The British orchestrated the division of India with the aide of Muslim leaders because there was a dream among the Muslims to recreate Mughal era. And the division is made in such a way that the core population of India (the people of the northern plains) remain poor and deprived due to lack of connectivity with the sea on one side and central Asian countries on the other. You may say “but there is Bengal”. Well look at the history of Bengal after independence. It has been ruled by communists for the largest part. They deindustrialised Bengal. And even while there were industries, they hampered their development with the use of labour unions and anti-industry leftist policies. The development of northern Indian plains is possible only if there is good connectivity of the region with the rest of the world. This is exactly why the Modi government decided on focusing on “Act East” policy as soon as they formed their government in 2014. All the growth you see after 2014 has been strategically focused on improving the transportation system in the northern Indian plains.
