Great topic. I am 47 and started building my retirement home in Kerala, India. Seeing the place that you grew up makes big difference especially when you are old. By the way I live and work in Canada since last 18 years and planning to retire @55

A sage returns to India 😊... An intriguing guest with mature insights. As a meditator, it's refreshing to hear this perspective on moving back to India, though it's clear that the struggles of survival of long running visas and having kids changes a lot of life goal’s and decisions. Wanderlust might have to take a backseat or face some serious compromises 😊. Wishing you all the best, brother.

Firstly please do not glorify non resident Indians returning to the country as if they are doing a big sacrifice. Everyone has the right to decide according to their circumstances. Secondly life I developed countries is not a bed of roses. There are pluses and minuses if you live in India or abroad. Most of the NRis living abroad are having a mediocre life and their routine is restricted to work and home hardly anything left for their pleasure given the high taxes and high cost of living. Their saving has any value only if it's transferred to India due to the exchange rate difference. Many NRIs do not have sufficient money to even buy flight tickets to visit their parents once in two years. So please don't waste people's time by putting such videos and glory returning NRIs as they return purely for their personal reasons and not for the love of the country.

As you said, each place has pros and cons and since its a personal decision, they need info so that one can make right decision. This is not about love of country or glorifying/sacrificing. Its purely information to be shared to help others

Every parent says that they will go back once kids are independent of them, but no one goes. They are so much attached to kids that they want to see their grandchildren grow up near them or close to them if not in the same house. So they missed the chance to go back for life unless parents go back before their children go to school.

Why should there be consideration for rent change in India? Do you expect same in other countries, once you sign the lease? If you are using the premises and signed the lease, you need to pay rent, no matter what.

The Inflation after Covid went up all over the world including Canada, UK, US and India too for obvious reasons.. Canada wasn't cheap 10 years ago. In Canada, People always spent about 40-50% of monthly salary on rent. If rent has gone up, so did salary though not in exact proportionate terms unless you lost your job. All the points he has mentioned were applicable at all times inclduing hospital waiting times except recent surge in students.

Blaming Canada for his own failures????? You blaming the Indian students for the rise in house rent? That is not untrue. But Guys like you also flooding the country didn't make the situation better on houseing and rentals. You can immigrate but students can't??? What a hypocrisy!!!!! You say India is getting better for the next 100 years but Canada is going down but you took a passport that's losing value in the coming 100 years. Your reason that you wanna traval doesn't stick.

An overthinker! toys, toilet, covid, scolding, school, wife, children.. people move, and they finally adapt, just the same way they adapt when they move out. The understanding he spoke about towards the end, is what eventually comes with time. we're willing to give years to settle abroad, but not even a few months in India.

If kids are born in US, I think you can move back anytime. It’s a no brainer. It’s a different deal if your kid is born in India and if you still donot have a greencard. Then you are leaving everything behind. In many of your videos - we are talking about people who still have roots in the US.

i disagree with the comment that one has to sell the house. Its an asset and one needs to figure it out to rent it out so that i gets paid down. There are several property managers who can help run it for a 5-6% service fee. Also, not everything goes as planned, if you choose to return for whatever reasons you have a place to go vs having to start from scratch all over
@DesiReturn
@DesiReturn Күн бұрын
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Couple of points on why one might want to consider selling house 1. For a non US citizen or GC holder, one need visa to visit US to sell or rely on friends/family/PM (hassle) 2. Missing out $500k capital gain exemption for primary house is another important thing to consider. At the end it depends on each individual short/long term plans and decide whats right for them.

Social security deposits. The deposit need not be in US or US based bank. You can choose to be deposited in NRO account in a local bank - State Bank of India, HDFC or ICICI … it has be A rupee account simply because you lost Non Resident status… or can be deposited in NRE

She shld not have gone to usa to study if she missed her family. 3 years she tried h1b it was not picked - during that time family didn’t matter But when absolute no way for h1b suddenly ondo became a choice. And everything on India is very rosey. She might also be trying for intercountry transfer and file file under eb1 to get GC faster. It’s no brainer.

A couple of points that are a little confusing. I lived 30 years in usa and moved to India to retire. I am not an indian origin person but my wife is. Social security can only be given if you work more than 10 years in the USA. After that the worker is entitled to social security. Your wife is entitled to half of she is a US citizen or citizen of certain countries but not india, so it ends when you die. The pension plan is good but not a guarantee as a child can need support, or health issues can consume pension quickly so you need to be prepared to accept lifes changes including pensions. I do not have any household service and get my own milk. India is great but not because it's cheap. India is great because it's rich with intangible experience. As for taxes, you do pay more in India as there are few deductions in India. Your usa income is taxed in usa first, but because you can file jointly, the deduction is quite big. The tax is less so the same income is also taxed in India, but there is no joint deductions so you pay much more tax and can only deduct the small tax you pay in the USA, so your tax is much higher in India even though the rates are similar.

@@DesiReturn No. Social security is like a pension and is not linked to a savings account. It pays a fixed amount as long as the owner is alive, and 1/2 to the surviving eligible spouse should they select it. Some spouse who have worked over 10 years may have a higher payout so they can select their own social security. Note the spouse benefit is not cumulative, so you get 1/2 the spouse or your own, not both

Currently, I am living in US for last 25 years. Both my parents & my in-laws are living in India. And my daughter is very small (yet to start her kinder garden). My parents & her parents live great distance apart (Kolkata & Mumbai). I still plan to work another 10 to 15 years and then move back. By that time my daughter will be in teens. Any advice on what should be my strategies to start preparing now? This channel is awesome by the way.

Thanks for the feedback!! Glad to know that you have a plan in mind. Moving when your daughter is in teens could be a bit tough for her to adjust (sooner the better- before middke school if possible). If you need 10-15 years, take more trips to India with your daughter so she is familiar with and excited about the move etc., good luck and please share content with others who might benefit from it.

Great podcast avinash. It helps a lot of people. Keep it going. And all the best to Deva as well. I am one of that guy who has been living abroad since 12 years. Planning to make a move back to India in coming years. I am fortunate that we safeguarded my father’s agriculture lands , even though we had some rough time doing shrimp culture few years ago. We are just waiting for the lands to to convert into layouts. As soon as I could see the developments around our fields, we are planing to move back to andhra. Meanwhile me and wife are working so hard to save some money to buy rental properties so that monthly expenses are taken care of. That’s our plan. Hoping to be true in next couple of years. Fingers crossed *
