Great slow camera work of a place I remember well. My family ran the beer tent when the park had the Co-op fete every year and my uncle was landlord of the Cricketers pub in the town. I spent MANY happy hours in the park.

That's me on the AJP PR7 motorcycle at 6 minutes 44 seconds. Amazing I would stumble upon this video thousands of miles from the UK to show a friend here in Asia where i used to live. Spooky

The old boarded up building that is features around 16.50 to 17.50 is still in just the same sorry state . The developers wanted to bulldoze the whole site for new housing and originally they were told to convert the buildings into apartments, retaining the original exterior architecture Then, further surveying showed that it is in too bad shape after decades of neglect, so consent was given but the red-brick facade of the original small theatre the Victoria Hall ,1887, must be retained . Nearly three years later it is just the same ,a positive eyesore that the people living nearby suffer .

My maternal grandmother's lineage goes back to Chappel Essex England. My six time great grandparents Thomas & Anne Abbott lived there and were buried there. Their son George was a tailor there but he left for America in 1553 and settled in Massachusetts where he helped establish the town of Watertown. He died from the elements and is buried there. It's my dream to visit the homeland of Chappel Essex.

I think having Frinny and Clackers and Walton on the Naze farely close to each other causes a strange atrophy in the area.

Thank you for uploading this - I studied in Colchester 1998-2001 and this brought back memories. I think where Primark is now there used to be C&A and Virgin in that area. I used to love going to Spoils shop (they sold mugs, plates, toys etc etc), and Vagabonds cafe. All those places aren't there anymore but I can vaguely remember where they are, while I watched your video. Good memories :)

Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for your comments! I didn’t know Colchester had a Spoils shop (our closest Spoils was in Romford) and it reminded me buying all the stuff for our first house... still have some jars I think... Regarding C&A comments - it was a BHS before Primark, miss the BHS lighting department! Thanks again!
