I've always seen myself in rust and I think what defines us is our inability to accept the world the way it is (i.e. not reconciling with the problem of evil). People like us cope with our tragic past /reality by maximizing the good we can do in the world so it buys us a little more time. Meanwhile we try to distract ourselves from our surrealist existence, if we couldn't, then so would our existence.

I've always held the belief that self awareness is an evolutionary misstep that will someday correct itself. I know it's not original idea but hearing it in this show was, I don't know if nice is the right word. But look around. Humans have only been here for a very small fraction of existence and look at the utter mess we have caused in the name of, what, god, power, love? I mean the only redeeming part of our time here is that we will inevitably destroy ourselves and the world will revert back to animals acting upon survival instinct and not some fabricated meaning created by a scared self aware primate who doesn't understand it's own existence. Rust is right, we should all just walk hand in hand into oblivion and allow nature to return to it's previous unadulterated state.

Adam Curtis is controlled opposition of the most insidious kind. He's there to make the normies think they're watching something profound whilst telling them absolutely nothing. He's the educational equivalent of having a jug of warm water as a good hot meal: It fill temporarily fill you up, but provide ZERO nutrition whatsoever. I worked Curtis out ages ago.

i realize listening to the rhetoric here, how much *palestinian liberation* is feeding this longing for an old fashioned liberationist Cause that fits long established symbolic and discursive molds. We studiously overlook that the savage eruptions of Israel and Palestine are merely a phenomenon of *overpopulation*. Too bad the ecological perspective on our collective plight finds no connection to the Passions of the media mind. Is ecocide too real ? Or too hard to cast in liberationist terms ? But then neither can Sudanese civil war stir us - too hard to construct a narrative of goodguy versus badguy there ? (not enough english speakers in Sudan for Piers Morgan to invite to test their rhetorical skills against each other ?)

In my understanding, Cohle sees the tragedy of the human condition, but chose to bring some light to this fucked up world and become heroic in his meaningless existence. That's the reason he has a cross in his apartment; Doing this work is your sacrifice, and in some ways, your own crucifixion. "Once there was only dark, if you ask me the light's winning."

I already knew liberal democracy is broken, but I never felt it as viscerally as I did when I started watching Adam Curtis' films. it's an uneasy feeling, but really gets the noggin jogging.

I'm always pleasantly surprised when a film is unintentionally psychoanalytic. Bergman, Kubrick, and Lynch come to mind but I'm glad Aster is playing with these themes to give the freudo-lacanians more work to dissect. lovely video :)

I’ll tell you what. There is nothing heroic about this kind of life. I wake up every day hoping just something happens. Something just rips me off. Because trust me when you don’t have an inclination for suicide. There really is no way out. There is I’ll keep going until something does me or there’s just living in utter misery. Please to anyone reading this. Don’t go down this rabbit hole. There is no way out

What’s interesting though, is that if you listen to the preaching in the background on your second viewing, a lot of what he’s saying is true or plausible knowing how the series plays out. Rust is a realist, he does not like his worldview and is looking for the faith those people have blindly.

Both films set out to accomplish different things, and are both successful in their respective lanes. It’s hard to compare such different pieces, despite a lot of the backbone being the same, they are fundamentally night and day. There is no right or wrong here, just different. If I had to pick of course Herzog triumphs with strides, but this is hydrogen bomb versus coughing baby we’re talking here.

In my opinion, nihilistic pessimism is just as childish and as immature of a world outlook as believing everything is perfect and everything is good. It’s a cop out for people who don’t want to do the difficult work of dealing with their trauma and healing from it. It’s easy to believe the world is all bad, or all good, but it isn’t that black and white. Nuance is the point, a gray area is the point. Finding light in the world after going through horrific situations is not easy, but that doesn’t mean the light isn’t there. It’s just easier to say it isn’t there if you never look for it.

Some trauma is too hard to overcome. Some people are too weak to heal themselves. But I think the paradox of doing good without finding meaning in it is admirable. Maybe it's just following social programming or maybe it's a surpressed conscious that believes that good actions are valuable in some way. Motivations don't matter to me as much as the actions themselves.

I vibe very strongly with him, i have an inclination to realism that given the state of the world tends to move towords pessimism, but despite of all the bad stuff, keep moving and try to make at least a tiny bit beter and focusing on the little positive things to be found is an active choice that has to be inspired. I got my inspiration when my attempt to x myself failed. Our pessimism both is to a good part born out of empathy, but the only empathetic thing to do is to cling to it no matter what, even in a very dark wold, no pain and no act of kinfness is ever meaningless. Just because most things are doomed to enf and often badly does not excuse not trying and wctivly causing others to suffer

And that's why when someone like Andrew Tate comes up and says something that everyone else is afraid to say, instead of letting him stay the prophet, someone more balanced and nuanced should seize the opportunity of the topic not being taboo anymore and assume this role instead.

Idk, I kinda enjoy empathy. Mostly from other people towards other people since your own could be selfish or narcissistic. But it's a beautiful thing, even if it's just a useful (or sometimes even maladaptive) adaptation. This flash of illusory meaning in the void of pointlessness is worth living for.
