This game has a similar beauty to it as Far Cry 5. Weird culty undertone but beautiful somehow.

An amazing remake to an amazing game. Also, fun facts: Corporate Fascism, also known as Corporatism, is a fearsome version of Socialism that utilizes a government-owned private sector or private sector that becomes the government. Two notable historic examples would be Nazi Germany and current Communist China. Yes, Nazism/Fascsim is Socialism.

I really, really wished I could have loved this game. The gorgeous visuals that still look insanely good in 2024, the open world Gotham, the grittier tone and M rating, and excellent upgrades to almost every aspect of traversal and stealth. Then I remember the horrible story, the plodding pace, and that damned Batmobile. Also, I'm personally not cool with Batman torturing people. He should be so inherently scary that just stringing someone up by their legs and saying "talk" should be enough. Threatening to crush a guy's head under your tire (which is stupid anyway because Batman doesn't kill and all the thugs know that, so he'd never make good on that threat) was just excessively edgy. It felt a lot more like something The Punisher would do, not Batman.

Super late to provide this hint (I avoided all Hellblade essays until I played it myself which only took years of me saying "I'll do the VR version but that'll take some setting up" before giving up and finally just playing mouse and keyboard recently). For the Garm boss fight, when he hides in shadows, he'll always give off a growl shortly before he charges and since you need to be using headphones for this game, you should fairly easily be able to pinpoint the direction in time to be able to face him and dodge his charge. Love your videos, Monty, and glad to see how much your channel has grown since the early days!

I think I’m easily entertained, honestly.. and that’s probably not a good thing. I am so in love, invested and infatuated with rapture, specifically rapture in bioshock 1 and the story of it that the burial at sea DLC just tickled my fancy. I loved seeing pre civil war rapture, how everything came to be for the setting and story of jack and how we, the player, had a hand in influencing and were the catalyst for my favorite video game ever made. There’s a whole lot of plot holes and confusion that comes with the DLC but I’ve always been able to shut my brain off and just enjoy the ride. I guess I’m just an easy victim to nostalgia.

What... This is still one of my favorite games of all time. Every time *any* product is made, there are going to compromises made to deliver a good, stable product. Agree that there are sooo many things I would have liked. For example, most hardcore fans always mention more exploration. It is just engaging, beautiful, and terribly interesting. Still love it and play it at least once a year.

I’m just a big fan of space and physics so if I get something wrong please correct me. I learned this from a Veritasium video that I’ll link at the bottom, I highly recommend watching the whole video. All of this hinges on our equations for all of this stuff being correct and not just really close to being right We’re going to imagine space and time as a grid, space is the x-axis and time is the y-axis cutting off at the end of the universe (In the video he rotates the graph 45 degrees to the right so that moving through time moves you up the graph which makes it much easier to visualize and understand). (Assuming you could travel the speed of light) If you existed at the instant of the Big Bang you would be able to be at any point in space and time because you could travel anywhere along the graph (this is called a light cone). As you move through time, you become unable to make it to certain points along the graph because we can’t go faster than light. Black holes exist on this graph and kind of act as reverse light cones. The further through time you go the more points on the graph become closed off to you. There’s a whole bunch of extremely complicated math that I don’t understand in the slightest, but it’s important to note that the maturity of black holes rotate like planets and when black holes rotate they have 3 event horizons. The outer event horizon is just kind of there, and I’m pretty sure you can escape from it but I could definitely be wrong. The middle event horizon is similar to the event horizon we imagine on the “traditional” black hole (aka non rotating ones). The inner event horizon is actually just a ring, like if you poured water onto a spinning disk is moves out toward the edges. I have no idea what this event horizon does but it’s pretty cool. But basically the super complicated math that we used to find out black holes exist, when graphed, makes the light cone chart (which I’m pretty sure is where we got the chart from). When they do stuff to the math it still works for times and locations on the chart on the other side of the black hole. Because you don’t just get “ERROR” it means that these other universes are mathematically able to exist (like how you can plug negative numbers into F=Ma and still get answers). (The same math also works for black holes in reverse which is why white holes are theoretically possible but we don’t think they actually exist) But to be able to get to these universes we would have to be able to travel faster than light or through wormholes. On the graph these universes would be exactly like our own with the time axis traveling parallel to our own, but with the space axis being mirrored. The math also puts graphs above the black hole after the end of time and below the black hole before time begins making two new universes that will eventually have black holes. The math keeps going on and on forever creating an infinite number of alternate universes. Once again I highly recommend watching the Veritasium video on this because he understands it and explains it a million times better than I have and in a way that is very entertaining to watch. I don’t have the link copied and I’m typing this on mobile so I’ll just reply to my comment with the link

I never got Dragan. He wasn't that interesting, and you defeat him half-way through - he is a shoulder shrug. I think flashbacks are some of the worst story-telling devices in games. Especial the ghostly figure types. They are boring, passive; and you are just standing still, waiting for the audio the finish. You see them in many game, Call of Cthulhu, the Batman games when detecting. The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is even build around this boring story telling device. So what did we get out of Dragan, that Ravis did't give us; 'cause he is far more interesting? Even the bounty hunter, that are almost optional, are more interesting. And they fit better with the theme of being an intergalactic terrorist - "from a certain point of view".

Some Soulslike games you may not of heard of: Hellpoint: Sci-Fi horror game that got some not great reviews but looks really cool. Asterigos: Curse of the Stars: Could be called a "Soulslight" game but it's really fun with a neat weapon system. Also has a female player character which is cool. Steelrising: You play a clockwork robot in revolution era France. One of the more unique ideas.

Man, this was brilliant. Been playing games for 30 years and this is the only one that's stuck with me so many years after I've played it. All the aspects you've mentioned (the lived in, plausible environments, the personality that they gave every scientist so you end up feeling like you know them, the way you end up considering your choices harder than in any actual RPG, the utter tragedy of the plot...). The perfect voice acting deserves a mention, it's up there with the best of them. The companion videos too, they give a great perspective at what happened immediately before the game starts. Also the additional material on the website is cool, there's a story about Munchi and one of the gunner that decides to go up the barrel of the space gun to see the sky. I've watched most of YT's content on this game and this is probably the best.

Surprised that you harvested the little sisters so much. Just like the first game, the little sisters will reward you with Adam and unique perks and tonics. I remember 1 tonic giving you more adam from the little sisters when they harvest a corpse for example. You still end up with most of the plasmid upgrades instead of having any adam leftover

You mentioned System Shock 2. Ken Levine also worked on that, hence the audio logs. Bioshock was a spiritual successor to System Shock 2. I bought System Shock 2 on release, sadly it wasn't a big seller. I guess it was too ahead of its time.
