Steve, I have a question: my double hung windows have ACME twin sash balance for opening and closing. Is there any way to change to lead weight rope pulley system like the windows in this video have?

Ah! That is a Stanley 55 mounted with a sash cutter. I gave it an honest try but have to admit my lack of mastery there. I did try. I need a lot more time with it to begin to unlock its secrets.

Do you recreate the interior profile with a router? If yes, is it difficult to find a bit that matches the old profile?

Any suggestions on how to repair a bowing meeting rail where the lock is? Is full rail replacement the only option?

There’s a person in Sweden that I’ve seen do it. Usually I just replace it. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hdWErdeAldedhXk.htmlsi=RGHokfkP_sQXUgSQ

I have a bowed meeting rail I’m working with now. I’ve been wrapping it in a moist towel and clamping it straight. Seems like it’s working. Over the length of 31 inches it was bowed out 1/4 inch a week ago. Now it’s down to less than 1/8 inch. Not being very aggressive with the clamps for fear of breaking it.

@@WoodWindowMakeover over here in NZ 1920s era sashes tend to be wedged mortis and tenon, that's why I found the bridle joint interesting. Cheers 🍻

How many hours does a repair like that take you? And do you charge for your time or a price? Over in the UK, love your videos and have learnt a lot
@WoodWindowMakeover
@WoodWindowMakeover 11 күн бұрын
Thank you 🙏. No I get a set price to restore a sash. Granted, the price increases with every muntin. But it’s a fixed price. After a while there’s only so many things that can go wrong with a sash and you learn to compare the cost of restoring to building one from scratch. If it’s too far gone and it costs more to restore it than make a new one, they most often get a new, authentic replica, true to form. This one took me a couple of hours. The second one only took 45 minutes. But that is the way it is. First one always takes longer. Second one is faster, third faster and so forth.

Stop talking down to your viewers. In your manner of speaking AND your camera angles. Who is your intended audience? Someone who has no clue whatsoever about any of this, or a somewhat experienced tradesman or homeowner DIYer? Either way, you’re glazing over a lot of important details if you’re trying to teach someone who doesn’t already know how to do this shit. And yeah, pun intended. You’re obviously great at what you do. Those windows look fantastic. But you’d be better with the audience if you didn’t sound like you’re annoyed that they don’t already know everything you do, and so you’re rushing through the explanation.

I been using chemical stripper, but that hasn't been working so well due to needing several applications to get through the 50 or so layers of paint on my windows. Might go this route instead.

Your info is great in all vids and I plan to use all of it to restore every window in my house. One constructive criticism though about something I see in numerous homr improvement videos. There is an excessive use of the word "okay?" In the same way teenagers use the word "like". Its a habitual filler word and distracts from what you are trying to say, which is a real shame considering how knowledgeable you seem and how valuable your content is to folks like me. Thanks for the vid!

Jared, I see what you're saying, but I accept Steve as a teacher rather than a You-Tube influencer or someone trying to put out a flashy product. So, I don't get caught up in any verbal things that might distract some viewers. When I'm watching his videos, 1) I'm in a classroom, 2) it"s a class I'm interested in, and 3) I've judged him to be a trustworthy expert in the area of window restoration. Glad you enjoyed the video like I did. He's provided us with an extensive library of fantastic "how to" videos.
