I'm a novice when it comes to the subject, but I would like to have more sound added to my acoustic guitar. I prefer something exterior and removable not permanent. I'm not on a quiet stage but with other instruments playing at the same time. Some are amped but not overly loud because we are Seniors at the Senior Center and rules forbid to much volume. I think something like a mic would be better then amp. I sit right by one of the P.A. speakers typically that are used for vocals. I also play Banjo and would like to use it for that also. Any suggestions?

I would suggest the Myers Pickup. It'a an external mic that you can easily take on and off as needed. It sounds realistic but of course you'll have to be careful with feedback as it is a mic. I use mine with banjo and acoustic guitar. Here's my full video - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ipdgqah8q8ilc3U.html You'll want to explore the different attachment styles that it is available with so that you can use it with both acoustic and banjo.

Nice test, man!!! I came here searching for an idea of mine in practice... and you were almost there! 😊 But before that, I was actually impressed with the option 2. Yup, there's the inconvenience you mentioned but... how about my idea: - A mic'ed unplugged electric guitar + AC-3 + amp. Could it reach the quality of the electric DI option 2? Could it sound even better? 🤔

With that extra hole in the pickguard you could put a tone for each pickup OR switch OR blend control😅

Option 1 consistently sounded better to my ear. It was brighter, but without sacrificing the low end. It may be that in person listening acoustically the body pickups may sound more like the instrument, but I'm not there. To me, option 1 sounded better, which is counter to his argument in the video. Option 2 seemed to need an eq adjustment. But everyone hears differently and what it sounds like in person vs on someone's phone or TV is all quite different.

Additional note: I'm not saying I don't like the idea of the option of installing the piezo events wherever you like. I'm in the process of installing one of these with four elements and I'm searching around for the optimal locations for each on the top by ear and then installing them inside. So, overall, I agree with his point. It just happens that I preferred the sound of option 1 in his recording.

My SSL 2 was a piece of plastic junk that failed within 6 months. I recommend people stay away from those interfaces. I listened to the YT hype on that thing and felt like I was ripped off. I spent a little bit more and bought the Clarettt + Pre and life is so much better. Maybe I got a lemon with the SSL 2 , but the buttons were loose and fuzzy, and it made a god awful buzzing noise even with nothing plugged into it. 2nd channel didn't work at all either. I think they're cheap garbage, but that's just my opinion.

The roundwounds sound better; more fuller and more lows and highs. But the flats have a nicer mids but lacking in the lows. If I'm honest, I prefer the sound of the roundwound strings.

I use 13s but tune down a full step to D Standard. For standard e tuning I like 11s or 12s. My Furch came with 12s on as standard but it’s 13s for the extra tension to compensate for the full step drop. Happy playing to all. Enjoy!

Why, why, WHY is this company not promoting themselves more? There’s only two links on KZfaq about this product. And this headphone amp is the only one that offers the auxiliary feature. And despite 12v capability, it’s still center pin negative and less than a 500ma draw (which means that it can adapt with most power supplies without extra cables). I bet that this company is busting through the seams and can’t keep these things in stock. Everybody should own one of these. I just ordered one but have not received yet.

Didn't understand why you only trimmed a little bit of the dead space on the IR....how long should they be?
@AlexPriceMusician
@AlexPriceMusician 14 күн бұрын
Most IR loaders handle 1024 samples, some 2048 or more. I generally trim to 1024 for match EQs. A traditional IR will have a longer tail.

Round core vs hex core makes a bigger difference than string brand, sort of like ceramic vs alnico in a pickup or speaker. I prefer D'Addario XL hexcore because they just work for me. The perfect attack, warmth, sustain, durability, and feel. I've always found GHS a bit rough under the fingers and they don't really last as long as D'Addario. Maybe they last a little longer than Ernie Ball as far as durability. But they do lose their luster a lot quicker than D'Addario. Now, when it comes to strats I've always preferred Super Slinkys because I feel the combination of brightness and slackness works very well with a strat, particularly on the 2 and 4 positions. My second favorite strings on a strat are the XLs 9-42.

Great video - just this weekend I have been messing with two of them - one in front and one in the FX loop. So far, the best use in the loop is as a volume pedal that keeps the same preamp sound/distortion while being made softer or louder. But I am sure there is more I will run into.

Thank you. As a beginner I don't know what strings are on my guitars. I have a £100 cheap but good enough acoustic and a £500 Martin acoustic with electrics which I don't use. I am going to find out what strings I have and switch to 10s because at the moment my priority is learning to play better.
@AlexPriceMusician
@AlexPriceMusician 15 күн бұрын
@@gothicwriter9897 I support that, I usually have my beginning students start on 10s or 11s on acoustic. You may need a truss rod adjustment as most acoustic guitars come from the factory with 12s. Try the new strings and if you’re getting a bit of buzz or if the strings seem too close to the fretboard, you could loosen the truss rod by a quarter turn and see if that helps.

Great video. I’ve done similar evaluation and agree with most of your conclusions. I use the K&K in all my guitars and I do so because of the obvious issue of putting a piece of metal under a saddle. Have you ever tried out an iRig Acoustic Stage? I believe this is just a tiny condenser mic that you hang on your sound hole. Biggest drawback that I have found with iRig is I’d like to extend the cable from the mic to the unit so I would not have to hang the unit on my strap because I change guitars on stage. But I have not found a way to do that. All of the mini connectors that I have used with extensions are crappy and connect and disconnect giving huge “cracking” noises like plugging in and unplugging. Would love to see an iRig eval. Also if you could come up with an extension for the mic. I also remove the pick guard from all my acoustics and replace with a thin press on vinyl film. Huge difference.

What microphone do you recommend for violin
@AlexPriceMusician

I use the Cloudvocal on my violin. You can add a bit of EQ and reverb with the receiver (and it's wireless, which is really nice to not have a cable hanging from your instrument). Here's my full video of the Cloudvocal on a violin: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mahdZ5qLuaisqWQ.html

Great video. I am using a Gibson F5 impulse response from 3 Sigma Audio, through the IK Tonex pedal with the amp turned off. With no amp the signal level is low so I use a boost pedal after the Tonex. My mandolin has an under saddle picked and I’m happy with the sound. I am primarily a guitar player and this setup lets me play mandolin through my regular pedalboard.

I had wondered how my passive instrument pickups would work with the Tonex. They should add a flat preamp with parametric EQ for acoustic instruments.

@@AlexPriceMusician For sure. Quite a while ago now, I played that part. The soloist had played the piece 18 times in his career, including the last concerto performance of the 20th century at the “Millennium Proms,” and never once had he heard it with banjo. He loved the color it brought to the piece! I was delighted indeed to hear that from him.

Listening to the K&K, you'd never know you're listening to a dreadnought guitar. That pickup drastically changes the tone of the dreadnought Martin. It just doesn't make the guitar sound natural. I just bought the Journey pickup to go into my Oliver Mahogany Orangewood guitar. I play at church on stage with a band almost every week and have been using the cheap magnetic soundhole pickups. I'm excited to be able to plug in my guitar. I previously have installed a jjb 330a pickup in my other acoustic and was less than impressed with it, which is why I've been reluctant to try another transducer pickup in this guitar.
