I was an apprentice singer at a opera workshop in Ma. The director was the famous voice of the Met, Boris Goldovsky. I had the courage to ask him of the thousands of singers he has heard in his career, what did he think of Mario Lanza. He told me, " Maria Lanza had the greatest voice he had ever heard. He also said some not so flattering opinions. regardless, This is from a man who heard the greatest singers of the 20th century.
@TonyPartington11 күн бұрын
@@donaldgaudette4252 Thank you for your thoughts and remarks. I am not surprised to hear what Goldovsky had to say. He worked with Mario at Tanglewood. Clearly he separated the fact that Lanza was: "The greatest singer he'd ever heard." And was also lazy, conceted about his voice (which is what we expect the reaction of a neophyte who's essentially out of his element). A young Leonard Bernstein was tasked with teaching Mario the role of Fenton in Nicolai's THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR. In all my study with Maestro Constantine Callinicos he never wavered in his opinion that Mario's was the greatest voice he had ever heard.

Thank you so much for viewing the video. I'm glad you enjoyed. I'm afraid I don't know which costume Barbara Cook wore for the scene in which she sang this song. What a stellar talent she was. Her life is an incredible example of the strength and beauty of the human spirit. Ciao!

Nessuna mezza voce, tutto tirato dritto senza sfumature né malinconie.

No-one like Barbara - a great voice but also a great communicator. She understood that a song was a felt emotion so it always sounded like her own life story not just pretty notes. Rebecca Luke’s also had that quality. I saw Barbara in concert in later years extraordinary then - how I wish I’d seen her in a show like THE MUSIC MAN or CANDIDE!

Thanks for your thoughtful comments Graham. I never saw Barbara Cook in performance. One of my great artistic regrets to be sure. I agree with you wholeheartedly. She was a communicator. She told (and sold)the story; not just the tune. Her performance of "Too Many Mornings" with George Hearn is one of the greatest Musical Theatre duet performances of all time. Ciao!

He wanted each word, each vowel/consonant heard...and understood. Many times singers race through because they've forgotten the words.

His throat-clearing is very familiar to most every singer. Hard to be singing as long and hard as he'd done for years and not have nodes forming.

Mario was given his voice from God. It is given once in a lifetime and there will never be another. He had a magic when he sang the color was magnificent and the range was gorgeous. He left us beautiful recordings and movies. He played his idol Caruso. God took him too soon but will always be able to hear him in our hearts. I know he is singing up in heaven. When I get there I will be able to tell him how much I have missed him. God bless him!!!

My white knight, not a Lancelot, nor an angel with wings Just someone to love me, who is not ashamed of a few nice things. My white knight who knew what my heart would say if it only knew how. Please, dear Venus, show me now. All I want is a plain man All I want is a modest man A quiet man, a gentle man A straightforward and honest man To sit with me in a cottage somewhere in the state of Iowa. And I would like him to be more interested in me than he is in himself. And more interested in us than in me. And if occasionally he'd ponder what make Shakespeare and Beethoven great, Him I could love till I die. Him I could love till I die. My white knight, not a Lancelot, nor an angel with wings. Just someone to love me, who is not ashamed of a few nice things. My white knight, let me walk with him where others ride by Walk and love him till I die, till I die.

Barbara Cook on Broadway and Patricia Lambert in London could both master the final top note but it seems they modified the screen version for Shirley Jones into ‘Being in Love’ so that she wasn’t as challenged.

You are quite right. And the musical changes made in the movie were, to my mind, thoughtless, pointless and ultimately damaging to the story. But this is nothing new. Look at what Hollywood did with PAINT YOUR WAGON. Who would you rather hear sing "I Talk To The Trees"? Clint Eastwood or Tony Bavar?
