I am so sorry to hear that happened to you. Thank you for offering your experience to help others learn! The hospital treatment for a pneumothorax and/or hemothorax would be a chest tube. That device would help remove the air/blood from the chest cavity and allow the lung room to inflate again. I hope you are well now!!

You are correct! However, if the abdominal thrusts and chest compressions don’t dislodge the object, then may be pushing it down into one lung may be the only/best option. Either way, you have on open airway.

Ryan, to be honest there are multiple medical conditions that could be a consideration when it comes to administering any medication. This video was not about the plethora of outlying conditions… it was specifically to educate providers on the key points of Chest Pain. Aspirin is a key player in reducing mortality and death from ACS, so I think one should evaluate the benefits vs. the risks with an ulcer that may or may not be an issue. Thank you for your insight.

Austin, it is my understanding that each individual state is now overseeing the NREMT psychomotor exam for EMTs. It is up to them how the skills are conducted and what skills will be tested. There are no notes or resources allowed in the computer-adaptive (written) exams.

Since the cause for hypertension in a tachycardic patient (rate over 150) is usually that the ventricles don’t have time to completely fill up. Therefore, the best solution would be to slow the heart down with either medication (adenosine) or synchronized cardioversion. If that isn’t possible, then you could consider fluids or a vasopressor to help constrict the vessels. Be certain to check lung sounds before administering fluids!

Avery, the patient responded to painful stimuli, so it more than likely that he would have a gag reflex. You would have seen facial trauma upon inspection of the face…. None was noted (although it wasn’t verbalized in the video) Thanks for the question!! We appreciate you!

The reason I asked is because in all of the trauma assessment videos i’ve watched with pts who were only responsive to painful stimuli an OPA was used preferred instead of NPA and the proctors would verbalize that pt always accepted it so I’m confused as to what the right choice is

@@avery8677 it has been my experience that patients who respond to pain almost always have a gag reflex… but every situation can be different. You must treat every patient based on their assessment findings. If the patient will accept an OPA, that would be the preferred airway adjuncts, but if not, then the NPA is the next best thing. Patient treatment is always based on the patient, which will vary. The reason we are making these videos is because we struggle to find examples for our students that don’t cause confusion or teach assessment incorrectly. These probably aren’t perfect, but we are giving it a good shot!
