain fact that they remember the content of what they read, and the style that in which the writer wrote it.

When your soul knows the pattern, invoking emotion, but your mind has not the words nor concepts to explain the understanding, woe or awe is experienced. With great knowledge, only the highest wets the cheek, in brave ability. The ungrounded light of mind produces the angels and demons of gratitude and resentment. Knock humbly and the wings open with great love. Go slow. Be patient. A blaze must first be gently kindled. With the son of man, it flows. So many words mean the same what. So many concepts mean the same why. So many actions mean the same how. All with one light. Why, in some people, does envy produce the power to destroy? Pride is our divide. A parent who encourages victory sews the tail. Success is for All. Ps Joseph Fourier is a good read
