This culture makes games like subnautica so refreshing. In a world where most games value systemic military supremacy like EU4/rimworld or mechanical skills that emulate real life combat like aiming a gun, it’s nice to play a game focused still on danger but not on fighting. You’re prey with little hope of slashing your way through most threats, so you have to adapt in ways that really tickle your brain

This is a really great video. There's a really interesting point that comes to mind when you talk about some of the new additions and mechanic changes to Melee: though so many fans treat Melee as a "No pansies here, it's only for the roughest and toughest" extreme, there are actually a decent number of changes made from 64 (less commital air movement and movement in general, less shield stun, DI, air dodging, etc) that were made to make Melee a more accessible game for newer players. It's also a really great point you make about how Kirby, even when getting a hit, doesn't get too much from it, and then has to go back to neutral which is by default bad for the character due to their general traits. Though this is very rudimentary, it seems to me like there is a general pattern one can apply to tier lists in general: Top Tier: Low Risk, High Reward (If this "Low Risk" is really absolute instead of being "Low Risk" relative to other characters, it may feel unbalanced or overpowered) Good-Upper Mid Tier: High Risk, High Reward Mid-Low Tier: Low Risk, Low Reward (These characters are will often be regarded as very good in early tier lists but will wain over time) Bottom Tier: Low Risk, Low Reward

Sucks that Kirby is consistently bottom tier across the series, as a kirby series fan it's sad to see.

No Smash 4 or Switch versions mentioned? Man I know melee is a beloved game by many, but it would be nice to have a talk about ALL versions of him in smash, not just melee.

Things I like about Bomb Rush Cyberfunk: 1. The art direction, aesthetic, and graphics are amazing to view. 2. The traversal is fun and engaging, although sometimes held back by level design and the combo system. 3. The story is actually pretty enjoyable, the humor is good, I like the characters. 4. The music. 5. The music. 6. The music. 7. The music. 8. The music. 9. The music. 10. The music.

IMO all fighting games should have character tiers like competitive Pokemon so we can see what tournaments look like if Fox, Falco, Sheik and Marth aren't present.

4:58 correction: Z-Cancelling in Smash 64 makes your character enter the normal landing state instead of the corresponding aerial attack's landing state, which is 4 frames if you're not fastfalling and 8 frames if you are. The ONLY time you get 0 frames of landing lag in Smash 64 is when you combine Z-Cancelling with No-Impact Landing (NIL) which is significantly more rare (albeit Kirby can do this easily by getting the right jump height from holding a direction and doing a C-Button jump onto Dream Land's side platforms.)

5:10 "movement in 64 has to be deliberate. once you start moving forward there's no moving in and out in the way", um, are you watching the clip you have on screen of pikachu? every character in this game has the aerial acceleration of puff in melee. the ability to change drift is insane, brawl-esque, that's part of why everyone stays in the air like a fly. just sad to make a video essay this pristine with such obvious deficiencies in basic understanding of the games' mechanics. yes ground movement is better in melee, and kirby has both poorer drift and ground movement compared to therest of the cast in melee, but you kind of missed half of the entire point.

This kind of happened to Marth as well. As he got slower with no Double FAir in a single short hop while other characters got faster, he ended up needing to be a little bit more precise with his tippers to land anything nasty in Ultimate.

Unrelated, but one aspect of the video I really loved was how you used both he/him and they/them pronouns for Kirby - since Kirby is genderless in Japan

He does have some funny quirks about him that aren't relevant to the scope of Leon's video but are worth mentioning in a comment I feel. 1. You can just jump out of his forward or back throws mid animation. You don't even need to mash, just tap Y or X. Backthrow is a bit harder since it's so fast but forward throw can easily be done on reaction. If you do this when he goes for a throw that would go off-stage he continues the animation and just dies alone. 2. That said, he CAN do an offstage up throw if he has his back RIGHT to the ledge (usually by rolling against it). Opponent cannot jump out of the animation, but Kirby does die first meaning the opponent has a few frames where they CAN input double jump and depending on the stage / character's recovery, make it back unscathed. Also very funny. 3. In the opposite vein, if the opponent is inhaled, their hurtbox extends BELOW Kirby. Meaning that if done offstage and they don't mash (which is the correct play usually since the throw break animation off stage usually kills you outright), Kirby can input jump within a few frames to survive after the opponent dies. He's definitely a character of all time, that's for sure. Used to main him, and would occasionally bust him out as a party trick.

We can see this same "fish out of water" dynamic with other characters going into subsequent smash games, probably most noticeable with Marth in Ultimate. Marth relies on precise spacing for his tippers, but the buffed movement speed of the whole cast in Ult basically turns his attacks into RNG for whether you'll get the "good" hitbox or not.
